Biggest misconceptions about tha West
« on: October 08, 2003, 10:46:20 PM »
What would u say tha biggest misconceptions are about tha west, as far as rap and culture goes?

These are what I think are some of the biggest:

1. Myth: 2Pac was the king of the west when he was alive, and when he died, so did the West. Also, Pac was the frontrunner of the west coast, and was the biggest influence.
Fact: Yeaaaaaah right. Back in 96, L.A. loved Pac, but bein 100% honest, we loved Ice Cube and Snoop more. People were throwin up W's because of the westside connection, not because of Pac. When Pac died, it hit us bad as fuck. But we didn't even think twice that it was the end of tha west coast's era on top. I didn't even heard somebody say the west died with Pac until last year.

2. Myth: Snoop is one of the biggest crips in L.A., and he's the reason everybody is doin the C-Walk.
Fact: Most of us on this board know the truth about that. Snoop barely ever C-walks, and the reason everybody is C-Walkin is because WC brought it nationwide back in 96 on music videos.

3. Myth: If u do tha c-walk and u not a crip u will get jumped or shot
Fact: I grew up in L.A., and for the 18 years I've been there, and all the parties I have been to, I have yet to see somebody get jumped shot or banged on because of how they walked. Even tho most non-affiliates do tha clown walk now, back when people who didn't bang were doin the c-walk, they always did it different from how most crips did, and they didn't throw up shit, so most bangers could care less. But tha way that rappers talk on videos and songs, u would think it is 100% forbidden and that u will get jumped on site for it...yeah that's true at house parties where nobody knows u, but at clubs and shit nobody cares.

4. Myth: U CAN'T wear blue or red in L.A.
Fact: HAHAHAHA is all I can say. Even tho most people know different, people still ask me "i heard u can't wear any blue or red, is that true?" and I just laugh. It all depends where u are, but even at that, it depends on what u have on, not just the colors. Wearin black and white with a black NY hat and black chucks is much riskier than wearin blue jeans, blue air forces, and a blue basketball jersey.

What else could y'all list?

5. Myth: All West Coast Rap is about Bitches and Bullets, and Dissing

pretty obvious really.. people forget the west diverse as hell.. more so than other regions because its more ethnically/culturaly diverse itself.

I can't really think of an other myth right now, but your list is definitely true (I don't know about that L.A. thing of course, but I guess it's also true  ;))

Funny you say that, my girl's brother in law is from Pacoima 13 but lives in San Fernando.  Its almost like an oxymoron.

I agree.  the west has no unity anymore w/o pac.  He is not the only reason the west started doin bad tho.  but when he died look at what happened to DR.  and at that time DR was the biggest label in rap.

it was cos pac was hooked up with the bay and LA guys. not too many of the rappers even did that before.. hes got a range of artists on all eyez on me, like cbo, richie rich, kurupt, nate, daz, quik,b legit, e40, dre, 4tay, snoop , dru down,.... 2pac in a sense united the bay cats with the los angeles ones, which created a strong west coast entirerty, but since he passed away, the connection between the bay and LA has also seemed to fade away, which kinda killed the west coast reign.

I dont know man nowadays the music all sounds the same to me.  bitches, 64's, crips, bloodz, niggaz gettin shot, "Im holdin the west down"(every west coast rapper says that), "yall dont show the west coast respect", "who you think started this or that.   Someone from the west needs to come from left field with some shit that souds different.  Every producer either sounds like DRE or Battlecat.  Someone needs to come out to the point where were like "this dont sound west coast" but it is just a new sound.

i agree with the above...I used to be all for the west and it slowly switched to the east because the West sound was gettin tired..I still like the peeps from the west who actually rap about more than crips\bloods\64's..Crooked I raps gangsta and has a superb flow.Sly Boogy, Dilated, Planet Asia, Ras Kass,Rasco are all doing original shit.

I won't say if that is or isn't true, but in 96 it definitely didn't seem like that.

The biggest albums that put the west coast on top were Doggystyle and Chronic, from Snoop and Dre. Now when Pac died, these artists hadn't even made a sequel to these albums. I think that when Snoop and Dre stopped workin for that period of time, that was when people were realizin the west was on a decline. It wasn't like when the Lakers just lost to the spurs and all on the news they were like "end of a dynasty" when Pac died, u didn't see any stories or hear any news about how the west was through. The Westside Connection was still hot, Dogg Pound was hot, and at the time, people were still waitin on what Dre and Snoop were comin back with. So personally I don't think Pac's death signified the end of the west reign. I'd say it was these things together that made the west fall:
1. Pac's death
2. Dre and Snoop not workin together
3. Dre droppin the weak compilation, and Doggfather not bein anywhere near the album Doggystyle was
4. Ice Cube's major decline
5. Death Row's total fall, other than just Pac's death
6. The south blowin up...before the south took off with No Limit, tha south supported tha west more than they supported the east, if u ask me. But since they blew up, they could give a fuck about tha west other than our old artists.
7. People got tired of gangsta rap as a whole, and moved on to flashy rap, and to strait thug rap that focused on the millions of clever ways to rap and say u killed somebody
8. No more "hood" movies based in L.A., which not only meant no more west coast soundtracks, but people jus weren't as interested in L.A.
9. Overall....the west was on top so hard, in rap, r&b, and movies, that they just burnt themselves out.

Well it's not always about what colors u wear, but how u wear em. Neighborhood crips wear NY hats, along with NC (North Carolina) hats. Sometimes, u might think the hat says NY but it really has a H instead of Y, meanin Neighborhood. Now many crips, especially when they are deep, wear shit like white tees, black hats, black jeans, and bangers are the main ones to wear black chucks.

Now for tha all blue outfit i described, if u are in a blood hot spot then of course they'll bang on u or start somethin. But in most places, even tho it's more crips anyway, people don't pay attention to blue as much. Crips wear certain jerseys, but say if u had on a Blue dodgers, Nets, Clippers, N.O. Hornets, nobody would really care. Blue jeans...nobody cares because bloods wear blue jeans. Blue shoes, if it's not blue chucks or K-Swiss (Kill a Slob Within Sixty Seconds/Kill a Slob When I See a Slob) then nobody cares. For blue hats, Dodgers hats are coo, and most hats are coo except a few baseball caps, and a few football.

I never head of that shit before. I live in N Hollywood/Burbank are and we dont have any crips around here.  What part of LA do the Neighborhood crips stay at?

and whats wit this black? now crips are wearing black? wtf?
