ICE CUBE/DRE--SURE THING???
« on: September 23, 2003, 09:09:54 AM »
I'M SURE MOST OF US ON THIS BOARD ARE ICE CUBE FANS AND WE KNOW THAT CUBE AND DRE HAVE HAD SUCCESS  TOGETHER IN THE PAST.  MY QUESTION IS DO WE ALL THINK THAT OUTSIDE OF THE WEST, DOES ANYONE REALLY LOOK FORWARD TO THIS ALBUM.  IN MY OPINION, THE LONGER WE HAVE TO WAIT, THE LESS OF A CHANCE THIS ALBUM HAS OF BEING SUCCESSFUL  (PLATINUM OR DOUBLE PLATINUM).  I'M NOT SURE IF CUBE CAN EVER BE AS HUNGRY AS HE WAS AND IF DRE'S NEW SOUNDS WILL BE ABLE TO BRING THE BEST OUT OF CUBE.  ANYWAY, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE DRE, SNOOP, NATE DOGG, REN (PLEASE MAKE IT HAPPEN DRE) ON THE ALBUM.  I'M NOT SURE IF EMENIM OR 50 WOULD BE A GREAT FIT AND I WISH WE COULD BYPASS WACK 10 ALTOGETHER.  WHAT DO YOU THINK????

I think you need to retype that without the caps lock on and then I'll read it.

Well it's hard for people to be hyped about the album since it hasn't even been officially announced yet. There's only been some news (at MTV.com and the like) that mentioned that Cube has been writing some stuff, but no word of recording has been said by anyone.

But if they want this to be successful, it's all up to promotion. That shouldn't be a problem though, since making an album with somebody well established like Cube isn't exactly high risk.

As for guests - you got to have a WSC track there! That's formed into a bit of a tradition over the years - when a WSC member drops a solo, there's a WSC group track there too. Wack 10? Get the fuck outta here. Other guests that I'd personally like having there would be Ren & Dre - they still did their thing on Hello, no reason why they couldn't do it again. I guess Snoop would be cool there too. Dunno. I think 50 would sound good with Cube and the Eminem collabo... sounds interesting. At first it seems that their styles really don't go together, but when I think more about it, I think it would be cool to hear what those two could come up with. But not too many guests - if you get a WSC rtack there, an NWA track there, then you could have 2-3 other collabo tracks MAX. What I think anyway.

Oh and who would make a dope guest (if he doesn't actually retire) is DMX. Remember We Be Clubbin' remix?

But talking about this album at this time is like talking about Detox - stupid and pointless.

Hell no it ain't gonna happen. The only times they even mentioned the album, they kept saying "We've got a few things to iron out, blah blah blah".  In other words, they never even inked a deal.  With Dre's record, even WITH an inked contract, only about 1 out of 5 albums gets released.

I guess I just don't understand why Dre wastes so much time with bullshit promises.  Does anyone remember when he first signed Rakim?? Dre was on MTV talking about how big it was going to be and you see what happened.  Obviously, he was instructed to make 50 cents album as big as possible and he added some bangers to Obie Trice's joint.  I thought one of the reasons for leaving DR in the first place was to be his own man and to call the shots himself. I'm not a big fan of Rakims but you have to wonder why they could not come up with one, just one hot single to start it off.  I'm just not sure if Dre calls any shots anymore at Aftermath.  I think Dre would like to see the Cube project happen but Jimmy Iovine and Interscope may not see it as profitable enough.  Maybe The Wash project (which I thought was a decent album) ruined Dre's credibility in Interscope's eyes .  I guess as a fan of the Good Doctor, I would like to see him as more of a shot caller at this late stage of his career....

Like I've said 1000 times before, you're right, Dre isn't calling the shots, Jimmy is.   And so far, almost all of the shots haven't been long shots at all, Jimmy won't take a chance on Dre.

Look:

The Aftermath: Pretty safe bet for an album, the Chronic had sold millions, everybody knew anything Dre did would be huge.  Album sold decent (1 million I believe).

Eminem: Aftermath was DEAD at this point.  Dre was working on an album almost solo, he was working on Chronic 2000 with some no-names he had around, and had let almost the entire Aftermath staff go.  Jimmy DID take a slight chance on this album, Dre liked Em and wanted to release the album, and Jimmy stood behind Dre and let him do that.  Jimmy took a shot on Dre, and Dre came through with BIGGGGG sales.

Chronic 2001 - No long shot here, everybody knew with Eminem on it, and with Dre's success on the original Chronic, this album was going to be huge.

Eminem's 2nd Album - No long shot here, Eminem had proven himself twice already.

D-12 - This was just to keep em happy, and plus, they knew it would do good, since Eminem was on the entire album!   No long shot here.  No chances.

Truth Hurts - Halfway bombed.  This was Dre's baby, Dre was really into it, and Jimmy let him do it.  The album didn't do very well, and Rakim's presence on the single didn't blow it up.  I think it sold Gold, which was dissapointing.  Jimmy took a chance here, and got dissapointed.

Eminem's third album - No chance here, everybody knew it would do good, and it did.

The Wash - BOMBED, and it shouldn't have.  The album should have been big, since Dre & Snoop were on it, plus Eminem, etc. but it didn't sell shit.  Dre REALLY dissapointed Jimmy on this one... He didn't even really take a chance, and it still didn't sell.

50 Cent - Everybody knew 50 was about to blow up, his incredible mixtape success pretty much ensured that, PLUS, he'd already had a big radio hit with "Wanksta".  Releasing his album wasn't any kind of stretch at all, Jimmy knew he was going to make money.

As a consequence of the Truth hurts album, and the Wash album, both of which Jimmy took chances on, he aint' gonna take anymore long shot chances with Dre.  He'll take chances with Eminem before then.  Plus, Dre sold a majority of the company to Jimmy, for big big profits, but now he doesn't have hardly any say so in what gets released.  Rakim is NOT a safe bet, there's no way in hell he was going to get released.  I don't even think Cube will ever get released under Jimmy, Cube's last couple albums dissapointed (greatest hits, and peace).  Jimmy ain't gonna throw money at that when he can have a new Em or 50 album whenever he wants.

Nice post Scorpion...I agree with almost everything you said except that I don't think even Jimmy knew 50's joint would be this big.  I think they figured that 2 or 3 times platinum would be great.. I must say that I still don't know what happened with The Wash soundtrack..I know it was not a classic but with Dre and Snoop and Busta all with hot tracks, I thought platinum was a definite.

I don't mean to be rude or anything but why would Kerrideth listen to anything that someone who is a friend of Meggan's, are you her sister, did you save her life or what? And whats Dre's media number (as in whats a media number)? And what should we say in the emails and, again, why will they listen to us?
