Safe + Sound - 10 year anniverssary appreciation thread...
« on: February 20, 2005, 02:26:50 PM »
DJ Quik released this album 10 years ago from this day. "Safe + Sound" is a Quik Classic and has the Classic song and arguably the best diss song ever recorded, 'Dollaz + Sense'. This song ripped MC eiht apart with Quiks Clever lines and is a classic example of someone getting clowned. On this album Quik experminted with P-Funk and the Talk Box. This album is Quiks most lyrical and gangsta album and was Exectively produced by Suge Knight CEO of Death Row Records. To me this is quiks second best album behind Rythm-al-ism and is one of my top favorite albums ever.

Best songs are:

1. Dollaz + Sense
2. Safe & Sound
3. Something 4 tha Mood
4. Diggin U out
5. Summer Breeze

overall a 5/5 album...Classic

'Dollaz + Sense' was the first Quik song I heard and Safe + Sound was the first Quik album I bought.

I've been a fan ever since. Today I consider Quik my favourite artist bar none - this is the album that started it, so it's an undisputed classic to me.

It's got everything you want from a rap album - it's hard in places, smooth in others. There are gangsta tracks, party tracks, songs you can chill to, songs you can play with your girl... it covers hip-hop, funk, soul, jazz... it's perfect IMO.

my favorite quik album. when i interviewed quik earlier in december, i had him autograph this poster, and he was hella tripped out. he dont even remember this picture or the pose, cos it wasnt even in the booklet or nothing, plus the fact that it was a promo poster from ten years ago. when he saw like the P on his hat, and all the red, he was like "damn i used to be such a gangsta".  i could tell that he wanted to keep it, but anyways on the poster he signed "4 justin... stay fonky... dj quik compton, calif"

I downloaded this the other day....

I dunno why, i really wanted to like this album, i dont NOT like it, i've heard it briefly for about 10 mins skipping through tracks..

Its not that its older rap, i love Gang Starr stuff...

Just not feeling it right now, hoping it might grow on me though...

I'm not hating on this CD btw.

Gang Starr

"But they can't take the respect, that I've earned in my lifetime
And you know they'll never stop the furious force of my rhymes
So like they say, every dog has it's day
And like they say, God works in a mysterious way
So I pray, remembering the days of my youth
As I prepare to meet my moment of truth"

This album is amazing, Quik is definetly one of my favourite artists, any genre.

Most hip-hop is now keyboard driven, because the majority of hip-hop workstations have loops and patches that enable somebody with marginal skills to put tracks together,...

Unfortunately, most hip-hop artists gravitated towards the path of least resistance by relying on these pre-set patches. As a result, electric guitar and real musicians became devalued, and a lot of hip-hop now sounds the same.
