The Greatest 50 Hip-hop Albums Ever - #46...

Redman - Whut? Thee Album (1992)

Redman was probably the only MC in the 1990s to stay very sharp from beginning (EPMD’s “Hardcore” & “Brothers On My Jock”) to end (Redman & Method Man’s Blackout!).  The very anticipated Whut? Thee Album was released in 1992 to excellent reviews.  Erick Sermon (along with Redman) produced the entire album and it definitely had that EPMD feel to it. Redman's subject matter centers around his love of funk and his equal love of pot, with some sex and violence thrown in for good measure.
The album starts off with the one of the most hardcore shit Redman has ever done. "Time 4 Sum Aksion" has a thumping drum beat and a deadly Cypress Hill sample. Redman comes off rough as hell! Couldn't have started an album off better. But Redman really starts the funk with "So Ruff." The sampled "Flashlight" beat is funky as fuck and Redman kicks a storytelling rap about AIDS... but with a sense of humor.  The Pete Rock co-produced "How To Roll A Blunt" is funny as hell, but is also a genuinely useful instructional track. He closes the album up with series starter "A Day Of Soopaman Lover" as Redman flexes his storytelling skills again.  Redman had to fill the void that EPMD left providing some upbeat funky hip-hop.  Raw rhymes and funky beats have never met a better match.

I always thought this was one of Reggie's weaker albums. Dare Iz A Darkside tore this album a new asshole IMO.

I wonder if Muddy Waters is in this list as well - I like that one better than Whut¿ but they're all great albums

Props once again, nice picking... My cd collection is pretty much complete as well, so it seems   8)
