Everything is derivitive.  A lotta the stuff in hiphop dates back to disco, and funk, and alot of hiphop/disco/funk traces to the beatles, and a lot of the beatles traces to motown R&B, Motown R&B traces to blues and jazz, that traces back to slave music, that traces back to folk music, that traces back to friekin' gregorian chants, which traces back to Monks, which traces back to god.  MUSIC IS GOD!!! I mean, African American people aint got much they can call their own, not even their last names or their religions. But then there's Hip Hop which was no doubt started by the African American Culture, or an Urban Culture, and I guess it just bothers some people when you try to take that away.



Now maybe you got a point. It was a white man who started making weird noises with his turn tables. But that's probably all it was.... weird noises. That's not what hip hop is... there's a whole techneic when it comes down to DJing, a rhythm, a pattern. All that white guy was doing was weird noises... most likely he was a nerdy white guy who was sitting at home messin around with his turn tables... But he didnt start hip hop at all....

Ok heres my thoughts

You cant give one person credit for starting a whole kind of music, That is simply imposible. No one will ever know for sure because hip hop is a part of so many things. So this guy claims he invented the scratch, well for all we know people could of been scratching records 10 years before this guy did it. Kids could have been in they're bassments rapping and scratching and breakdancing way before it all got famous. If you wanna talk on who made it popular then thats a whole different story. If im not mistaken rap stands for Rhythem and Poetry. I might be wrong but ive been told thats what it stands for. But even if thats not what it stands for we all know poetry is a big part of rap, poetry is rap. The whole point of rap music is poetry over a beat. So who invented poetry? That might be the person that started hip hop. But how would we ever know who wrote the first poem. That goes back centuries. And no we will never know for sure.

Now_I_Know, your whole argument is that "VH1 said it so its right." Which is stupid because the people behind VH1 are humans just like us who can read millions of books, do hours of reasearch but can't go  back in time and actully see the birth of hip hop. They cant acctully prove the day it started or how it started. Some 50 year old guy could of just came the the VH1 studios and said "Hey I invented hip hop, do a story on me" They could make up any bullshit and everyone would believe it because its on TV. I dont believe it a tiny bit. Not because the guys white but because VH1 should know better than to give one guy credit for starting a whole type of music.
