I think so. In another thread people were calling Obie Trice's new album a classic & I see albums labeled classics so often it's not funny. I think that hype clouds a lot of people's judgement. Most people I know who listened to 50 when he started with Em hate him now. The same thing with Ja Rule when 50 became big. You rarely hear about Nelly now that he has no single out. In reality, I think that there are maybe 10-15 albums I would give a 5/5 rating.
Public Enemy said it best:
DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!
PS I know this got a little off-topic. Sorry

Most hip-hop is now keyboard driven, because the majority of hip-hop workstations have loops and patches that enable somebody with marginal skills to put tracks together,...
Unfortunately, most hip-hop artists gravitated towards the path of least resistance by relying on these pre-set patches. As a result, electric guitar and real musicians became devalued, and a lot of hip-hop now sounds the same.

Everybody has his own definition of a classic. To a gothic "The Chronic" is not a classic for example, for a hip hop head it is.
And everybody can judge himself if he finds an album/song classic. Personallly, I think there are lots of great albums, but only a few albums classic albums.
If you think "Cheers" is a classic, you may think that, but that does not mean I have to agree with you. In fact, I don't think you can say an album is classic when you haven't seen the impact of the album yet.
Albums like "Doggystyle", "The Chronic", "All Eyez On Me" and "E. 1999 Eternal" have added something to the sound of music and that's why you can call them classics.
Everybody should, but in my eyes "They Never Saw Me Coming" is a classic too. This album has had (how weird this may sound) an influence on my life and on my taste in music too.

People are always way too quick to label things classics.
The whole point of the word classic is that its been proven + tested by time, so anyone calling something a classic right away, and I believe even an instant classic too.. is just hyped, or hyping.
