why do u think that is?snoop is actually more famous than jaybut for some reason, jay still has the ears of hip-hop consumers do you know why?
I don’t think Snoop pushed his music like he used to and he needs to learn to listen what is going on out there as far as depth and how to offset and compliment the sound to break through that … I truly felt Def Jam and Jay-Z bought the number 1 albums so he can place high but for 4:44 to get #1 I’m sure it was the same there were major rumors that labels bought their billboard sports especially def jam On the other hand Watch the Throne sold like 4x Platinum For Snoop to truly get a hit these days I think it’s possible he usually gets on a huge remix is part of a bit damn near year every year for a long ass time even in Spanish/Banda sound he got like 2 hits with Banda MS But he isn’t selling much not even Eminem is on Billboard top 10 right now no hip hop album is currently… which is wild cuz no one has sold more than Em…. No one
I'm interested to hear your answer. Imo, there are a number of factors.1. Jay is from NYC, so he has a built-in advantage, since NYC hip hop has always been given more respect than other regions. Hence, Jay is considered more "real hip hop" than Snoop. Also, NYC is the biggest market in the U.S. L.A. is the second biggest market, so Snoop caters to #2 whereas Jay caters to #1.2. Snoop ventured away from hip hop. He's more of a celebrity now than a rapper. He sells drinks and does shows with Martha Stewart and appears at the Olympics, etc. As a result, I wouldn't be surprised if teenagers nowadays don't really think of Snoop as a rapper, just as when I was a teenager, I thought of Will Smith as an actor first and foremost, not a rapper. Same with Mark Wahlberg and to an extent even LL Cool J (during his Deep Blue Sea and Halloween H20 days). I learned about these guys first as actors and THEN learned that they used to be rappers. Jay hasn't watered down his image, instead preferring to remain known as a rapper. Imo, this is because Jay doesn't have the potential to reinvent himself the way that Snoop has because Jay doesn't have the necessary charisma, but I digress...3. Snoop doesn't try to sell himself with the image of being a really respectable rapper these days. Jay and his fans will always try to maintain the perception that Jay is "lyrical," whereas Snoop has never tried to be lyrical, which hurts his credibility among the hip hop intelligentsia and baccpaccer crowds. Snoop just doesn't spend marketing dollars on reaching those groups. As a result, they view him as a clown who wears goofy oversized Bootsy Collins glasses who makes bad albums with no substance/lyricism.I could probably come up with some other reasons as well if I give it more thought.
the reason snoop doesn’t sell much all goes back to what dre said…snoop simply does way too much … he releases shit regularly and puts out unconcentrated efforts year round … he oversaturates his image with watered down output .. unlike jay, who will put out 1 concentrated effort and then fall out of the public eye until he resurfaces… so it makes every appearance an event that becomes highly anticipated… where as snoop is constantly in the public eye putting out anything and everything .. so when he releases an album it’s uneventful ……..then to make matters worse, snoop doesn’t have the marketing etiquette and promotional machine behind him … so jay-z has def jam to really push his albums properly, with concentrated singles, commercials, radio play, etc….while snoop has been releasing his albums independently and through small labels like empire etc…. which doesn’t have the same resources to give an album that def jam notoriety in terms of marketing eminem is cut from the jay-z cloth, which is why his releases are events and that’s why having this released on Interscope with Dre and Iovine in control creatively makes this potentially snoops biggest album in over 20 years should be interesting to see how this unfolds
Oh, you're answering a different question than I thought was being asked. Sorry. I thought we were addressing why Snoop doesn't have the respect of the hip hop community the same way Jay does, and I still think that's because Snoop isn't "lyrical", makes a lot of goofy decisions that gives him mainstream appeal but dilutes his hip hop credentials, etc. I feel you when you say Snoop spreads himself too thin, so his music comes and goes and nobody notices. But that's because Snoop himself doesn't take it so seriously. I honestly think he believes in throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks, whereas Jay and Em believe in finely crafting their output and putting all their eggs in one basket. These are two different approaches to handling one's career.I do get what you're saying, though.
