In my opinion the West Coast makes the best laid back hip hop, the problem sometimes is that even when they try to make a party beat it's laid back. East Coast and the Dirty South are probally better in that to me but none of them ever made that laid back West Coast sound.  8)

West coast music is by far my favorite.  I barely listen too much at all outside of the westcoast until recently I started checkin out other shit, cause the west coast ain't droppin much heat lately.  I lived in cali my whole life, and in 93 I got my first tape.  It was a mtv party to go tape, and I luved it.  I bumped just about every song.  It had Dre's Let Me Ride, 2Pac's I get around, tag team whoomp there it is, and shit I can't remember much else, some like k9 shit or snow or something, I think some swv.  that was my first experience of pac and dre.  I was 13 years old.  I thought it was pronounce 2pack, and I had no idea the song was actually about gettin w/hella girls, lol.  I thought he meant he was always cruisin around and shit, lol.  I luved those 2 songs anyway.  I also luved Onyx Slam, and I had their tape bacdafucup, and I luved it, and thought it was really crazy.  then I got the chronic on tape, and warren g's cd, man I luved regulate.  that shit was all over mtv.  then I was hooked on g funk and deathrow.

I've been into hiphop since the 80's but since I grew up in Southern California, I've always had a special love for west coast rap. I really got into the west coast when Ice-T was still going strong and Ice Cube had barely gone solo. Up until that time, I was bumping the hell out of Public Enemy, X-Clan, Heavy D and EPMD, stuff like that.

The west coast has always been ahead of the game from a musical aspect plus I could relate to a lot of the subject matter, living in Southern California and all. Ice Cube, Ice-T and later 2pac unapologetic no holds barred style interested me immediately and producers such as Cold 187um, DJ Aladdin, Ant Banks, DJ Quik and Dr. Dre were light years ahead of their time, multi-layering samples, using live instruments and funky grooves years before the Roots first LP. Were it not for the west coast, hip hop production would still be thin and simplistic accross the board instead of the musical mosaic it has become over the years.
