Today is a Great Day...Fable Has Shipped
« on: September 14, 2004, 01:53:00 PM »
Thats right, Fable shipped to stores today, and will be on shelves tomarrow (even tonight for some stores, like the one I'm getting it from).

I already have it preordered, and hopefully I can get it tonight.  Whether I get it or not, expect a full review from ME about the game shortly after.

i've been playing a little over an hour and all i can say so far that it starts off slow...voice acting, controls, graphics are all great...the narration is done in kind of a story book mode... as soon as i'm able to hack off a little kid's head and fart on his dead body...i'll post about the experience

i would like to say i got lucky, but the store i got it at had about 14-15 copies....no one here is really interested in the game

now on to my thoughts...i'm about 2 hours into the game. so far it's like a GTA/Zelda hybrid. while it shares some things in common with these games, it doesn't have the best parts of each, for example, GTA's free roaming and action, and zelda's problem solving.

i've been able to steal out of people's houses and vandalize things, that's nothing new in games...i have become evil enough to where i can flip the bird and air hump while spouting rude remarks, also my character has started to grow little horns and people are starting to be afraid of him. i've found a few haircut cards and styled my guy up a little so that he has this devilish goatee and a greased back ponytail....i find that it goes nice with the horns and the "dark traveller's" clothes i've stolen out of a house. my character also has a slight scar on his cheek from battling with town guards, which are too easily dispatched this early in the game

battle so far hasn't been anything difficult. i haven't needed any of the 60 something health cures and reive potions that i've accumulated thus far. really haven't used the ranged attack because the enemy tends to close the gap too fast to pull out my crossbow, load it, and pull it back far enough to do damage. the fighting seems alot like zelda...you lock onto someone with the trigger buttons then you have one attack and one dodge/block button.... if you attack enough without getting hit, your weapon glows and you get a more powerful attack.

the graphics are REALLY bright and colorful, i think even more so than a disney movie. townsfolk do tend to look the same, but this is the old days where they didn't have 10,000 different brands of shirts to buy. haven't ran into that many different creatures though, but what i have run into are varied. all the animations look nice. time changes, although i have yet to see any weather effects.

the advancement system works fine. after you beat an enemy (or little kid) they drop orbs....the longer you go without getting hit, the more orbs that drop when you kill an enemy. you have to go back to the guild to level up (which you can teleport to at any time) and you have about 9 different abilities to level up going from health, speed, accuracy....really haven't touched the magic system yet so i don't know what those abilities are

right now i give the game about an 8.0...there's alot of been there done that with a few new things added on...and the story so far seems rather generic

Oh man, I nearly had to pry myself away from the game to write this.

So far, I'm around 7.5-10 hours in the game, and man I love it.  Cartman was right in that it does start out slow...but then again most RPG's do.  I'm not gonna detail what happens in the first hour or so, I'm just gonna list what I do and do not like about Fable.

DO LIKE
1) Right from the beginning (maybe 45 min in), YOU control everything and anything about your character.  Clothes, tattoos, hair styles, facial hair, whether he uses strength (fighter), skill (stealth), or will (magic).

2) Doesn't "force" you to be any one character.  You don't have to be an all mage or all thief, but rather, you control exactly how you character is.  Right now, my character is a really strong, really jacked fighter, but he's also very good at stealth and he has some sweet magic attacks.

3) The NPCs!  I love the fact that there is no dialogue tree!  You simply use expressions and actions (unless it goes into a small cutscene) to communicate.  Also, they really do react to your appearance in a big way.  My guy has some really nice plate armor (which I stole, of course...its too damn expensive), and because of it all the women in town have hearts over their heads which says that they like me...they really like me!

4) There really isn't a limit to what you can do...honestly.  My character is married, we're renting out a house, and when I'm not doing quests I go fishing (which is a small, but very sweet detail they added in).  You can go into bars, get piss drunk (where the screen gets some weird, but very cool liquidy/hazy effect to it), play bar games, get married, have sex (I'm yet to do), and do one thing that is by far one of the coolest things I've seen on a console game...punt chickens.  Just go into a town and let a rip...its perfectly legal, the chickens make some funny noises, and its just fuckin funny seeing a chicken get punted.

5) Finally, the sheer fact that you do NOT have to follow the main quest...at all.  I recommend it, due to the fact that you get more money and some pretty sweet items, and the story line is very well done.  However, you don't have to do this.  As soon as you graduate from the guild (which is basically the training/tutorial aspect of the game), you're free to do whatever.  Go exploring, communicate with NPCs, punt chickens...its all up to YOU.

DO NOT LIKE (Not many, but a few)
1) Unlike many other RPG's, you don't have the ability to choose between a male or a female character...you have to be a male.  I'm usually males in games anyway (cuz I am one damnit), so this doesn't bother me that much...might bother others though.

2) If you want to level up high and become a super anti-son-of-a-bitch-machine, you really gotta play through the main quest.  In Fable, through fighting, you gain experience, which is then used to level up your character and make him better.  Soon after the first few levels, the cost of leveling up becomes very expensive (in experience), and the main quest offers MANY different occasions where you can get ALOT of experience...you don't see hardly any chances like that if your just Freelancing.

3) You can't jump...which at some times I find to be quite annoying.

I have not played many RPG's, but out of the titles I have played, I must say that so far, Fable is the best I've played.  Actually, I need to stop typing this so I can go play some more!

artemis - i'll admit that i wasn't real interested but it sounds pretty tight. Is it a lot like morrowind? i had to really force myself to stay on that game, and i eventually lost interest. this ones sounds promising though.

morrowind is alot better than this game

all the enemies i've encountered have been nice, bright and colorful...not one have looked menacing...i've seen more threatening monsters in Kingdom Hearts ....and about 6 hours into it and they've already done the "change color of monster = totally new monster" trick a few times

the fighting gets REAL boring quick and it's too easy it almost feels like the character can't die with all the potions and food you find

dealing with people using just suggestions is gay. how can you involve yourself in a world where you can't talk? you just flip people, fart and air hump in their direction (well that's all i can do since i'm evil)

i go and kill a guard in a town of about 10 people....all of a sudden there's an endless supply of guards coming at me....

the map is made up of dozens of small chunks about 1/100 the size of a halo level, to get between these "rooms", as i can best describe them, you'll have to endure about 15 seconds of loading. and believe me these rooms are small which equals constant loading

the camera makes it almost impossible to have a thief character...you can often steal while indoors....but stealing outdoors is near impossible

so far the only thing positive and different about this game is the character customization...but so far i really haven't gotten to a point where i want to change my character again and it's been that way for the last 4 hours...

this is FAR from a perfect game...it's even FAR away from what they promised it would be...RPG wise this game is average... overall game wise, this has all been there, done that

just because i bought it is the only reason i'm still playing it, this game is a HUGE let down

i'm giving this game a 7.0 unless it makes some huge turn around

i agree with the things cartman has said... but i'd give it an 8 just because it tries to do something different than everything else out there.  very nice effort but it comes up flat in a lot of areas.
