All this talk about Kendrick not sounding West Coast is ridiculous. Kendrick doesn't have an accent that would make me think he's East or even South. He's West! And I'm not saying this based on the new shit that people are just listening too. Kendrick has released multiple albums/mixtapes and people are still talking about his style? I had KDot tracks before he even dropped Section 80. Never did that even cross my mind; people are confused. What Kendrick does not sound like is a "GANGSTER RAPPER". This isn't about him not sounding West. It's about him not being a gangster rapper. This doesn't mean he doesn't sound WEST. Kendrick is just a type of rapper that has made it big on the West, who isn't a gangster rapper. But he is not the first of his kind on the WEST. He could easily blend it with Pharcyde, Souls of Mischief, Tha Liks, Hiero, Dilated Peoples, Madlib, Lootpack, Defari, Aceyalone, Jurassic 5 etc etc etc. He isn't the first of his kind in the West. There's been a westcoast tradition of backpack/hip hop rappers since waaaay back. People just need to catch the fuck up. Not just a tradition but LEGENDARY "underground" groups like [The Pharcyde] and [Souls of Mischief] who had their own unique style and sounded like nobody. Kendrick and AB Soul are more to this liking, stylistically. Of course, they are also able to blend the rawness of the West but that's not who Kendrick is. He's more of a Hip Hopper. That's all it is.

I think you're providing evidence that supports my point.  Basically all of those groups don't get nearly the same level of attention here as Tha Dogg Pound because they didn't make the kind of music that could be called stereotypically west coast*.  Fans of west coast rap are generally fans of stereotypical west coast gangsta rap -- that "sound" -- rather than backpack rap.  So it should come as no surprise that those groups you mentioned don't amass the same levels of appreciation from this board, because what really captures the hearts and minds of a global fanbase is not where an artist is from but how he sounds.  At the end of the day, fans don't care where you're from provided you make the kind of music that they like to listen to.

I'm just explaining WHY new west coast artists that don't sound stereotypically west coast like Kendrick don't get "love" on this board.  It's not because we're stuck in the 90s.

*except for maybe Tha Liks -- I don't think you should have included them in that list

I see what you're saying. My point remains the same though. We both agree on what Kendrick is but that doesn't mean he doesn't "sound" West Coast. It just means he isn't a gangster rapper. The West originated the G Rap, so that's why we're identified with it but that's what most people were on in those days. Everyone jocked the West style.Everyone was doing some type of G/street rap. It wasn't just in the West. Times have now changed and we're on a different era. Seems to me that the backpack style is getting more love than ever, so guys like Kendrick are taking advantage of this movement. But I don't necessarily agree with those who think he doesn't sound West. It's more about him not doing gangster rap.

Tha Liks were never G rappers either. They were more along the side of pure Hip Hop as well.

smh at the first two posts being meta-commentary instead of actually talking about the track, much irony.

shit sounded good, way better than i. jazzy track with spacey sounds and plenty of soul, more tracks like this would be great.

performance starts around 4 mins

Not feeling this new direction that Kendrick is taking at all, to me its over pretentious and just give me Arrested Development/Spearhead vibes lol.

Joined the forum years ago because of my love for west coast sounds, so obviously I expect majority to be from or fond of that era.

Saying that, I read most of the posts in different sections, maybe not respond to all the post.

The Forum is called Dubcc for a reason.

Back to the post, I like this song a lot, I like 'i' too.

Can't wait for Kendrick's new album, one of the few artist nowadays that I try to understand the message of their songs.

J.cole's new album and PRYHME are the 2 albums that have been making my December a beautiful one.

I know K.Dot will deliver

did he say that it was new ? did he talk about section .80 in his post ? look, we get it, you were listening to Kendrick before section .80, big deal, do you want a medal or something ? cause that's all you ramble about lol, like you are the only one on this forum (LOL), like it gives your opinion any legitimacy (re-LOL). if you want to be taken seriously, drop the rants and try typing coherent posts using credible arguments other than "you're not from the USA so your opinion doesn't count", "you're irrelevant because you listen to 20 year old music".

plus you said "most of you don't like kendrick", but have you checked the response to this thread ? it's mostly positive feedback aside from a few posters. point is you're conflicted because if Kendrick doesn't get love from someone you're gonna say "this forum is stuck in the past", if Kendrick gets love you're gonna say "you just like him now cause he's hype but i've been listening to him since way back". you're a walking contradiction who is barely making any sense in his posts. it looks to me you have an ego problem and want to be seen as a kind of prophet or trendsetter regarding music, you're dissing people talking about g-funk but you're making threads about 2pac and Warren G, isn't that contradictory ?
