Is the west on top again?
« on: April 17, 2013, 04:09:24 PM »
Quietly the west is running shit right about now.  Now that Lil' Wayne has finally become irrelevant, the only thing popping out of the south is TI, KRIT, and maybe Trinidad.  New York is all fucked up right now, no one has come to claim Jay Z's spot.  ASAP and Joey Badass are making noise, but right now I think the west coast has a very strong group of young artists that are ready to run shit for awhile.

Kendrick and Black Hippy are imo the best thing going right now.  Kendrick is becoming the must have feature and the rest of the TDE camp is ready to make some noise now that Kendrick has opened some eyes to the new level of lyricism from the west.  OFWGKTA has some great talent, Earl might be one of the most lyrical rappers out right now, Iamsu and HBK are heating up, and Problem has been on all kinds of records.  Game puts out a lot of music, and even though most of the old school dudes we love have fallen off, every once in a while they put out some good shit we can enjoy.

Overall I think we need to realize this is the start of another golden age of west coast rap.  Atleast I hope so. 8)

See, it's funny. I agree with you but the forum won't because Kendrick is more of a Nas rapper with simple beats and absurdly incredible lyrics and people still living on the 90s on here have a hard time even saying he's a great rapper because they'd rather here shitty lyrics and more west coast sounding production.

LOL I guarantee if KDot got shot a few times and was claiming a set people would be calling him Pacs Son.

As far as mainstream hip hop goes the West is actually relevant and has been for the past year with Tyga and Macklemore.

lol at trying to claim Seattle as the west now that someone from there has blown up. They've had a good scene going for a couple years now and absolutely no one was fucking with them.

Yup. Mackelmore has some cool songs but there's much better rappers out there (guess that's just how it goes though).

I mean, let's be real, you can't be "on top" without having mainstream appeal. Macklemore HAS to count for the West. He's got the two biggest songs out right now.

Like Ghost said, nobody has taken Jay's spot in New York to represent it on a national scale in order to say "New York" is on top.

West making moves.

the West isn't on top, the game isn't a coastal thing anymore. it's a question of different scenes. you have the mainstream scene, from which come : the Game, Tyga, Will.I.Am, etc. you have the mixtape scene where you have among others, westcoast artists : Dom Kennedy, the T.D.E./Black Hippy Movement, Casey Veggies, Big K.R.I.T., Smoke DZA, Curren$y, Freddie Gibbs... some have become mainstream (Kendrick obviously, but not only), but these rappers have the same profile, they all made their name (Curren$y excluded) grinding, putting out mixtapes in which they would feature one another (the names I've mentioned appear very often as features on the mixtapes from like 08 to 11). as DOM Kenndy said on Twitter, "Two and half years ago I wanna say Freddie Gibbs, Kendrick and Me had a FREE show above the Roxy and it wasn't even packed." so these artists, who are from the west for some of them, gained a following (including a lot of us) and became relevant and some even mainstream.
