DJ Quik interview on NPR's Microphone Check series

After 24 years in the music business, the producer and rapper from Compton, Calif., knows what's going on. He told Microphone Check studio secrets, a Rick James story, and all about the funk.

"You gotta get funky to make records that give people the frown face when they hear it," he says. "You know, George Clinton-style. That's what George and them used to do. George and them didn't bathe. So I started doing that. ... It's a different attitude when you go in the studio all fastidious and clean. You don't want to get down. Like, 'Hey. Look at my watch. My shoes are white. I'm not gon' party.' You know what I mean? 'I ain't finna write no song. I'm finna take some pictures of me.' You know, that's them days. But we was in there getting stinky. And it got on the music."

Wow I just read James's autobiography a week ago (brilliant) and I was looking for a QUik interview about his Rick James collabo and couldn't find anything and here it is. RHaven't read the whole interview but it seems like a great read. Thanks for posting it man.

oh yeah ? that's great but Unsung has really declined in quality. they used to make hour long quality documentaries, but nowadays it's down to barely 30 minutes and they're not very thorough in the way they cover the artists' careers. plus a lot of the artists they chose aren't really "unsung". they fucked up big time with Too Short's unsung. Rick James's unsung was alright but not very thorough either and they didn't interview a lot of people, I wish they reached out to Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Eddie Murphy, Berry Gordy, and touched on his influence on rap with Hammer, Snoop, Quik, 4 Tay, etc.

they should do a E-40 unsung as well but their rap knowledge seems limited. I preferred when they stuck to R&B/Funk acts like LeVert, ConFunkShun or Zapp. Three of my favorite episodes.

cheers always love to hear in-depth quik interviews. dude is full of interesting insights 8)

seems like he was involved in busta's 'get you some'. likely the drum sounds - he says where the snare comes from and uses the same samples on 'that niggaz crazy' 8)

good lookin 8)

more cool info about his drum loop (that one we all know) from the late 90s is also on that 'shackles' joint from 'mary mary'. never even realised and everyone knows that track. again the producer is warryn 'baby dubb' campbell who worked with quik and also used those drums on other records.

Dope news to hear, thanks Mr. Theo for the insider exclusives. I think a full album from him should have a few dope tracks on it. The production at least will be super clean.

Some good points in this NPR interview

- Quik practiced talk box for 2 years..with the approval of Roger.

- Quik involvement on that 2006 Busta album..is greater than we realize.

- DJ Quik mixed the "Get Involved" track ..Quik have a pass on that Saadiq studio in LA (Remember my Midnight Love,What They Do theory)

- A possible G1 beef at the end of the interview.

- "That's Niggaz Crazy" wasn't badly mixed, was mixed, just to be distorted, purposely.
