The 1930s Scarface is based on the era of the 20s and 30s.  During the prohibition and so on, it is not based on Al Capone.  It wasnt until the late 50s,60s and 80s where movies based on Al capone came out.  Just like the original scarface, the latest scarface is just based on an era of crime.  Thats the only thing those two movies have in common really, that is based on an era of crime.  All the credit for Scarface should be given to Oliver stone who wrote those lines and Pacino who said them

Scarface may not be based on a true story but i guarentee you its based on true events. This shit depicts the american dream from a poor immigrants prespective. Ive seen both movies and i dont place goodfellas even close to scarface.

Scarface IS based on true events... the original scarface from 1937 i belive was the year is based on none other than Al Capone's life, and Scarface from 83 is a remake.. however, Scarface from 83 has nothin in common with al capone

Ive read some books aswell and what said was that the Scarface movie from the 30's is based on al capones life, its far from a biography and very far from al capones real life, but its based and influenced by him... al capone was known as Tony "Scarface" Capone, wich was one of his "nicknames",

however.. this has very little with the movie itself to do

After there is a list of dope ass gangster movies such as goodfellas, casino, donnie brasco, once upon a time in america, king of new york, deep cover, etc., but they don't come close to the masterpieces that Godfather I&II and Scarface are. As far as the goodfellas vs. scarface goes; goodfellas was a real good movie. It definitely was a lot more believable and showed a real close up look inside the mob, but I don't know. For some reason I just don't see it up there with scarface. Now I think about it goodfellas would probably make number three on my list.
