this may will offend most quik fans (and i´m one)
but i dont think that quik ist that much of a genius,
the thing is, hip hop is a very simple art (prdocuing, ivolves no really instruments etc)
quik may be a dope RAPprdocuer, but as a musician he is a 5/10
if you listen to REAL music, u will know what i mean, and even in hip hop there are people who maybe are morge gifted when it comes to beats and instruments etc like ryan leslie or raphaeld saadiq..
nowdays just because u can play a little instrument, a few accords on a piano/guitar doestn make u a genius,
most qui fans are so impressed by the quik grooves, yeah for a hiphop artits, pretty mellew, if you listen to real jazz/blues, nothing special
so he is maybe DJ QUIK America'z Most Complete (RAP) Artist producer (maybe in the top 5)
what you think..

Take that bit in bold, walk away and consider how long Quiks been producing then come back, look at the bit in the bold again and listen to some of his compositions.
Whilst brotherman isn't Mozart by a long shot he sure ain't Swizz Beats.

Quik's genius isn't really about being a sole jazz musician or to be compared to them, but his genius is on combining key elements of Jazz and soul and incorporating them into a genre that isn't necessarily associated with those styles of music and making it sound cool, funky and legitimate, enjoyed by your average rap fan - Introducing a wider musical taste to an average fan if you like. Red rags, people who wouldn't be caught dead at a jazz concert, bumping Quiks groove 3 is proof of that
-
you'd better prepare for Mr. Theo's wrath, lmao.
it's not like quik is the only dude in rap to incorporate jazz elements in his compositions though. i was listening to Master P & UGK's Break Em Off (produced by Pimp C & Mo B. Dick) in my ride the other day, shit sounded mad jazzy and yet hardcore and gangsta. classic song. JT The Bigga Figga's Dwellin' In Tha Labb album sounds mad jazzy too. that doesn't make Quik a genius, rather a cultured producer.
the word genius is used and abused, the term means nothing nowadays, just like the terms "classic", and "legend".
Quik gets my full respect and admiration though, but a genius ? I don't know, it needs to be debated.
-
I think DJ Quik was more dedicated to it though for it to become his signature sound...... There "used" to be a time when we would see "produced by DJ Quik" and kind of have an idea of what to expect..... Now, we don't know what outer space shit we'll get
-
"He's not much of a genius"? So what is he? Half genius? 3/4 Genius? Medium Genius? Small Genius?
-
no need to apologise...its pinions. we all hear or do not hear different things.
-
So who do you consider a genius in the rap game and what do you consider REAL music, The Truth Hug?

well he mentioned ryan leslie & raphael saadiq as examples of people who are 'maybe' more talented at producing. i'd say that's highly debatable, i mean ryan leslie is great but his sounds don't have much warmth. i much prefer what somebody like dre or quik is doing with sound over ryan leslie. and that's from someone who really likes ryan leslie. raphael saadiq collab'd with quik and probably learnt from him some too, not the best example. his music and ear for sound is superb though, but it stays inside a particular genre.
i'd group quik/dre/timbaland/neptunes together as masters in the production game. they understand how sound-music work together above all else, where it becomes about energy, but with different nuances. transcendent of any individual genre. a lot of other people are either more beatmaker or more musician and you can hear it.

I'm pretty sure Quik learned more from working with Saadiq than the other way around. Saadiq is more seasoned than Quik, been doing it longer and has an incredible résumé. Let's Get Down is Quik's commercial peak but it's not Saadiq's.
I wouldn't put Quik on par with Dre, Timbaland, The Neptunes or Teddy Riley. Quik is a niche producer, a wonderful producer for that matter, but I don't think he's really more than that (which is already more than most can claim), I love Quik but westcoast heads usually give him more credit than he's due cause he happens to play several instruments and is replete with anecdotes about how he is articulate and worked with the best, no way he's on Dre's, Timbaland's or The Neptunes' level as a producer (although I prefer him over all of them but i'm speaking from a broader perspective than my own taste), otherwise he would have been more sought after. Quik is uncompromising, and by definition a producer has to be, cause he knows what it takes to craft a hit, tell rappers where to punch, coach them, etc. the problem with Quik is that he gave too much freedoms to his collaborators and they would sometimes turn songs that had the potential to be perfect songs into boring song. that Did Y'all Feel That song is a striking example of that. Quik spits a perfect verse, like a really flawless verse, and the second rapper drops an insipid verse and Mausberg's verse doesn't fit the song at all. You said Saadiq stays inside a particular genre, well Quik too, pretty much.

i'd agree that quik hasn't always worked with the best collaborators, i think most would. but when it comes to judging genius i'm more talking about what comes through with his vision as a sound artist, the engineering element in producing, rather than having a catalogue of hit records. it's a very subjective thing, but i can personally hear more articulateness through quiks music than with any other producer.
maybe it's because the musical direction strongly resonates with me too, but what i hear through the sound itself is glorious, pure sonic artistry. a cetain way things connect, something you can feel by hearing just a couple of drum sounds or a few seconds of a record. not something that's easy to explain, but it shines through and you know it's him. it's very similar with dre where the genius is in the mixing and sonics rather than just the music/notation.

I don't like your premise and I think it is a racist one when people try to suggest that somehow hip-hop is an inferior art-form. Hip-Hop is the greatest and most genius art-form ever invented.
...that said, no, Quik is not a genius. Quik is not even a legend. I don't know why he gets so much props at the forum. Sure, he is dope, very dope. But he is not the caliber as someone like Daz, and not even in the same league as Daz. Daz is a genius, not Quik.
-
DJ Quik is WITHOUT QUESTION a genius. If Quik is not a genius, then no one in hip hop is a genius. Fuck that shit.
Quik = Genius
Tupac = Genius
Other people come close, but these two are the only true geniuses in rap music in my opinion.
It's funny how there's a thread every month here saying Quik ain't that good. The only reason these threads emerge is that so many people here accurately appraise Quik's talent, and this riles up the haters. Niggas go and listen to Under The Influence, hear a couple wack songs, then get worked up and deny that Quik is a genius...come on now, that's madness. Quik is the greatest producer in the history of hip hop and one of the greatest rappers as well.

I fully support Quik and any of the heavywieght West Coast artist that really made the West Coast what it was. So I would never argue with someone over Quik's greatness. If you all love Quik and think he's great and he's a genius then I am all for that.
I'm just saying in my opinion I think he was dope but not legendary. He ain't on a level of somebody like Daz, for example. Daz is the greatest rapper/producer combo ever. But if ya'll love Quik and think he's a genius than I give you props for that.

Daz is a genius, not Quik.
im not disputing your shit but elaborate for the people on why dazs artistry is at such a higher caliber then quik so they dont think your just trying to get a rise.

Shit.. Kurupt said that shit... Daz was straight suicidal in those days... that's why his joints were so fire... his mind was in another world.. he was "On Top of the World!..." as he says at the end of the Dogg Pound record but at the same time shit was moving so fast and in all directions, he was high and low... I mean he was just livin on a level that Quik ain't really seen.
I mean, Quik was barely even on the B-team over at Death Row Records. How can Quik be on Daz level when they were over there chillin on the same label and Daz is fucking Royalty and Quik ain't even on the B-team? Quik was over on the bench somewhere behind the Lady of Rage and Soopafly.

so your saying that pain is probably the greatest inspiration for great art basically?

No, I'm saying you can't compare "Ambitionz of a Ridah" to "Hand In Hand" 8)

thats like comparing wu tang clan aint nothing to fuck with to 93 till infinity or something.
give me a better song comparison

It's not about songs, it's about Daz holding down Death Row when the label was crumbling. He was the last man standing atop a crumbled empire in 1998 when he released Revenge Retaliation and Get Back. There he was with the whole world tuned into Master P and No Limit Records, the lone man out West holding shit down still making gangsta shit at the same fuck quality that Death Row was making it in their prime.
There was Daz in the Middle of the East West Beef, knockin over buildings and shit in "New York, New York".
Me and my homies in jr. high were walking around throwin' up the DPG symbol when we'd pass by each others classes. We sure as hell weren't hollerin out Quik's name. We were sittin up on Saturday mornings in the Fall of 1995, watchin Kurupt and Daz give interviews for the new Dogg Food album set to take flight, after the label had just gotten dropped by Time Warner in the midst of a firestorm.
What's the hardest shit Quik has ever made? Daz made the hardest West Coast hip-hop that's ever been made and nobody can fuck with that. His beats go harder than any beats that have ever been made out West.
...there's some evidence... 8)
-
daz has never had a solo single as succesful as born in raised in compton or just like compton. i might be wrong about that though but those songs and the albums they came from were HUGEfor westcoast rap before daz even moved from Oklahoma.
who in the fuck would shout "dj quik!" to each other in passing lmfao?
-
It's like listen carrefully The Chronic or Doggystyle after bumpin all the greatest songs made by Funkadelic or Parliament. Oh, if you use to listen jazz music, of course it seems that something missin in hip-hop. But, what Dre did with P-Funk music or what DJ Quik did with his funky style was dope and sounded more polished and worked than other hip-hop sound. That's music ;) but I can agree wit you, hip-hop can't be as the same level as the sound of talents like Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Benny Goodman, P-Funk... However, some of westcoast classics are not far away...

B-Team? Quik was on Profile bondage!! Suge Knight wanted to sign him and 2nd II None to Death Row! This is waaaaay before Dogg Food.
Profile didn't Quik leave...then Suge Knight paid for recording, mixing and all process on "Safe+Sound" and then he paid the promotion!!
That album shake Los Angeles airwaves... 3 singles..Safe+Sound,Dollaz+Sense,Can I Eat It? 92.3 gave highly airplay to Quik.
DJ Quik never was a B-Team on Death Row...because he never was a member.
Quik is just a Death Row CEO friend-gang bang homie...
Why Daz wasn't scaled to mix All Eyez on Me? "Since he's better musician" than Quik...
History tell the truth

Much Love to Daz, i think he is a good musician..but
Man..Daz knockin buildings on a videoclip made him hard? Dude was beaten by Suge Knight.
Oh Well... Daz discussed by phone with Eazy-E in terminal stage of AIDS..such a hard movement!!
DJ Quik was more hard than him..DJ Quik destroyed MC Eiht reputation.
DJ Quik was involved on the brawl where was killed a Rolling 60'S Crip (Daz is from this gang!!) \O/ and Daz was present on El Rey Theather and saw everything
Quik dissed The Source Mag and NY..
DJ Quik once said in PPC song..."So if you're looking in The Source magazine and don't see me
It's cause the fucking East Coast is the enemy"
Then he performed at the muthafucking SOURCE AWARDS in NY!
That man is hard.
You have to admit this

Daz is not from the Rollin' 60's.
-
wow, some people took that really personal like i was talking about there father :o ;D
everythink is ok, i got quik in my sig, i´m a fan, 8)
just saying he is not a god alright, not a genius, not amerikas most complete artist (we know in rap you have to make stuff bigger that it is.... )
he IS one of the best hop hop producers, maybe in the top 5
but to be a most complete artist you maybe should play at least one instrument perfect..
he is up there with dre, pharell, saadiq, ryan leslie etc..
i think we can all agree and stop making him a musical genius like michael jackson or somethin
-
dj quik is a genius musician not just (some) hip-hop producer
-
Daz is not from the Rollin' 60's.

Are you serious? You got to be kidding right? I know you a stan/fan of Daz but you takin it a lil too far. Daz the greatest rapper/producer, wtf? He can't do neither all that well. Daz is nowhere near close to a level of Quik. Nothing Daz did on All Eyes On Me comes close to Hearts Of Men and Safe & Sounds shits on Daz's whole career. & that's not like I'm dissin Daz kuz I like his shit but c'mon bruh. Without Dre/Quik/Mike Dean mixing or Soopafly on the keys, ghost producing and/or co-producing dude shit is borderline garbage. Listen to those Nutso interviews from a month or so ago he breaks down pretty much Daz's role on them Death Row productions, lay the basic drum loop & the musicians come in and make the songs what they were. Quik on the other hand his shit bang with or without musicians, co-producers. Now like the op I wouldn't say genius but I will say Quik>>>>>>>>>>Daz any day of the year.
-
Daz is the greatest artist/producer of all-time? It's not a disrespect to him because he is definitely talented but that statement is overblown to me. He's great with the beats when he's on but when it comes to producing the whole package, Dr Dre and DJ Quik are those guys. When they oversee a project, the concept through and through is put together meticulously. Even if Dre doesn't do the beats on every album, the production standard is enforced. Same with Quik.
Daz is capable of being a great producer but he's more hustler than Dre or Quik. He sees music as a way of creating revenue and some of his releases fall victim to that. He'll put out three or four albums in a calendar year where Quik or Dre don't do music when their heart is not in the mode to create.
-
i trolled the shit out of this thread lol
its now about blue tractors and daz now hahahahaha
-
who in the fuck would shout "dj quik!" to each other in passing lmfao?
You mean you never used to throw the West coast hand sign screaming "Thug Life, Westside" in high school? lol
-
i guess in KC its the norm...just be passing a homie from lunch to PE exclaim loudly "westside, outlaws!!!!!" and just keep it moving hahahaha
-
I am probably one of the biggest dj quik fans I know, and would listen to any song no matter which one and would be happy. But, his best shit by far was when he was working with g one and also rob bacon. Yeah he is good without them, but with them he is great!
