Snoop Doggy Dogg Tha Doggfather diss to Dr. Dre

I've always wondered this but on the track "Snoop Bounce" Snoop made a reference…."I've been there & done that…no inspiration…all day demonstration V conversation"

Was this line directed at Dr. Dre?? We all know back at that time Dres single for his label Aftermath was "Been There Done That".  My thing is if it quacks like duck it must be a duck.  So it was a shot at his former mentor influence by that "Fuck Dre" campaign Death Row was rolling with at that time.  I just never heard Snoop nor Tha Dogg Pound speak on this or brought it up.  Thought I'd copy and paste ya'll.

Great thread.. and yes, that seems like a clear shot at Dre.  In that classic Source cover Issue from early summer 96' when Dre left Death Row, Dre says in there something to the effect of "Fuck Gangsta Rap.  That shit is so fuccin dead."...then he goes on to say that rappers can't just cuss and talk gangsta shit on a record anymore that they got to start coming with some creativity and lyrics.

So, I always kind of wondered if Snoop's Intro on Doggfather was a shot at Dre. 

...and to the threadstarter, I didn't really understand that line from the song you mentioned, but yes, it could certainly be a shot at Dre, but what the hell does "V conversation mean"?

Tired of people saying that.. where's MDogg when I need him... anyone over 30 who was a hip-hop fan and bought Doggystyle when it came out and spent the next two years anticipating Snoops album knows exactly what kind of a catastrophic flop and failure the Doggfather album was.  I swear to this day anytime I start bumping this album the weather starts to turn to rain...

I bought it the day it came out, and yes, I was very disappointed with it.  Groupie, and You Thought was about the only two tracks I was feeling at the time.  I was expecting Doggystyle II and it wasn't even close.  Now I look back on it more fondly, but you have to remember at the time, hardly anyone knew who Tray Deee was, LBC crew was brand new, etc.  It wasn't the G-Funk sound at all, many of the beats were stripped down.  Dogg Pound, Nate Dogg, Warren G was barely on it, after being all over his first album, no Dre production.  No 2Pac at all, and I think the album was released a week after Makaveli, so people were anticipating some new Pac on there.  Remember, there was no internet, the tracklist wasn't leaked or anything.  I had no idea what to expect.  He changed his flow to that stupid laid back quiet flow that he kept for 10 years that most people hated. 

True, I don't think there was any way this could have lived up to the high expectations, but yeah, I thought it sucked when I first bought it.  It's better now looking back, but it does remind me of rainy darker days when I listen to it.

Hence why I said "on another spin" many moons later with hindsight being looked at through rose tinted glasses.

At the time it was straight up wackness but compared to what we've endured from Snoop from there to here its a solid effort.

In many ways it is Snoops version of Makaveli - as that album was so characteristic of Pac at his apogee this was to Snoop at his perigee. Note:

Makaveli was tight, raw, focussed and concise. Covered a huge breadth and depth and hinted at layers as yet undiscovered nor tapped.

Doggfather was the opposite with its sloppy selections, over long running time, repetitiousness and narrow focus that recycled the same old same old again and again.

I forgot what interview it was from, but Snoop said he was upset because he approached Dre to contribute to his album and Dre was too busy working on his Aftermath album.  Also, it was later revealed that Suge had a big part in Dre not helping out with Doggfather (obvious reasons of course). 

I think the album came out pretty good and was a little bit ahead of its time, that's why people initially hated the album.
