Producers who create a "New West" sound?
« on: December 16, 2005, 10:04:24 AM »
I think we all know that the West Coast should try to develop a new sound in order to gain more exposure. Sure, the G-Funk sound from the 90's is still cool to me, but from what I know it simply doesn't do the trick anymore for non-West Coast fans.
With that said, which producers do you think that come with some sort of "New West" sound? Meaning: still a West Coast beat but with a different vibe on it (other instruments, new sounds, etc...) than in the 90's?

Personally, I think that DJ Khalil manages to come with a New West sound. All of his beats definitely have a West Coast feel to it, but it's something new compared to the 90-era of West Coast Hip-Hop.

Also, J. Wells has a nice sound. His album Digital Master is proof of that (especially the song "One Shot Kill" by Jayo Felony...hotdayum, that beat is tight!)

Besides these 2, I'd say that Rush (the guy who produces most of The Relativez material) has some sort of New West sound in his beats.
J Steez on the otherhand is an extremely good producer but he doesn't always come with a "refreshing" sound. Most of his beats remind me of Battlecat, Quik or Warren G. So that's good in the sense that he makes quality beats, but it's negative in the sense that he doesn't always bring something fresh & new to the table (and I'd like to stress the words "not always", because I DO know that he sometimes laces up very creative beats)

The funny thing about making "new west" sounds is that lot of producers try so hard to make it sound good but it comes out wack.
I believe we need something that nobody ever heard before.  It shouldn't be limited to something g-funk or oldies sounded...or anything shit like that.  I don't believe the west really have any producers or talents that could bring something fresh or different.  I think believe (speaking for myself) west should explore life more, as in culture-wise.  I believe lyrics are important as sounds.  From basing my opinion...i don't believe west will ever be alive again until west's mentally of music changes to something else.  And from that...it won't happen.

This thread definitely reminds me of:

http://www.dubcnn.com/connect/index.php?topic=89225.msg937498#msg937498

I have been sayin for a while that the west does need a bit of a new sound. That is one thing I am slowly trying to evolve into when I produce, because the 90s sound was dope, but nothin that comes out now soundin like it is gonna catch too many ears outside the west. I also said that the east, south, and midwest sound A LOT different from how they did in the 90s, even in 99, so the west needs to evolve the same way.

Give it some time...as far as LA goes, I know a lot of producers, whether it's established, somewhat established, or still unknown, and many of them have a different sound. Thing I notice is that there are some who sound like they are straight from the 90s and have that sound that is 100% west coast.....OR, they sound like they are from nowhere on the west, and their style is heavily sample based, or either sounds similar to the south. There are some who do have a different type of sound that you would still say is west coast, but most of them are either on one side or another, just like many rappers. Most younger rappers in LA sound a lot more East Coast than west, and then there are older cats who sound TOO west coast and sound straight from the 90s.

Now that's just me speakin for LA....I think the Bay music that's out now could definitely catch on and have appeal outside the west. There are some songs people in the south love that never even hit radio, and I heard they try to do the Bay dances in Miami.

Right now, as far as Producers who are making an impact, Khalil has a different sound. He sounds more like Muggs, Rza, Premier... More so than your typical George-Clinton-Biting-G-Funked-Out West Coast Producers. There's very few Producers out West that actually have a versatile sound, Khalil is one of em.

I think Jim Gettum is doing great things over at Dynasty. The combination of Gettum & Crooked I is consistent. I would maybe like to see Gettum work with artists outside of Dynasty to see what else he can achieve.

Well, you see...I'ma producer/composer.  From what you say, you could be right.  BUt...when you mentioned older producers bringing that 100 percent west coast would actually support my concept.  Even the ones that sounded like east coast.  Why?  It's because what i"m saying is that they don't bring up their own original concept of music.  I'm mean Cali is known to bring out gangsta music.  THat's pretty much all we know as west coasters.  These days they usually take ideas from others (normally).  I'm not saying that I know music, but as a listerner (and I'm in cali), it wouldn't have any impact on me.  I mean...i admit that lil joh had that crunk thing..and had to admit that it was different for a while.  IT sucks now(speaking for myself again or my opinion) because it is the same stuff.  It's cool to like something like that maybe because they like to be entertained.  However, when you want something meaningful, you need originality.  I bet most of the producers don't even know how to compose.  I love melody and i think west needs melody instead of "4 by 4 same noted and repeativitve (wrong spelling)" music.

Yes, Cali was known for the Gangsta sound, but that doesn't mean that's all we had. Cypress Hill, Pharcyde, Hiero, Tha Liks, Xzibit, etc. never had that Gangsta style, they always had a different vibe. I refuse to say that because we're used to a Gangsta sound that we should stay the same way. No... It's time to move on. Look at the East Coast, they're not on some Boom Bap shit, so why is the West still hung up on this Gangsta shit? Get over it already. The South-East (Atlanta, Miami) ain't putting out Bass/Booty music no more, they stepped it up with Crunk. Look at Texas, they're not putting out the laid back funk shit they were doing back in the day, they've changed their whole sound. The West, and it's fans, are the only ones that are not willing to let go.
