It's a Masterpiece in terms of Context and Musical Elements attached to Historical and Present Facts.

You also have to realize, that just becuz White People didn't care too much for the content doesn't mean White Folx and Everyone else (including Us) doesn't acknowledge it as a Classic.  Timeless, we'll see... Classic tho, for sure

The Media has been trying So So hard to downgrade this Album but Yall just simply can't no matter how hard you try to force this Fabricated Idea that somehow we shouldn't enjoy this album just as much or in the same vein as "The Chronic" or "efil4zaggin".  I actually think the whole attempt is pretty hilarious.   Word to The main man Jay-Z and RockStar Bey

Go head tho, keep trying.  Murder us in cold blood and turn around and say we're weirdos top to bottom while simultaneously "jocc'n our steeze"

I'm here becuz I get it, not becuz I wanna be.

To paraphrase Bill Maher (among others), "Question the Source, Just ask"

Ask me.  I never understood why y'all never did that.  Guessing was going to be y'all downfall in this area and I saw that the whole time lol.

If something is highly and universally critically acclaimed then it can't be considered a flop, in my opinion anyway.  And that's regardless of how much the product sells.
Like Blood$ says, the album dropped sort of quickly and out of nowhere (even though people were expecting it), and it being his second major-label album means that there was perhaps slightly less hype this time around.
But yeah, I don't think you can consider 'To Pimp A Butterfly' a flop.

the album is almost gold, in this day and age it's definitely not a flop, especially considering the low commercial appeal this album has (beat wise and content wise).

the hype the album garnered when it dropped (and when King Kunta dropped) in advance alone prevents this from being a flop IMO. I think Kendrick has been getting a lot of hate for reasons that he's not responsible of : people getting overhyped and ranking this album a timeless classic after just one week was essentially a disservice to Kendrick. I think him and that control verse back then had already started to anger listeners who actually care about these considerations.

btw he's shooting his second video in the bay as we speak

Who else in rap history dropped a better second album?  It's debatable this is a better rap album than GKMC.  Again, it's totally different, but TPAB is a serious fucking album, not to be fucked with.

oohh gee... I don't know, maybe the Marshal Mathers LP?

Was an album that polarised views. It wasn't as good as GKMC imo anyway

Regarding who in rap dropped a better sophomore there are many but Public Ememy immediately spring to mind. Brian's right about Eminem but SSLP was his second album lol

If we are talking about flop as in using the fame and success he garnered after the first album and the Grammy appearance in specific then yeah it was a flop.

If we are talking a flop based on the critical reaction it got upon release and how it holds up months later; maybe maybe not.
