As for the subject of this thread... Yes, I think some people might find it cool just to hate on anything that gets overly popular, and I might as well find myself doing it too sometimes (hey, after all your favorite artist is a lot more special and a lot more 'yours' when they're still underground).

As for the hand of time... I still think 1993-1996 was the golden era of hiphop and I listen to full albums from that era on a daily basis. Hiphop will probably never get that good again, but I hope I'm wrong about that. After 1996 it's all been going downwards with a few good albums and only few artists really shining to me. I'm not trying to automatically hate on anything that has come out recently. 50 Cent used to be a really good rapper back when he was doing this mixtape thing with G-Unit and on his unofficial debut "Power of the dollar" he really seemed to be shining to me, along with his peoples. Then came the fame... GRODT was quite a good album, but now the boy seems like he has totally ran out of topics so it's all money, cars and ho's now. I don't know about you guys, but topics like that really don't touch me. It might seem cool to hate on popular rappers like that, but at the end of the day, those opinions are true. We're lovers of a great genre of music, but hiphop is really bringing itself down when that's all the mainstream gets to hear.

Then again, I'm trying to keep my mind open to anything that comes out. After all, Disco inferno is a hot joint to me, and Candy shop is one of the best hiphop cuts for the clubs to me. It just grew on me. That's one major change we've had in the past so-many years - hiphop is a lot more commercial now, which also means it's getting played a lot more in mainstream clubs. That's definately a positive thing to me, since there's no underground hiphop clubs in my area. They're even showing respect to the greater club joints of the '90s. I can't hate on that - thank God we got rid of all this sucky dance music so now we can enjoy our favorite genre a bit more in public. (don't get me wrong, I'm not saying dance music sucks, there's enough good dance music out there but it just never seemed to be getting airplay like some hiphop does nowadays).

I'm just saying, hiphop getting more commericalized isn't all bad. Yeah, I hate most of the southern hiphop too (it almost hurts calling that hiphop) but it's not all that bad, there's some good artists coming from there too. Just keep your ears open for them. Right about now, I'm just waiting for Kanye's next album, to see if he can keep his trend of consciousness up... And then we'll have to see if Detox is going to change the game like The Chronic and 2001 did. It probably will, so let's not lose our faith yet.

Here's my take i think that in some ways it makes sense to say you love rap but hate hip hop right now but i am not 1 of the people thats saying that. there are plenty of rappers i love and plenty that i hate, the ones i hate i ignore and its that simple.

I'm not naive i realize that 50cent,eminem,and nelly rule the rap game but i am not a fan of anything they put out so i dont listen to anything they do.

i am a rap fan but i only listen to westcoast because no one on the east has ever grabbed my attention.

i thinkthe future of the west will be fine although the sales will never be there again alot of the vets from the west still have shit poppin and our future doesnt look that bad either, (crooked i,roscoe, game, balance)

there are plenty of rappers i hate way more than i like but i choose to ignore them so its no big deal.

And I think that you just made a real key point there. The West is gonna be alright. We got some cats from the L.A. 2 the Bay that are more lyrically sound than anyone  I have heard from in a Long Long time. We are at the threshold. Remember when we last dominated this industry it was a lot like this, everybody saying the same thing...Then BOOM the West Coast Invasion came in.

History will repeat itself, it always does.

well i love your optimism and i certainly hope so but im not sure.  i meen back when the west had shit locked snoop, daz, kurupt, dre, and 2pac were on death row and thats a big reason why we were so hot.

now i think that the future of westcoast music will be great sounding but im not sure it will have great sales behind it, but thats fine unlike alot of poeple i judge my rappers on skillz and not album sales

We will. Now there is only one 2Pac period. But just like in B-ball there is only one Dr. Jay and then BOOM Jordon arrives years later . We will there are some fresh voices out there, you gotta dig to hear them but they are there. Maybe if we tell the world F-U then it will happen. Langsotn Hughes said the prequisite for writing is first having something to say and I think that we have alot to say. West West Ya'll.

You can hate hip-hop all you want. Once you truly love it, you can never hate it. So those that hate hip-hop, they never loved it to begin with.

That's real talk.

I think those who say that hiphop is wack and boring, is watching too much MTV or listening to the radio.
I turn off the radio every time I hear Nelly, Chingy, J Kwon, Bow Wow, Ja Rule or any other kid/gimmick rapper trying to cash in on hiphop by singing the verses and having singers doing 80% of the actual performing.. even the boybands are adding socalled "rappers" to their tracks, no wonder it's watered down.

Man to this day I love Hip Hop to death.  Its like a medicine for me for whatever mood I'm in. Like Grundy said I can listen to songs 20 times in a row and not be bored. I agree todays quality has dropped cause theres so much BS coming out but there is so much more to chose from its crazy. Like I discover new shit everyday that keeps me happy for the rest of my life.
