i already know that this isn't his best work nor is it a round off of what's left that's good.  this is just "random" picks from each album foreal - i'm just makin a quick little thread.

and naw i haven't caught Jay Z nostalgia but his catalog came across my mind not too long ago, shit's pretty deep.

he came a long way.

He's too commerial for most of this forum, but his catalog is bar none the best in hip hop, and he also might have more hits than anyone in hip hop. He drops am album at 44 years old that shits on almost the entire industry. If you include the collabs with Kanye and R Kelly, you're talking 15 albums in 17 years, with 3 years stepped away from the game. Can't fuck with that.

^^^youre crazy, dude has 2 good albums. Has def had some good singles, but the majority of his albums are disposable/not memorable.

Jiggaman kept telling everyone he was the greatest and people got brainwashed and repeated it. I could name 50 rappers with better discogs than jay.

he's definitely had a great career but is still overrated a little... IMO his best works were done in the 90's

Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint & The Black album are all classic albums.

Vol. 2, American Gangsta, Kingdom Come & Magna Carta are real dope albums too.

His discography has it's lows, but his highs are right there with anyone. I know you can't judge it like this, but in reality, guys like Pac, Big, Big L, Big Pun, etc. weren't around long enough to produce the averageness that a 20+ year career is sure to bring.

The thing that always bothered me about Jay is he didn't get his status until Big L, 2Pac, Biggie, and Pun all died (and Nas and the West Coast fell off). Dude didn't really hold his weight amongst the gods.

If Lebron, Durant, Kobe, CP3, Howard, Paul George, Steph Curry, and Westbrook all suffered season-ending injuries do we give Wade credit for having the best season in the league?

Interesting comparison.

Who would Nas be in this situation? He's widely considered a king of NY.

Around the time Jay came out Nas was on a rapid decline. Once Nastradamus dropped he was written off.

His discography is still much stronger than Jay's though.

You're off in this analogy for a few reasons.

1: Pac and Big are the only ones who you can say the status thing about. Big L died in 99 and Pun in 2000. Jay was already a household name in 98, just check the album sales for Vol 2 Hard Knock Life if you don't believe that. Also, I really don't think even if they were alive that Big L and Pun would have made an impact anywhere near Jay-Z. There's plenty of rappers with one hot (not gonna say classic because Capital Punishment is not a classic) album, but how many have 3 or more classics?

2: your NBA analogy refers to one season. Jay did this for years and years and years, spanning 3 different decades. Plenty of other rappers came and went during that time.

3: you can't throw "what if's" out there, because there's 100 other rappers that could have had Jay's spot and none of them do.

4: you act as if Jay wasn't making an imprint before Pac and Big died. He was big enough to where Biggie wanted to fuck with him constantly, and in many cases it seems like he looked up to Jay. He was big enough for Pac to wanna call him out more than any rapper other than Buggie despite never meeting the guy. Reasonable Doubt went gold with essentially independent backing, and "Ain't no Nigga" went platinum. And this is in 1996 BEFORE any of the deaths. Check Pac's first album sales, Big's first album sales, and they're right there with Jay's first album sales when they all dropped. They all went up after the first album.

Maybe he wouldn't be considered a king to some like he is now, but I don't see how anyone can think he wouldn't have a top in the game status even without the deaths of Pac and Big. He was on an upward trend from day one and jumped out of the gate very relevant and even was responsible for pushing Foxy Brown over the top. If its so easy to do, how come nobody else has been able to stay relevant with hits and trendsetting albums into their 40's?

Jay Z is a puppet, does exactly what he's told and is rewarded with huge wealth and mainstream success, like any other. He is now a "brand". His albums are nothing special, and dropped one classic in 1996 yet still get's huge props in this controlled industry because he is a 'brand', and is used as a front man to sell all of their (his) business ventures. Gain Global Investments? They invest in their own creation, to help push and sell whatever he associates with. The game is rigged and controlled, but as far as talent goes, he was once a very good rapper, turned average rapper with very average albums.. Saying he's great, and that his albums are hot is falling for the marketing of the brand known as Jay Z

The Blueprint was a classic musically and for the impact it had on hip-hop, I personally think The Black Album was a classic too but I can see that one being more arguable

back when I first heard Reasonable Doubt I wasn't into it like that off the rip like I was with The Blueprint
