For the AHH 2005 round-up, I voted for Khalil as producer of the year - stating that if he wasn't necessarily the best, then he was surely the most improved for the way he has expanded his sound in the past year. What was cool was that I got some feedback from some of the senior writers saying that they agreed with a lot of my choices for the categories. I really hope Khalil gets the accolade, and if not that then at least an honourable mention. His sound is refreshing, and, as I pointed out with my vote, he's worked with household names like X and G-Unit, to the West Coast underground's finest in Chace and Phil. 2006 could be his year...

Yes, Cali was known for the Gangsta sound, but that doesn't mean that's all we had. Cypress Hill, Pharcyde, Hiero, Tha Liks, Xzibit, etc. never had that Gangsta style, they always had a different vibe. I refuse to say that because we're used to a Gangsta sound that we should stay the same way. No... It's time to move on. Look at the East Coast, they're not on some Boom Bap shit, so why is the West still hung up on this Gangsta shit? Get over it already. The South-East (Atlanta, Miami) ain't putting out Bass/Booty music no more, they stepped it up with Crunk. Look at Texas, they're not putting out the laid back funk shit they were doing back in the day, they've changed their whole sound. The West, and it's fans, are the only ones that are not willing to let go.

cali most definitely need to change their style.  OR safe to say..no more gangsta shit.  I love em..it died...and now we had to say good bye and bury to the grave. hahah..man..i love gangsta shit..but ya know...music won't last unless it's truely meaningful.

hopefully the new west coast sound as far as beats goes will be along the lines of Soo Whoop Gangsta. that beat has a lil touch of the old west but it still sounds new and fresh.

Quik's Trauma album is slept on, as far as I'm concerned. There were beats on that CD that are among the most advanced I've heard in years.

Thats because they all ACT gangsta, but they aren't! They dress like they are tryin to be fashionable, and not just dressin to look good. ACTIN gangsta, but not rappin gangsta! Just like the WESTSIDE CONNECTION song "Rappers in Love". There are too many rappers with gay ass shit!
Now lets keep it "GANGSTA" like Eazy and N.W.A!

As for new style West producers, I think BIGSTUFF is really good. I know none of you guys have heard of him, BUT he's worked with Ice-T, Mac Mall, Luniz, B-Legit, Kurupt, VicVodka, PDS, Brown-N-Proud, and some others I can't remember.
He may not be THE ONE to change the style of the West, but he's definitley DOPE!

I'm feeling Dem Jointz' sound as well. Also Dae One has some tight beats...
DJ Slip had something nice going on with IV Life, but I guess that's history now.

hopefully the new west coast sound as far as beats goes will be along the lines of Soo Whoop Gangsta. that beat has a lil touch of the old west but it still sounds new and fresh.

Yeah...Rush produced that one. That's indeed a banging beat...so are the others songs on on the last Relativez album.
