Wow, Teddy Riley can produce
« on: March 12, 2014, 07:34:34 AM »
Never heard this Snoop track before but its produced by Teddy Riley and it's mighty funky:

Snoop Dogg featuring Jazmine Sullivan - 'Different Languages'.

Anyone got an instrumental?

"Teddy Riley can produce"? You might wanna really do your homework on the man before you base that statement on a Snoop Dogg song. Do a lil research & see the hits after hits he is behind. The man changed the whole game & brought in a new sound with the new jack swing sound that opened the lane for most of these 'hot' producers today in addition to discovering & mentoring The Neptunes.

^^ and that. dude is a legend, but for some reason i'm not rating him as high as the quiks, dres. probably because his sound itself is not so distinctive (nothing to do with his innovations in music).

I would put Teddy Riley up there with Dr. Dre.

I know he's been making beats since way back when but after Dangerous he kind of vanished. Came back with Blackstreet and jacked a few Pac concepts and then gone again, I'd never heard that Snoop album or track and was amazed at the jazzy production - you could tell it had been made by a producer and not just a beatmaker.

Don't forget Wrex In Effect!!

That was like one of the first rap albums I ever had the pleasure of listening to on my own from beginning to end.  I usually think of Snoop "Doggystyle" because that was when I first got my own cd player and that was my first cd I ever had.  But before that I remember having a tape player and bumping Wrex In Effect.  "Rump Shaker" was an obvious mega-hit but I remember bumping some of the other joints on the album.

after Dangerous he didn't vanish, he produced some of the best music from the 90's. Dangerous came out in 1991. I like how you dismiss the Blackstreet era as him jacking a few Pac concepts when it's obviously much more than that.

Teddy Riley is one of the most influential and talented producers in R&B, along with fellow VA residents Timbaland and Pharrell (who was put on by Riley and co-produced and co-wrote Rump Shakers).

How is his sound not so distinctive when he's responsible for creating an entire genre : new jack swing. there are songs that without even checking the credits you know Riley is behind it. for example My Prerogative isn't credited to Teddy Riley since he was getting jacked at the time by Gene Griffin but you know he produced it. Teddy Riley has so many distinctive elements he always uses in his songs, from his keytar and keyboard solos (Keith Sweat's there's a right and a wrong way to love somebdy, Bobby Brown's My Prerogative, Bobby Brown's I'll Be Good, Guy's Piece of my Love, Guy's Don't Clap Just Dance), to his peculiar use of the talkbox, not to mention its heavy interpolating of p-funk music.

typical late 80's Teddy Riley productions :

Cot damn, I should change the title to "Wow, Teddy Riley can really produce".

Great tracks there, had no idea his discography was varied, maybe he should have adlibed on the songs and danced in the videos.

I'm actually quite surprised that people over here forget about Teddy Riley. I guess he kind of predates the concept of a "super producer" though. He came up before the producer really started getting his shine but fuck, I remember how big it was for him and Dre to be working together on that Blackstreet record back in the day.

well teddy riley was kind of the first super producer, he was one of the first ones to ad lib during songs ("yup yup") and to be sometimes as visible as the artist he produced for. definitely my favorite R&B producer with Face & Reid, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and DeVanté
