NBA Finals Hit New Low....

The final ratings for the NBA Finals between San Antonio and New Jersey were the lowest since the Nielsen ratings service began using the current method 27 years ago.

The six games, all aired in prime time on ABC, drew a 6.5 with a 12 share.

The previous low came in 1981, when Boston and Houston drew a 6.7 rating, according to Nielsen Media Research. This year's highest mark came in Game 6, when the Spurs won the series.

By contrast, last year's finals, between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Nets, had a 10.2 rating on NBC even though it went four games and was less competitive. That series, however, featured two of the game's biggest stars - the Lakers' Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant.

Star power appears to be a factor - one of the highest-rated games ever was Michael Jordan's final game for Chicago against Utah in 1998. It drew a rating of 18.7, more than three times the overall rating for this year's series.

The Nets-Spurs series also was a defensive struggle with long scoring droughts and low shooting percentages by both teams.

The rating is the percentage of all homes with TVs, whether they are in use. The share is the percentage of sets in use tuned to a particular program.

this can be expected. U have a finals, where most dont believe one side stands a chance. The west and east is a mismatch in most peoples eyes. And ontop of it, u have a team from San Antonio. Not NY, not LA, a team where the fans are sumwhat limited to the people in THAT city. It has nothing to do with the actual games, its how many fans there are. If the Raiders played the Cowboys in the superbowl...and the final score was 3-0, it would still be the most watched Superbowl ever.

Not surprising at all... Seeing that the games were so defensive in nature and that San Antonio was the opposing team. No offense to the team or the fans or anything, they're a good team and all, but like Stylz said the fans are pretty much limited to the people of San Antonio. Shit is different with teams like the Lakers now is. I live almost halfway across the globe and I'm a fan of the Lakers! I'm sure you remember when the Bulls were a team just like that years ago. Everybody used to love the Bulls - they were cool, almost unbeatable and they had Jordan. Now it's the Lakers - they have Kobe & Shaq, people like Jack Nicholson and Snoop go to see their games... They have appeal. Too bad they didn't win this year though.
