With technology and innovation the way it is, if you think producers should be playing all their own live instruments and such and any that don't aren't 'real' producers, you're living in the past man.

That's like saying someone isn't a real man because they didn't go out and build their own house or went out and hunted their own food.  There's no need to do that anymore.  Doesn't make you any less of a man, times change.

I agree with you—though I hope you aren't including AI in that evolution, because I'm very critical of the use of AI in music creation.

Sorry for saying "OK Einstein"; you seem like a chill guy. I just felt like you were lecturing me, and I didn't really appreciate that.

Getting back to Daz—since you know his music well, how would you rank his solo albums and the ones he did with Kurupt?

It is a shame that Snoop and DPG don't utilize Warren more today.  I honestly don't know if Warren just doesn't produce anymore or what the issue is.  To my knowledge, he isn't really signed exclusively anywhere, so he could probably sell them beats directly and make good money doing so.

After "I Want It All", him and Dre patched things up and unfortunately Warren turned into a bit of a Dr Dre clone and started making music resembling Dr Dre production and Warren lost his unique sound.  The Game Don't Wait RMX and Looking at You, etc. sound alot more like Dre than Warren.  And i know he was jumping on what was selling at the time and he felt GFunk wasn't really selling anymore and he changed his sound.  No harm in trying that.  Problem is now, he could easily go back to his early GFunk sound and it would be great for his legacy and career, but he's still chasing the sound of whatever is popular now hoping to land a radio hit.  Warren needs to be the best Warren G he can be, and not trying to be the best Wiz Khalifa or whatever current popular producers are doing these days.

lookin at you and game dont wait remix were both produced by dre LOL

Duh, i know, what i'm saying is he started to go the direction of more Dre production and Dre-sounding beats and less of 'what brought him to the table' which was his original GFunk production.

It's all good man, I enjoy the discussion.  It's nice to have people that can debate, and we can disagree and have points and counterpoints and not have it break down to pointless name calling and other juvenile behavior, so props for keeping it on the upper level.  There are a few people here who hold personal grudges and can't do that, as i'm sure you've seen, some interactions turn very ugly and personal.

Gosh, there's so many, it's hard to rank every one, but for Daz solos, my top 6 would be:

Revenge, Retaliation and Get Back
Dazamataz
RAW
Tha Dogg Pound Gangsta LP
DPGC U Know What I'm Throwin Up
This Life I Lead

Top 5 for Daz and Kurupt (Dogg Pound) albums:

Dogg Food
Dillinger and Young Gotti II
Doggy Bagg
Dogg Pound 2002
We All We Got

Top 5 for Kurupt:

Streetz Iz A Mutha
Space Boogie
Kuruption
Against The Grain
Tales From My Hood

Our lists anywhere close to the same?

I have to give Tales From My Hood some more time to see if it has any replay value but on the first few listens I liked it

I would put RAW right under RRGB...Dazamataz I thought had way too many tracks but the dope ones were really dope...if it was condensed it might have been 3rd on my list

as far as Dogg Pound albums I would put Dillinger and Young Gotti right under Dogg Food

Thanks for understanding; I completely agree with you about keeping the conversation respectful.

That's a great list and it's almost identical to mine:

For Daz Dillinger's solo albums:

- RAW
- Dazamataz
- Retaliation, Revenge & Get Back
- Tha Dogg Pound Gangsta LP
- DPGC U Know What I'm Throwin Up
- Only On The Left Side
- This Is The Life I Lead

For Kurupt's solo albums:

- Tha Streetz Iz A Mutha
- Space Boogie: Smoke Odyssey
- Same Day Different Shit
- Streetlights
- Against Tha Grain (Death Row Version)
- Tales From My Hood

For Dogg Pound albums:

- Dogg Food
- Dillinger & Young Gotti
- Dogg Chit
- 100 Wayz
- Dillinger & Young Gotti II
- We All We Got

I couldn't bring myself to stick to just six albums for Daz because Only On The Left Side is an album I really loved and still listen to. It's the same for Dogg Pound and Kurupt albums, it's hard to limit myself to a top 5.

As for Kurupt's albums, i know this might be surprising but i never really connected with Kuruption. Aside from a few classics like "C Walk" or "We Can Freak It," it didn't leave a lasting impression on me. I feel like he did better work later on.

You're right, ranking these albums is a tough task given how many there are, not to mention the compilations and so on and I'm happy to see Dazamataz making the top list, because it's an excellent album. Pulling off a double album isn't easy, and i think Daz nailed it. Especially since it had been a few years since he released an album he produced himself, the previous two were produced by Trippy Keez.

Warren didn't have the longevity.  From about 93-99 he was a beast, including producing probably the best GFunk album of all time Conversation.  I always give Warren his props.   But to be fair, objectively speaking, he hasn't done much in the past 20 years, whereas Daz is still going strong.  I think Warren had a good team behind him, Greedy Greg, Ricky Rouse, and a few others that he doesn't have at his disposal anymore.

lets say 93-2004... return of the regulator is one of most underrated records of that post 2000 west coast hip hop.

Also 213 album was a classic although it didnt have warren g production instead of "groupie luv" remix on maxi single.

after 2004, his fall off began with such weak albums like midnight hour g funk files etc...

and you are right about warren had a good musician team. as you mentioned greg, ricky rouse, del atkins, aj luke, sean thomas were on "take a look over your shoulder" and andrew gouche, craig brockman, marion williams on "return of the regulator". musicians worked on "i want it all" album are missing and uncredited unfortunately.

(since, to me, creating the instrumental meant being a producer).

no it doesnt mean being a producer. sometimes you just give the notes to an instrument player and let him play whats written on paper. it just makes you a musician on an album.

sometimes you let musicians to jam and improvise to the beat and if you like something you use it. that makes you musician and a writer/composer on an album.

if you compose melodies while jaming and improvising to the beat, and also you decide how track should proceed from start to end and you decide what kind of composition it needs with verses, chorus, bridges and whole structure. then it makes you a musician, writer/composer and a co producer on an album.

of course they do because they are produced by dr. dre

if you listen to Return of the regulator it is pure Warren G. sure they are some dr. dre influenced brass and strings but he was still using 90s type of walking bass guitars, slap bass gutiars, electro/rhytm/wah guitars, rhodes and keys, and etc... it was fucking post 2000s and you cant keep it going with mid 90s g-funk. he really put his own flavor to what dre made popular for whole wide world after 2001 album.

another interesting tidbit

dr. dre is the only other person to have a production credit on a dj quik album with "put it on me"
