Mixtapes - Anyone else tired of this???
« on: January 28, 2004, 07:28:19 AM »
I remember a time when mixtapes were used to promote unsigned artsits or done to send out to companies, sold after live gigs out back or at the bar, or sold in the corner in a local record store etc. But now more and more big names are involved in creating mixtapes when there's really no need. Snoop, Realest (who has his own label) Alike - Daz, etc. They're making it harder for the little guys to come up.

The MTV generation aint really helping matters either. 50 cent has been there, done that and Snoop - with the money he has - why in the hell does he want to put his name to a mixtape with a bunch of artists when he can quite easily drop a nationwide release??

It's like a circius monkey, being promoted to an astranout then flying down to juggling some peanuts when there aint no need!

yeah, I guess that's what many artists think, so they put out tapes, it's easy, cheap and people expect alot less than they'd expect from an album. Also why is 50 so goddamn successful? Cause of mixtapes, he came up like that now he's on top so it's only logical others see the potential tapes got too. It's like a new trend and like most trends i think it's gonna be less popular again in a few years

also artists that are signed (u mentioned Snoop) wanna put shit out but cant just go up to the label exec and say i want my album out next month, they gotta go through all the bullshit to put out albums, where as mixtapes just come out because they aint gonna be big releases.

The problem is there are multiple versions of mixtapes too! Damn for example there's the DJ Jam version of Welcome 2 The Chuuch Mixtape, Daddy V's version, Snoop's version and DJ Whoo Kid's version! That's embarassing! But money is money.

seriously i wonder how much money one artist can make off of a mixtape. they sell those things for 5 bucks out here in new york and you got like 30 or 40 artists on one goddam cd. how many mixtapes can one sell?

Mixtapes got my own personal opinion split down the middle - they're excellent for promotion and experimentation...a lot of artists have songs that wouldn't make the cut on an official album but they still want the people to hear them nonetheless...so throw em on a mixtape!!!  Did an artist write some hot verses that didnt make it to an official song? Grab someone else's beat and do a little "freestyle"...by nature the "mixtape" is a dope ass idea.

On the other hand, the homie sic sense wisely pointed out that today's mixtapes "are neither mixed, nor are they tapes".  Not that it matters, but it hints at the overall lameness that some mixtapes have.  You can sense a lot of artists are putting out mixtapes just because it's the thing to do...Jesus christ, Dialated Peoples put out a mixtape...their albums sounds like mixtapes!!!  I'd put a mixtape just to expose you to some extra songs I have layin around or some extra verses that I never put to any of my own beats, I just think people need to watch it a little and not kill the idea, because it's a great idea, but even the best ideas can get run through the mud in no time.
