DJ Quik sounding songs
« on: May 18, 2014, 12:43:25 PM »
in the wake of Mr Theo's thread about Quik's uncredited involvement in several major songs from other artists, I wanted to discuss songs from other artists who sound influenced by Quik's signature sound, two songs come to mind immediately

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/dL8L1iiwwQA" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/dL8L1iiwwQA</a>

a massive hit in the 90's, produced by Janet's main producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis

produced by Keith Crouch

i remember somebody posting this track a while back...it sounds REALLY like a quik/g-one/rob bacon era production 8)

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/NVTUeHDtMSk" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/NVTUeHDtMSk</a>

apologies for the poor YT quality, mp3 off my cd for downloaders > http://www2.zippyshare.com/v/84560715/file.html

edit: the cd booklet was destroyed (bought a cheap copy) but with some fresh googling it's clear why it sounds exactly like a quik beat.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warryn_Campbell (producer of the record)

"Warryn Campbell (nicknamed "Smiley" or "Baby Dubb") is an American record producer. He specializes in gospel music and R&B. Campbell originally got his start as a session musician and producer under the tutelage of DJ Quik on his third album Safe + Sound."

looks like he got some co-production credits with quik (on 'Well') and various other stuff, gonna have to check out his production discography in full. digging through it will probably yield a lot of quality, quik influenced stuff. gotta admit i wasn't clued up to dude, has a lot of dope credits. the sounds on this one are to a tee what quik was doing in an earlier era - bass, drums & guitar licks are very familiar.
