Hi everybody,
I'm new here.
I need the opinion of true fans who are familiar with Daz's career. I've been a huge fan of his music for over 20 years. He is a renowned producer and beatmaker.
These days, he is claiming his share of royalties from the Death Row era and rightly so. However, producer Barney Rumble, a former Death Row keyboardist, recently claimed on his Instagram page that Daz Dillinger doesn't know how to play the keyboard and is incapable of creating a melody.
I asked Soopafly for confirmation on Instagram, and he backed this up. Soopafly was always Daz's right-hand man in the studio. Like Barney Rumble, he maintains that Daz's production work was limited to drum programming. As a fan, I was really surprised and disappointed to hear this, especially since Daz was always credited as the producer in his album liner notes (and even as the keyboardist on the album *Retaliation, Revenge & Get Back*).
Yet, all of Daz's solo albums and his work with Tha Dogg Pound during the DPG Recordz era bear his unmistakable signature sound. Do you think Barney Rumble and Soopafly are telling the truth, or are they trying to downplay Daz's talent in the wake of his feud with Snoop ? After all, Snoop did threaten to destroy him professionally.
I asked Daz Dillinger the same question directly on an Instagram post, but he chose to disable comments, which took me by surprise. Barney Rumble claims to have produced "21 Jump Street" and "Big Pimpin'", tracks credited to Daz, as well as "Ain't No Fun," which Daz claims to have produced alongside Warren G. Yet, in many interviews, Daz asserts that he produced the *Dogg Food* album by playing the Juno 106 keyboard. I'd really appreciate your thoughts on this crucial point :
- if Daz can't actually play the keyboard, then he lied, but if Barney Rumble and Soopafly are saying this just to back Snoop and downplay Daz's talent, that's not right either.
After all, Daz criticized Dr. Dre in the past for failing to credit him, yet according to Barney Rumble, Daz did the exact same thing to him. When you look closer, Daz always produced in a duo team, whether with Soopafly, Blaqthoven, Mike Dean, or Ivan Johnson. But if he only handled the drums on the MPC without playing bass or keys, I find it dishonest for him to claim full production credit. That would imply Daz only did the drums on tracks like "Ambitionz Az A Ridah" or "Ain't Mad At Cha," while Soopafly created everything else.
I'm not trying to stir up controversy, i'm just a fan trying to understand the situation, and i'd love to hear some outside opinions.
Thanks !

remember for years the same question arose about Dre saying he has co producers making the beats and he just touches them up and takes all the credit
all I know is everyone in hip hop that I have heard have all vouched for Dre and that's good enough for me
as far as Daz is concerned if you asked Soopafly this and he backed up what Barney Rubble said then I'm most likely taking their word for it
-
I think he produces his own shit as well as others. Check the video below.

barney rubble and soopafly are right
daz has concepts and ideas that his musicians put together .... daz is what casuals think dre is
while dre is a mastermind when it comes to the technical aspect of production (layering, eqing, structure, etc), daz has very limited knowledge of the technicalities and his strongest ability is coming up with loops on a drum machine......
dre, quik, soopafly, mike dean, ivan johnson, etc did the heavy lifting on most his productions
it's very well documented that dre ghost produced "dogg food" and gave daz the credit because they were trying to build daz up as the next big death row producer

However, producer Barney Rumble, a former Death Row keyboardist, recently claimed on his Instagram page that Daz Dillinger doesn't know how to play the keyboard and is incapable of creating a melody.
it doesn't make any sense . everyboby can create a melody on a keyboard specially in hip hop or electro music . you only need a few app, tools , softwares ; Barney Rumble probably had an issue with Daz .
Ambitionz az a rider has only 3 or 4 notes , just one chord ,one odd sound on a violon ? and the song is a masterpiece
Daz Production is unique , original

you're in denial .... not saying daz isn't capable .. just that a lot of his best work has a more experienced producer behind it.

Yes he is.

dre has more experienced producers behind him?
:fisherlol:

This question is a simple one... Daz and a bunch of other producers at Death Row benefited from 2-3 major things...
#1 - Dr Dre's personal hand picked musicians (Tony Green, Barney, Ricky Rouse, Butch Smalls Etc)
#2 - Great inhouse studio engineers (Dave Aron, Tommy D , Carlos Warlick Etc)
#3 - Dr Dre's sounds.
When it comes to Barney he had a job that is a gift and a curse. The gift is your working for the hottest label, the curse your doing a lot of work but getting no credit as a hired musician. This happens all the time with hired musicians, after a while they feel cheated out of credit. But this would be my question to Barney and all hired musicians, where are the hits? Outside of Death Row Barney produced no hits, that's not a shot at Barney just a question. Daz & Barney made a great combination instead of taking shots at each other they should get back together and make more hits.

dre has more experienced producers behind him?
:fisherlol:
i dont talk specially about experience but Dre always worked with multiple producers and famous ones

with daz, they worked over him
therein lies the difference

Can you post the screenshot showing that you asked Soopafly himself just yesterday "Is Daz incapable of making a melody" and Soopafly immediately replied to you and said "that is correct"?
You're new here and claim to be a Daz fan for over 20 years and love his music, yet you're genuinely unsure is Daz creates his own beats or not....hmmmm There are videos posted online of Daz playing the keyboard and showing interviewers how he makes beats. Seems like a quick google or youtube search would easily have your question answered if you are truly coming with this concern in good faith.
-

You re right . I m not sure its him but it sound like
a Daz beat. At least he coproduced the song.

I understand your questions, and I'll answer them point by point.
I'm new here, so I'm not familiar with all the features yet. Please explain how to upload the photo, and I'll gladly post Soopafly's reply from Instagram.
I've been listening to Daz Dillinger and the Dogg Pound since around 2002. I own the entire discography, and the album booklets clearly state "produced by Daz Dillinger"—sometimes with Mike Dean or Soopafly as co-producers, or Ivan Johnson from 2005 onwards. I had assumed Daz was the main beatmaker, but according to Barney Rumble and Soopafly, Daz doesn't know how to play the keyboard.
There isn't a single video on YouTube or the internet showing Daz playing the keyboard or synth. The only existing video is the one posted in this thread, where he's shown mastering the MPC. According to Rumble and Soopafly, Daz's skills are limited to drum programming. If that's true, it's disappointing, because I thought—like DJ Quik or Battlecat—Daz was the one creating the melodies for his songs.
I'm asking this in good faith; I'm not a troll, and I'm not trying to badmouth Daz—quite the opposite. But I want to have a discussion here with people who might know more about this subject than I do.
-
2pac on Skandalous - Yo Daz stop fuckin around with the piano and drop this shit.
Thats enough proof.
He might not be a top notch key player but he is a great overall producer (drums keys (effective notes) hooks flows); who needs others to polish his sound: Dre, Quik, etc.
His 96/97 beats are unmatched in my opinion Nobody got those uptempo adrenaline smooth tracks: 2 of amerikaz most wanted, our daily bread, like that (with WC), way too major, etc. Thats his signature.
-

I do find it interesting that the credits are nowhere to be found when one of the things about back in the Death Row days was that Daz was not credited for his work
he is also listed as executive producer on the back cover which again is interesting because Suge used to do the same exact thing while not putting the credits in the Doggystyle booklet for instance
of course Suge was the executive producer and not an actual producer which Daz himself is

Thanks for your contribution. Daz's beat from the Death Row Era are classics.
But all the work he did as independant is very interesting too that's why i want to know the details of his skills.

In a word, No. Daz is not a real producer lol.

are you sure Daz produced this?
I can't find the credits anywhere
When Daz released RRGB 2, He had posted the album's release date on Instagram, noting that the album was entirely produced by him and Ivan Johnson.
-
it's very well documented that dre ghost produced "dogg food" and gave daz the credit because they were trying to build daz up as the next big death row producer
I never bothered to check this at all because it was so fuckin obvious Dre did it. I remember looking at the back of the CD after I listened to it for the first time, seeing the producer and thinking, "No way dude." LOL.
Daz takes credit for producing songs and entire bodies of work that sound that sound nothing like what he puts out when you know he's by himself in the studio. Just from an auditory standpoint - without even laying eyes on a producer - it's clearly not the same person lol. Pretty much an open secret at this point lol.
-

Because for me, i thought Daz, Dre etc are the guys whi actualy did the song'
a producer can be a beat maker, a composer, a conductor, an orchestrator, a director etc all in one
that is what dre is
a beat maker is just someone who can make a beat but doesn't oversee the entire direction of the song from inception to completion
daz was always good on the drum machine but always needed direction from others to make his sound more musical... he is indeed a producer, but there are levels to it
dre, quik, battlecat, warren are in a different tier
daz is there with meech, jellyroll, blaqthoven, scott storch, fredwreck etc.
difference being, daz was involved in more classix so he sometimes gets shoehorned by many into that upper echelon just on the strength of that

A few weeks ago, Daz appeared on the YouTube channel called Bacc Tracc to explain the secrets behind the composition of "Big Pimpin'." Following that video, Barney Rumble lashed out at Daz on Instagram, and Soopafly responded with laughter. That's why I reached out to them on Instagram.

Those doesnt mean daz dont have the gift or he is not a producer.
Daz always have a signature sound of his own whetherhe is working with barney or not.
Just because Daz is not a keyboardist or a musician it doesnt mean he cant create melodies with keyboard.
He produced songs with dre, dsoopafly, barney, ivan johnson, mike dean and all sounds daz.
so he is good at working with different musicians and creating a signature sound at the end by taking what he needed from them.
BUT, as one member said here, what goes around comes around, daz claimed dre many times for stealing credits. it's not stealing credits.
being a musician on a song, being a beatmaker, being a co producer, being a writer, being a composer are all different things. producer stands above of all.

See, this is why i wanted the screenshots, precisely what I thought. First of all, Rubble said "SO FOR THESE SPECIFIC SONGS" Daz did not do the melody. Not DAZ CAN"T MAKE MELODIES as you initially stated. Rubble never said that. B) Your conversation with Soopafly you claimed was a few days ago was actually from July, and again, agreeing with Barney for THOSE SPECIFIC SONGS BEING MENIONED. And then you jumped to the conclusion and stretched it to create the narrative that both these guys said "Daz doesn't know how to create melodies" which was never stated by either person.

If my intentions were dishonest, I wouldn't have posted the screenshots. Barney Rumble states quite clearly at the beginning of the message: "DAZ DOES NOT PLAY KEYS"—a statement he confirmed in the comments on those Instagram posts. And Soopafly confirms that Daz's production work is limited to drum programming. Nothing more, nothing less.
I don't even understand the tone of your message; we're here to have a friendly discussion. It's as if I didn't have the right to ask the question. I'm a fan, but I'm still allowed to wonder about things after what Barney Rumble said.
Here is what else Rumble says on the subject—take a good look at the comment where he says: "People really think Daz plays keys but HE DON'T That ain't a diss just facts":

Barney Rumble's posts received support from Snoop Dogg, who left a comment.
That's why I signed up here—to get other fans' opinions.
Daz and Snoop have been feuding for years. Last year, Snoop posted a video threatening to destroy Daz professionally.
Since Soopafly remains on very good terms with Snoop Dogg but doesn't seem close to Daz at all anymore, could all of this be an attempt to destroy Daz's career?
That was sort of my theory, but I have to face the facts.

naah there's no plotting there
what they're saying is 100% true
i worked with daz on some tracks, most recently for my album and he did (part of) the beat
like barney says, daz is dope in his own right but his strength is mostly in his drums
soopafly is unequivocally more musical than daz

As a producer you might know its not only about drums and melody. When it comes to producing daz know how to create a song from start to end. He is very experienced with song structure, where to give space to the song, where to tone it down and where to make it bang. Most musicians dont know about it and thats why they never produce or compose so they stay as good musicans only. Daz is a fucking good west coast producer. He is one of architects of west coast gangsta rap and g-funk.
At the end of the day he is credited as the producer of Respect, Lets Play House, C-Walk, Groupie, These Days, Big Pimpin, What would you do, I aint mad at cha, ambitioz as a ridah...
He is a legend.
Soopafly or Barney never had a vision or producer wise abilty to make those kind of hits on their own.
Daz is only good at drum programming? I dont agree bro.
That n**** produced Midnight "fucking" Love maaaaan!

You're right; I don't buy into the conspiracy theory. I believed it for a few days, but then I came to my senses. I have to admit, though, that I was a bit disappointed to learn Daz doesn't play the keyboards, because I love his albums—especially the solo ones released on DPG Recordz—and I'd always assumed he played the melodies. I remember a 2006 interview around the time *So So Gangsta* came out where the journalist told Daz how much he liked the song "Rat Tat Tat," and Daz replied, "I played the bass on this one." He also claimed to have played the Juno-106 on *Dogg Food*, so I really don't know who's right or wrong.
I prefer to focus on the careers of these musical geniuses.
-
Come on man, we just talk here as fan of westcoast music. Ain't got time to be a troll.
you re a hater , not a fan . you said Dogg Food was co produced by Dr Dre ? now lets use some logic
Daz produced 5 songs on all eyes on me , right ? and some of the best tracks
Dr Dre didnt mix or produced these songs , right ?;
any musician or a fan with a ear know tracks like ambitionz as a ridah and 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted sounds like Doggfood , same dark atmosphere, minimalism etc..
Kurupt said it recently " the first Tupac songs produced by Daz was our sound , doggfood sound "
Daz 's signature specially in the 90's is recognizable . Just listen to C Walk ..and you re going to say Dr Dre or Barney are behind C Walk ?
i like Soopafly but his productions are totally different from the dark atmosphere and minimalism behind DoggFood and All Eyes on me

That's what I've just realized from all the contributions here: the difference between a beatmaker and a producer.
When I listen to Soopafly's three solo albums, they sound nothing like Daz's albums. This proves that Daz really does bring his own vision and ideas; even if he doesn't actually play the keys, all his albums have a signature sound—a personal touch.
As for the *Dogg Food* album—and correct me if I'm wrong—my understanding is that Daz primarily handled the drums, Soopafly is largely credited as the keyboardist, and Dr. Dre mixed the album. However, I recall DJ Quik saying back in 2011, around the release of *Book of David*, that he helped Daz with a few tracks on *Dogg Food* and also contributed to *Tha Dogg Father*, though he didn't specify exactly which songs he worked on.
For years, Daz has frequently criticized Dr. Dre, accusing him of failing to give him the credit he deserved; Daz is currently taking legal action to reclaim all his rights from the Death Row era. However, what disappoints me is that, according to Barney Rumble, Daz did the exact same thing to him that he had criticized Dr. Dre for doing.
For context, Barney Rumble has posted several videos on his Instagram page in which he replays the melodies he worked on. He isn't just criticizing Daz; he also posted two videos replaying "California Love" and the "California Love (Remix)," confirming that he created the basslines, chords, and synth parts. He stated that Dr. Dre did not compose the melodies or the drums, but rather directed the session and mixed both versions.

you re a hater , not a fan . you said Dogg Food was co produced by Dr Dre ? now lets use some logic
Daz produced 5 songs on all eyes on me , right ? and some of the best tracks
Dr Dre didnt mix or produced these songs , right ?;
any musician or a fan with a ear know tracks like ambitionz as a ridah and 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted sounds like Doggfood , same dark atmosphere, minimalism etc..
Kurupt said it recently " the first Tupac songs produced by Daz was our sound , doggfood sound "
Daz 's signature specially in the 90's is recognizable . Just listen to C Walk ..and you re going to say Dr Dre or Barney are behind C Walk ?
i like Soopafly but his productions are totally different from the dark atmosphere and minimalism behind DoggFood and All Eyes on me
I NEVER said Dr. Dre produced *Dogg Food*... go back and read my messages; I never said that—quite the opposite, in fact. I've always maintained that Daz produced that classic.
Read my messages again; there is absolutely NO hate on my part.
If you aren't capable of debating calmly—without letting your emotions get in the way or attacking people for no reason—that's your problem, not mine.

That n**** produced Midnight "fucking" Love maaaaan!
i never said daz is only good at drum programming
i said that was his strength
all those joints you named were overseen by someone else who added production value in the mix (dre with dogg food, quik with all eyez on me, raphael saadiq with midnight love etc.)
that's not to say daz isn't a capable producer .. but if you listen to the tracks off dillinger and young gotti before mike dean got involved on the production tip, you can see how stripped down they are in comparison.
-
Daz doesn't play the keyboards
is it a joke ? Daz play the keyboards . its Hip Hop music not jazz or classical .
from what i know , among the famous producers , only DJ Quik can play jazz chords , complex scales
in an old interview, Quik said he used diminished and altered chords . most of the hip hop producers dont know what s an altered chord
and it dont mean shit ,dope hip hop producers are completly ignorant in musical technique , arpeggio etc

I never accused you of doing it intentionally, this is for all walks of life, but this is a perfect life lesson how people can exaggerate or manipulate things being said to fit a narrative. That is most likely how you interpreted that. I encourage you to reread what each of these gentlemen wrote, and i think you will see you were overgeneralizing what they were saying.
I do sense a bit of 'poking the bear' mentality and not a good faith attempt at finding an answer. You titled the thread "is Daz a real producer"....does not being able to play keys not make you a great producer? Again, not sure how the idea that Daz doesn't play keys translates to he's not a real producer. Seems like a big leap. And again, he can play keys. Admittedly, not as well as THE MAN SOOPAFLY or Rubble, but they don't play keys as well as concert pianists, so does that make them any less of producers in your eyes because of that?
The post should've been "I thought Daz played keys on all his records, turns out he didn't, learned something new today" But no it's "He's not a real producer?" That's where you got sideways with some people here.

I think thats what a good producer does, to work with the right team. Even mastering a song is another expertness. Mixing also. You cant blame a producer for not mixing and mastering his songs. Those another different expertness. As long as you know whom to go to mix and master your song, you are doing the right thing and you are a good producer. As long as you know which instrument and instrumentalist you need in your song you are a good producer. Dillinger and Young Gotti album is my favorite DPG album and i thank Daz for bringing Mike Dean to create that classic.
Without colin wolfe, glove, mel man, mike elizondo, scott storch, dre wouldnt make those hits. But without dre there wouldnt be either. Dre is mixing his own songs, thats a bonus but just because timbaland is not mixing his songs that doesnt mean dre is better producer or opposite.
You are a good and top producer if you know who to go to make your song better in anyway.
Theres no such thing like "hey im dj bla bla and im making my songs on my own, i play all instrumentals, i mix it and i master it so im a better producer than daz or dre"... Even quik knows how to play guitar and piano he let musicians to play at the end to get the best for production.
Timbaland was already a great producer but he did his opus magnum songs with Danja.
Also Kanye.. he did some of his best work with Mike Dean.
We can say the same thing with Eminem and Luis Resto. Em has a signature soınd and he wisely have Luis close to himself to producing classics. Em cant play keyboard or any instrument. He also is not good at drum programming. But can you say Eminem is not a producer or somebody add production value to his works.

Calitornia Love Remix is actually the OG version. Its produced by Laylaw of Above The Law. Dre hears it and want to use it for Pac. Then he change the beat, but keep the idea and chorus. Then they release it as produced by dr. Dre. Then laylaw got mad and asks WTF dre?? Dre says its company's fault and it has nothing to do with him but he says he will compansate it by using laylaws og beat in album. Laylaw calms down after this. Then album comes out and he sees his Og version is also credited as produced by dre. Then he cant even reach to dre and he sues death row. As i know he gets a good amount of money after that trial.
True story :)

I think The foundation of the song is the roger troutman s voice . I understand Laylaw was mad .. I thought it was Dr Dre idea .. we should replace the title of the thread by ..is Dre a real producer haha

And the bassline of california love remix
Is from the song intimate connection from
the band Kleener .so Barney probably played
the bass but he didnt create the bassline.

I think your timeline is off a bit. The original version was a Dre solo that already had the new beat. So did Laylaw produce the original Dre solo version, then Dre remixes his solo version, then Pac wants it so Dre fine tunes the solo version to include Pac and updates the beat? Dre didn't want to give it to Pac, Pac asked for it. By the time Pac heard Dre's solo version and asked for it for his album, Dre already had the updated beat for it.
Or are you saying there's a Dre solo version out there somewhere that has Dre rapping his two verses over the REMIX Laylaw original beat?

yes... producers should absolutely use musicians .. but there's a difference between utilizing musicians to achieve a vision via orchestration (dre) and being together in a room with seasoned producers while piggybacking off their ideas (daz)
both great at what they do.. there's just levels to it
mixing is a different skill than producing.. but when the mixing process involves ideas, song structuring, and overall mapping out the track to your vision, then that is a supplementary production... and in the case of an album like dogg food, dre put in more work during "mixing" in shaping the sound than daz did on what he was credited as producer for.
i've had lengthy discussions with numerous people who were directly involved in the album, so im not just speakin out my ass here.

laylaw did work on the remix only ... he had a beat that dre liked .. dre completely reworked it for the "california love" remix you hear on all eyez on me ... the reason they put that version on all eyez on me is because the og was still slated to go on dre's solo at that time
laylaws revisionism has been all over the place

I think Daz can produce and he has signature touches like these two songs - this first song reminds me of Ambitions and this is his remix and its outside of rap:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elYvn4dwV6s
Another one Daz did which sounds eeriely similar:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZJ8zD6XXlw
Because a lot of Daz's stuff sounds the same - he definitely has to be his own producer. I mean, sure he has co-producers or raps over other people's beats but he always credits them. I think that Daz is a producer in regards to most of what he's done in the industry and I'm sure there's stuff he's not properly credited for that might not even have his signature sound like the two records above (I.E. Doggystyle The Album). But he stays beatmaker because that's what he has the budget to do and is comfortable with and no one really gets onto him to make beats outside of his camp. I think he knows the equipment and uses it, but doesn't really produce much due to demand - he just makes beats and sequences what he likes for albums.

this is definitely his sound
notice how it's drum and bass driven
the instruments are conceived and played by others
for the record, daz is a very dope producer .. hes basically a poor man's dre (which is a compliment)

I feel you, Sccit. I don't really think anyone is up there with Dr. Dre or his people in terms of hip hop production minus Timbaland's people. The bar for production is very high. On the West Coast, Jellyroll comes close to Dr. Dre, Storch, and Quik with this beat for Xzibit. Do I think Daz could do a record like this? Yes. Its all about timing and who you network with.

First og version was remix version which is produced by laylaw. Dre took it and produced the first version you all heard. It was a solo track. Then he gave it to pac. And laylaw saw that he is not credited. Dre told him that he will fix it by using laylaws og version in album as a remix. Then laylaw is not credited again. Sure dre mixed and co produced the remix version too but it was laylaw's beat.

barney rubble and soopafly are right
daz has concepts and ideas that his musicians put together .... daz is what casuals think dre is
while dre is a mastermind when it comes to the technical aspect of production (layering, eqing, structure, etc), daz has very limited knowledge of the technicalities and his strongest ability is coming up with loops on a drum machine......
dre, quik, soopafly, mike dean, ivan johnson, etc did the heavy lifting on most his productions
it's very well documented that dre ghost produced "dogg food" and gave daz the credit because they were trying to build daz up as the next big death row producer
interesting about the drum machine loops...
Quik definitely tightened up Daz All Eyez on Me shit, and Dre polished off all his Dogg Food work and probably a lot of his pre-Dogg Food work as well like Murder Was the Case, Doggystyle, etc.
But who the fucc polished his RRGB bangers?!? Cause that whole album was flawless as well. Maybe Soopafly? Cause I know he was tight with Soopafly during the making of that record. And you got a great argument that I might've loved Soopafly's solo from around that time more if it had been a major release in the midwest and I had bumped it in its proper space and time.
But.. then there's another argument on Daz. And that's that he is not the status of a Dre or even a Quik, where he can get all these great musicians and engineers to surround him and put in all this quality work. Likely, Daz is such a pain in the ass to be around, and not even that well known outside of the dubcc to be honest (in spite of Dogg Food and All Eyez On Me work the average music fan doesn't even know him) -- POINT IS he probably does have to do a lot of shit all by himself. So I would guess he can produce records top to bottom, they just ain't going to be as dope without that mid-90's Death Row polish he had with all that talent sitting in the same studio and working on the same songs together.

DAMN!!! Homie you hooked it up.
That "Get On Up" joint is vintage 96', I had the single with that fire B-Side Wutang remix of "Freaking You" and yet now 30 years later I'm just now hearing there was this DOGG POUND remix of "GET ON UP"!! In fact, Jodeci and Dogg Pound were both at MTV Beach House August 96' performing -- I remember it like it was yesterday, Jodeci did "Get On Up" and Dogg Pound came on seperate doing "Play House" and "New York New York
That other joint is a banger as well by K-Ball. Did that ever get any radio/video play? Cause that seems pretty close to Daz prime and they thought enough of it to do a legit music video
Props for posting!

yeah in real time I wasn't aware of that Jodeci remix it wasn't until I found it on westcoast2k later on
nice little jab by Daz at Jermaine Dupri on his verse too..."Be careful, amateurs, when The Row pass by Lyrical drive-by, don't get mistaken for another

That's so weird how JD keeps getting dissed by Death Row affiliates and yet all along all of them were friends, SMH
Kriss Kross tells stories of learning to sip 40's and shit at a young age with the Dogg Pound. Many mentions of parties where they were hanging out in Atlanta at JD/So So Def parties. One of the first artists Snoop collabed with when he was trying to break free of Death Row was JD for JD's first solo and first solo single on "Wanna Party" but because of Snoop still kind of being tied to Death Row it was restricted from going on the album so JayD had to make a version of Usher to launch his album. But I specifically remember rollin around and bumpin this single when Snoop was still technically on Death Row (but stranded, just months before joining Master P)

lmao... the tracks on all eyez on me are great, but sound nothing like dogg food
and btw, quik mixed those.
I don't know bout that homie... Dogg Food and All Eyez On Me are like Jeffrey Jordan and Michael Jordan. Daz even said something in a recent info about All Eyez on Me being a Dogg Pound album or some shit to that effect.
Because you basically took like an already great and living legend artist which was 2pac, who had already mastered his sound, his craft, his image -- on 5 Mic Classic Me Against the World. And united him with the Death Row Family which was at that moment riding the strength of the platinum Dogg Food album as their most recent project.
So Pac gets out of jail and IMMEDIATELY goes to the studio and Daz is already there, and already has everything locked, loaded, and ready. So the Dogg Food album and the All Eyez on Me album are just too close together for you to try to argue that they are a different sound. To me, the sound is the same.
-
But who the fucc polished his RRGB bangers?!? Cause that whole album was flawless as well.
exactly . that s why this thread is suspicious and no disrespect towards tharealSMK ..
and the soundtrack Gang Related contains a few Daz classics like Way too major, mash for our dream, life so hard
and these songs are typically death row and Daz s sounds . No Dre , No Quik behind . Daz and Soopafly
Daz 's style is recognizable, consistent . he dont use many samples unlike Dr Dre

Again, that fascinating lost era of West Coast Rap between the fall of Death Row and resurgence era sparked by "Bitch Please" feat. Xzibit prod. by Dre

^^This is the version JayD said he had to make when he couldn't get Snoop cleared for the album (probably because of Suge)
yeah I really don't know the exact moment when things went south between Death Row and JD
that song that leaked a while ago proved that Snoop and them were cool at one point

Not bad tiers but Daz is the second greatest producer of all time behind Dre. And Johnny J needs to be in one of those tiers
daz is better than warren or quik?
LOL
-
I don't know bout that homie...
To me, the sound is the same.
daz beats on dogg food has a much larger and more polished sound .. the layering is on 2 different levels .. there's a similarity, but you can clearly tell it was handled by 2 different people (dre vs quik)

daz is better than warren or quik?
LOL
Of course Daz is better. All Eyez on Me is obvious proof.
Warren G - "Definition of a Thug" and "How Long Will They Mourn Me" are great but not equal to "Ambitionz of a Ridah" and "2 of Americaz Most Wanted" and "I Ain't Mad at Cha"
and "Heartz of Men" is a spectacularly produced song, but it got overshadowed by Daz joints on the album
-
exactly . that s why this thread is suspicious and no disrespect towards tharealSMK ..
and the soundtrack Gang Related contains a few Daz classics like Way too major, mash for our dream, life so hard
and these songs are typically death row and Daz s sounds . No Dre , No Quik behind . Daz and Soopafly
Daz 's style is recognizable, consistent . he dont use many samples unlike Dr Dre
you literally just made the point.. it was daz and soopafly. which is why they were classix but not timeless on the dogg food (dre) and all eyez on me level (quik) level

but again.. quik was doing heavy lifting for daz on all eyez on me
that's the point i'm making .. it's why none of his solos are on the level of all eyez on me
you leave daz in a room all alone wit an artist vs quik all alone in a room wit an artist and you'll see that while daz is great, there's levels to it

good point on Quik polishing up Daz All Eyez on Me sound

good point on Quik polishing up Daz All Eyez on Me sound
Quik was mix engineer of album. He mixed almost entire album. Somebody else mastered also. Percussion was handled by somebody else also. Producing is a team effort.
When anybody says "hey these daz songs are dope and classics but bla bla played instruments or bla bla mixed it" means nothing if you are trying to underrate daz. Thats a foolish move.
-
The mixing engineer and the recording engineer who register a song are not counted by those who wrote the song .same with the mastering .its necessary but its a background work .
The rapper ,the producer write the song. And sometimes the musicians if they add anyrhing different

It's an interesting thought.....I'm not sure i agree yet, but a case could be made. Look at Daz's body of work, even to this very day still making songs. Even his latest track Devil Aint Shyt for Smith and Wesson, fire. Ever since he started going on the podcast circuit and bringing attention to everything he's actually had his hands on since 93 to today, it's pretty impressive when you think about it. Even for producing stuff outside of Death Row.
Quik has a lot of bangers, and for late 90's to 2010, he was the man....but he's done pretty much nothing the last decade of any note. Warren G, again, had bangers in the 90's and early 2000's, but nothing much since then. Daz continues to churn out hits. Sure, he misses alot of the time and has definitely saturated the market, but a Daz beat in 2026 still holds weight. Dunno about a Quik or Warren beat at this point. And I love both their music, Quik and Warren have made timeless classics, but so has Daz, and he's been doing it longer now. I'm pretty confident Daz has surpassed Warren in my eyes in my all time greatest producer list, and he is coming up on Quik, not there yet, but close.

daz is better than warren or quik?
LOL
why LOL??
it's very subjective issue.
some thinks daz is better some think warren or quick are better.
it depends on each person.
i would say quik > daz > warren for example.
anybody can say daz > warren > quik also and you shouldnt "LOL" :)
daz is a great producer i think. whether he works with soopafly or ivan johnson or mike dean or quik or dre... he always made hits, bangers and they all sounded pure daz! each time. it's quite the same with dre, whether he worked with colin wolfe or camara kambon or scott storch or mike elizondo. producer was always dre and all sounded pure dre. you can't see soopafly making bangers on his owns, you can't see colin wolfe making hits on his own. however thats not something negative, because they have a different gift rather than being a producer. they are good musicians and composers.
quik is a multi-instrumentalist, musician, mix engineer, producer... he is a motherfucking all in one type of producer. but that doesnt mean he is a better producer than daz or dre or warren or whoever. just because dj quik mixed daz's beats in all eyes on me doesnt make daz a worse producer also it doesnt make quik a better producer.
-
Dj Quik is a good musician and mixer but i dont really like his beats. Too soft or too complicated. I can hardly name 5 dope dj Quik beats, let alone hits (same goes for Battlecat). While Daz has many bangers, mostly in that 95-98 era (with whoever assisted him).
I put Daz next to Dre as a producer/rapper. After those two there is Pete Rock, Diamond D, Large Pro.
-
daz is better than warren or quik?
LOL
he's definitely not in Quik's league...Quik might be 2nd to only Dre
I would probably give the edge to Daz over Warren but that's just personal preference
Daz has not produced the caliber of album of G Funk Era unless you count Dogg Food and then he most certainly has
and then you have Daz's first 2 solos which are not on that level but pretty damn close to classic if not classic
-
My fav ;D
1 DAZ
2 Dr Dre
3 Cold 187 aka Big Hutch
4 Dj Quik
