It's Official - Roy Jones Jr. is a Has-Been
« on: September 25, 2004, 09:08:06 PM »
I've been tellin y'all this forever, this cat has built his career off of his big mouth and by fighting C-class fighters.

He got knocked out again by Glenn Johnson. The poor fool was laid out motionless.

He's only 35 so he should have a few years left in him, but I think the Tarver fight devastated him so bad mentally, that he's scared to take chances again.

It's time to make rapping your day job Jones.

I just saw it. Man he got fucked up. It was more so the canvas than the punch but the punch was strong too. Well it's about time people saw this guy eat his words. This was supposed to be a warm up fight for Jones/Tarver 3 but it looks like it's gonna be Johnson/Tarver instead. That should be a good fight.

In other news, I heard Foreman wants to come back again. At 55 it should be interesting. If he wins a title at this age then he should go down in history as the greatest ever.

fuck roy jones i'm glad he got knocked!

and about Foreman....he's already the greatest IMO . I think he could've beat Ali in rumble in the jungle if Ali didn't play possum for most of the fight, smart move by Ali , making foreman tired, but if they were to throw down for reals ....GEORGE!

To be honest, I always thought the fight was fixed. Whether it was by doping, a pay off to George, or his corner (for not telling him to stop wasting punches). I mean it was a huge upset and there was no rematch. If Foreman won that fight, it would have been over for making money in boxing. Big George had already beaten everybody, and he was sen as a bad guy. The smart move was to make Ali champ and promote the sport. That is why I thought it was fixed.

Ali is only the greatest ever to those that don't remember anything before the 60s. The greatest ever for me is between Louis (Joe) or the Rock. But if Foreman comes back at this age and does it again then I'll place him above those two.

^yeah i honestly don't see why Ali is seen as the greatest either....i mean i've seen some of his fights and it's like what's the big deal. I agree about Joe Louis too dude was  a bad ass. BUt yeah i wish foreman would come back and win the title that would rule more than his little grills.

On the Roy subject, I guess it's a career. Most fighters don't last past 35 anyways, except the ones that end up in wheelchairs and eat throw a straw. I think honestly 32 is the usual cut off age for a great figher. Hopkins is an exception, mainly because he started his career later than most, he started boxing at the age of 22, well most boxers start as teenagers. But Jones Jr. beat Hopkins and James Toney, and has outclassed every ranked challenger before him, beat Johnny Ruiz to claim a piece of the heavyweight title. I think he has proven his skills. Honestly, like Hopkins, there was no one to fight in his division for years. He beat every middleweight, and moved up from there. The Cruiserweight division is even weaker than Light Heavyweight, and Middleweight was lacking until the Welterweights like Oscar and Tito moved up. But aside from Tito and Oscar, two true Welterweights, Hopkins had no one to fight. Same with Roy. They dominated in an era with no to beat. But Roy had a great career, beat the only two people of his era worth beating, Hopkins and Toney, then beat a heavyweight, if Roy decided to call it a career, it will be remembered as a great career. Then there is always people that hate no matter what, but that's with everyone. Hell, people don't think Ali is the greatest... lol.

Now on Ali. I always put Joe Louis right behind Ali. Big George I think was the most powerful man in boxing history, any division, pound for pound, whatever you want to judge. Louis though was just flat out great. But he was like Jones Jr. and Hopkins, he dominated in a time when he was the division. After he beat the German, there was no one to beat, he just dominated. Power, George, fighter, Louis, but speed and brains, there is only Ali. He was so fast, and he had a different style for every fighter once he got older and slower. When he was young, he was just so fast that no one could hit him. Against any other heavyweight, he would beat them. Tyson was the most physically gifted boxer ever, but Ali was just the greatest, he was too smart. There was no fixed fights, in fact Don King and everyone else had their money on Ali. After the lost George Foreman went into depression, and was eventually saved by God. But he dissappeared for a while after that, and lost the fight right after the Rumble. I doubt it was a fix. Ali was just too smart. Rocky, he was good too, but he could never match Ali's speed. He was tougher than nails, and he could take a punch, but Ali would beat him by points. But there's haters that will always say someone is better, so, whatever.

and i agree wit whomever said big george is the greatest... he woulda sat ali on the sidelines way be4 larry holmes did if ali wasnt runnin so much, my uncle useta say foreman could knock a hippotamus out..

that ali foreman fight wasnt fix...everbody around ali was scared.....of how he was gone take a shot from george..they played it safe..then george caught him 1 good time..he rocked ali..he went to his corner hurtin.. he was like fuck that shit.. and thats when he started runnin...and george got tired...

and everything i have seen of ali was him runnin, in all of ali's fights against, frazier, holmes, and foreman..u can tell when they hurt him..and his corner told him to start runnin.. once u hit ali wit a good shot..u knew it..kuz he will run..

Here's Jones out on the floor.

Like shallow said, he got more messed up from his head hittin the canvas than the actual shot. He may possibly have suffered a concussion as well. Johnson wasn't even a big hitter. I honestly think Jones gameplan was to let Johnson tire out and take him out from there. Too bad Johnson had way too much stamina than anyone expected. This has definitely been a good two weeks when it comes to the boxing world and we still got the Tito fight comin' up.

As for Ali, Ali was definitely a runner. I think alot of his popularity or his perception of being so great was from his mouth, similar to Roy Jones in his prime.

What are U on
Ali took Big Georges punches sometimes flush on the chin.
So dont give me that 'If they went toe 2 toe'
Ali won fair and square Get over it.

As 4 Roy Jones
The guy has never bin a light Heavyweight. Seems that he just stays at that weight because he is to lazy to keep at super middle.
I dont agree that he has not fought anyone.
Hopkins, Toney, Mcallum all good fighters and Roy beat them easily.

Ali may have beaten Rock on points, but there is no garauntee it would go that long. If it were a 24 rounder than no way will Ali last that long.

As for Foreman; there was no rematch because there is no way Foreman would have lost again. What ever the reason may be. Foreman was fighting during Ali's reign. He had a great fight with Ron Lyle, which Foreman won by KO, and then Foreman fought Frazier again and KO'ed him in 5 rounds. Foreman was there from '74-'77 but there was no rematch. Like I said, boxing is a business and money comes first. Fights get fixed and that's the way it is. Look at Leonard/Duran II, anybody who thinks that wasn't fixed is a complete idiot. I'm not sure what went down at Foreman/Ali, but all I know was that was not the same George Foreman I saw against Frazier and Norton, and it had nothing to do with rope a dope. He was different in the first two rounds, way before he could have gotten tired. George Foreman hiself could tell me it was legeit and I'll think he's lying. Unles maybe that African curse the tribesman put on him was real. Of course I find it amusing that Ali was the huge underdog in the gambling Vegas but foir some reason a handfull of "visionary" boxing fans felt that Ali would win and bet hundreds of thousands on him, while everyone else bet on Foreman.

If Ali is the greastest boxer of all time, then Elvis Presley invented Rock n Roll. Don't let the media hype dupe you.

Oscar isn't done. No one expected him to beat Hopkins. There are still a few more big money fights left for De La Hoya. Jones is out of possibilities.
