naw hell no he wasn't man.  I started getting into rap in 93.  Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer were already both huge rap stars waaaaaaaay before snoop dogg.

These are the rappers who got me into rap before I can ever remember hearing snoop dogg:

cypress hill
onxy
naughty by nature
public enemy
2pac

many rappers were big before snoop dogg.  dr. dre and snoop dogg could arguably be the first huge and successful rap stars that really brought gangsta rap to the mainstream.  but then you argue that up against NWA, and imo, NWA wins that one.

First off, I know Dana Dane and Slick Rick. But their impact wasn't mainstream.

Snoop took 'Snoop Dogg' , 'Snoopafella' from Dana
Snoop took 'Lodi Dodi' , 'G Bedtime Stories' from Slick

oh, and teenage love by slick, is a classic...

I'm talking Rap Star, not Rappers

look, you guys seem to think I was born in 1992, in Snoop's bed. I was born in 1982 and grew up listening to a lot of music. Whether it's Naughty By Nature in their OPP days, ONYX in their Slam Days or Tupac in his Brenda's got a baby day... Snoop was the first rap star...2 cents

I would say Run DMC were raps' first superstars. Their Raising Hell album sold 3 million copies in '86/'87 and they had an international tour. That was unheard of in those days when it came to rap music. They were the first rap act to ever have a video on MTV with "Rock Box". I think they were the first rappers to have major corporate endorsement deals too cause if Kurtis Blow had a deal with Sprite I'm sure the biggest rap act at the time had something too.

I'd like to see what do you say to explain why LL Cool J wasn't a mainstream rap star.

In terms of worldwide impact, media attention, controversey and critical praise, Snoop was raps first superstar. When Doggystyle came out Snoop blew up everywhere, not just North America but the world, he broke records in the music industry. I remember when he first came over to the Europe he was all over television and publications unlike any other rapper before him. He was literally the poster boy for rap music at the time and his music, style and attitude couldn't be fucked with. Between 93-95 Snoop was as good as a household name worldwide. Run DMC had superstar staus but not to the point where their debut albums first week sales have only been topped 10 years later.

BPG - Your problem is, when you say "I was around before Snoop!" you list Onyx, Naughty By Nature, and Tupac, which were all what, 91, 92, 93? Man, you're not even out of the fucking 90'S!

To say Snoop was rap's first rap star is a statement that says you are on Snoop's nuts because if you have a little bit of hip-hop historian in you like I do I thought ya would have said Run DMC and LL Cool J were rap's first big stars

Just to give BPG the benefit of the doubt, though, I think it could be argued that Snoop was the BIGGEST Rap star when he came out, bigger than everybody before.  He was no where near the first, though.  I think the first Rap stars I was into were the Fat Boys, LOL.  They weren't huge stars (err... well, yeah, they were physically huge) but there were tons of rappers who were mainstream superstars way before Snoop.  Even DRE was around before Snoop, I mean comeon.  There was a time, believe it or not BPG, when Snoop was Dre's backup, lol, Dre was the show.  Cube was even blown up before Snoop came along, Eazy, LL, Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick, Run DMC, etc. etc etc
