I cant believe hammers name has'nt found its way to this thread....not only was hammer raps first superstar hip hop soloist.....but he was a west coast artist and his first cd was full of bay area influence(feel my power). He had it goin on yall....he had endorsements from pepsi...kfc....british knights....movie sound tracks, dude was on oprah and hosting snl
and all types of shit....I recognize hammer before any other(solo) artist when it comes to bringing hip hop to the masses...
run dmc was the first group to do this

Yeah I have to say Def Jam was big in the ol' days.

Run DMC - no doubt in my mind....I always felt they really brought rap to the mainstream
LL Cool J
Beastie Boys
Fat Boys
Public Enemy

Don't get me wrong, there were a lot of good rappers/groups then but I felt these guys started bringing rap to the main stream...

If I asked a non hip-hop fan to name a Run DMC song, they will probably say "Walk This Way" but for Snoop, my guess is that they won't name a Doggystyle track...I guess they will say "Beautiful or Drop it Like Its Hot"....but that's just my opinion...

BPG - Your problem is, when you say "I was around before Snoop!" you list Onyx, Naughty By Nature, and Tupac, which were all what, 91, 92, 93? Man, you're not even out of the fucking 90'S!

First off, the only reason I mentioned those artists were because Acgrundy said they were rapstars before Snoop... I was giving my answer back to him. I was born in 1982, so I was 10 when Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle came out. But my days of rap music began when I was 8. My neighbor, who was a big hip hop head, gave me a Fresh Prince album, which featured one of my favorite songs 'Nightmare on Elm Street' ... in fact almost everyday I was down in her basement listening to music that she liked, such as Run DMC, Beastie Boys... 'whatcha whatcha whatcha want' ... Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J with his love anthems and his Mama gonna knock you out. We listened to Pharcyde and Digital Underground, De La Soul, The Tribe, Marley Marl, Joe Fatal, Kool G Rap, Biz Marike, Big Daddy Kane and tons of other artists... the fact is...I'M NOT STUCK IN THE 90's.. at my age, my focus was not on rap, but trust me, I've listened and try to know as much hip hop as possible. Whether it's Nelly or Helta Skeltah, Trick Daddy or Gang Starr, 50 Cent or Fu-Schnickens, I think I know what I'm talking about that you know what I'm talking about. I still hold my opinion.

If you asked any average music listener to name one rapper....I can guarantee you Snoop Dogg would be a prominate answer... and that's because he was the first Star of rap... He was above rap... was not in it... and that's not me riding his nuts, that's me examining what hip hop was before he arrived and how it's changed since his arrival.

All the rappers you guys name, with respect to your replys, were not HUGE... a star step's aside from their entertainment and embody what it is at the moment.

A Movie Star is Tom Cruise, an actor is Tom Hanks ... the difference being... Tom Cruise stood out at one time. Tom Hanks is an excellent actor, but a star? You ask anyone to name an actor I guarantee you, more people will say Tom Cruise over Tom Hanks...yet they both broke into the industry around the same time.

A Rock Star Is Kiss...A Musician is Santana... my 2 cents

I still hold my opinion.

Your opinion is wrong.

Herb Quote Of The Year[/u]

CalebOhio: I think i can speak for many others when i say my favorite rap artists are white but i still want black artists to be dope. they are chosing not to be. that wouldn't be a likely believe held in a white supremacist group. I want Nas to deliver evertime but he doesn't every time Sage does. so Sage gets my $15 regardless or his status. fuck your status perception and labels you use.

BPG, AGAIN, you missed the point.

You said Snoop was rap's first star, then you said you were 10 when Doggystyle came out, but that you started listening when you were 8.  BIG FUCKING DEAL, you still started listening in the NINETIES.  You're ignorant enough to think anything outside the scope of your existance is irrelevant.  Rap was here before you were, you have to imagine that, and imagine that even though you weren't around to see it, there actually WERE superstars before Snoop.

I mean, come on man.  You're being pretty fuckin' arrogant to try and act like nobody before you started listening was important.  Also, how the fuck would you know? You weren't even listening then!

^ I'm a huge fan too! ... but no matter how much you like somebody, you can't make them first if they weren't first.  Like I said, you could argue he was the biggest, but not the first.
