understand the culture?  LMAO!  Half these damn rappers don't even know their own fuckin culture, much less the majority of morons listening to the music.

People ain't tryna understand hip hop, or understand country, or understand rock and roll.

90% of people listen to something cause it sounds good, they don't give a fuck about understanding it.  Shit my best days of listening to music was back when I was a rookie and really didn't understand shit.  Thats when I loved music the most.  Now I'm all way more into it, and listen to it deeper, and analyze it, and understand it all better.  Now I judge it way harder and shit.  I remember my first experience from Pac was the song I get around.  Shit back then I thought he was talkin about cruising around his city all the time and being a busy guy and shit.

Culture shit.  You think Ja Rule, 50 Cent, Nelly, Fabolous, Ludacris give a fuck about culture?  There is hardly any culture in rap at all anymore.  Its about gunz, sex, drugs, money, bangin, and seemingly most important - how dope you are/how big of an ego you got.  there ain't no culture in rap music anymore.

took the words right out of my mouth

there is no culture in hip hop anymore. also people overrate hip hop's influence rock music is still the biggest selling type of music in the country and across the world. also rap music sales are going down where as other types of musics are seeing steady sales. also another point i want to bring up is,  half what rappers are doing now was already established by the 1970's by rock artists. everything rappers are diong now is IDENTICAL to what rockers like motley cru, white snake, bon jovi, ect. did in the 80's.

hip hop is a rip off straight up.........i still enjoy it but it's not as "real" as people make it out to be. the hip hop culture is non exisistant.

And what rockers did, somebody did before. So there aint no pioneers in the shit, cant nobody say them originated the shit. Shit been there, people doez it, who carez.

Enjoy the music and stop wondering that much!

Download anything by Alison Krauss, and you'll know why people love Bluegrass.

Yeah man, I feel ya.

But there's an important difference between understanding and enjoying. You can do the second without the first ;)

I don't expect everyone to have in-depth knowledge of all aspects of hip-hop culture, and I don't think it makes them any less of fans for it. If people are fans of mainstream rap they hear on the radio they shouldn't be ridiculed because they don't know 'bout Bambaata or Flash, or breaking or grafitti or anything else than happened, most probably, before they were born.

On the other hand, if you're going to do it properly, you gots to get some background, if only because it lets you put today's music and shit in perspective.

So I dunno... guess it depends on whether you want to hear or just listen.

The above statement sums up how I think about it. I couldn't have said it any better.

I think Hip-Hop culture is alive and well. It seems that people like Ja Rule, Jay-Z and others did hurt it, but real hip-hop still is heard. Rawkus Records is still releasing bangers, and some artist are still in it for the culture. The thing that hurt hip-hop, and Jigga admits it in Vibe, is making an album with hot singles, so that you water down your content, but sell more. I think 1997 was the death of Hip-Hop as we knew it, as everyone followed Puffy's steps and were all about the singles. Before, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Nas, Biggie, 2Pac, Rappin' 4 Tay, all them muthaphukkaz represented Hip-Hop. Coolio's biggest song was Gangsta's Paradise, str8 from the streets. Now though, people aren't making records for the streets they are making club bangers. Lil' Jon and the Eastside Boyz, 50 Cent, Ja Rule, Jay-Z, Neptunes production. Rap music has left the Hip-Hop culture. I still see B-Boyz breaking, and graffiti art is still being done in forms of intercity murals, and there is still the real emcees out in the world, and they are just as popular as they were back in the day, but rap music as a whole is no longer part of Hip-Hop, instead it is part of the record lables to sell a water down version of an art form to suburn kids, in hopes of going triple platnum.
