interview DR. STANK  (March 2003) | Written By: Lil Jay for Westcoast2k

Back again with a new artist feature, this time on Riverside Rapper/Producer Dr. Stank. He's definitely bringin up that underground sound from the new generation on the West. As always we offer you all his backround info, news on his debut album, and unheard audio tracks. Read below.

Dr. Stank hails from the IE / Inland Empire in California, and is part of a MC Click in the San Bernardino/Riverside area that also includes Sly Boogy, Lunch who is from South Central, Chuck Tha Innocent, and Sly Boogy's cousing Dirty Birdy.

He is releasing his debut album this year and he has a few features including WC, Redman, Dirty Birdy, Butch Cassidy, Damizza & many more. He will be suppose to get beats from Hi-Tek & Premier. The first single is called "Smell Me" and its slamin! Its suppose to drop in March/April with a video. Stank recorded a track entitled "Dangerous" with producer Damizza. The song features Butch Cassidy and the track slightly resembles Michael Jackson's "You Rock My World". They will most likely use the sick song called "Deeznuzit" featuring Dirty Birdy on Stank's album. Stank produced this track and Birdy sings the hook on the song. Dirty Birdy is on about 10 tracks so far and he hopes it will lead into a deal for himself.

Dr. Stanks album was supposed to come out on MCA Records but Stank & the management Sugar Ill have been dropped from MCA Records. This is due to cutbacks and the horrible financial state of the industry. Intercope Pres Jimmy Iovine had been running MCA since the 1st day of the year and is merging some of MCA departments with Interscope, so he got rid of like 80% of the MCA roster. But the Dr. Stank album is finished and its entitled "The Oder". There is no release date but they are still pushing the lead single "Smell Me".

Stank was part of the group "Func Junc" but they are not together anymore, but Stank is cool with everyone. They were signed to Puffys Bad Boy Records but Puffy drug his feet with them and they said Fuck it, but he never even met Puffy so it wasnt anything serious.

As far as his crew goes, its called the Ignorant Crew and the Management Group is Sugar Ill. Lunch is down wit the Ignorant Crew too. They recorded a bunch of underground tracks, one of them was "Lunch Time" along with a Remix which had WC, Lunch, Dr. Stank, Gambit, and J-Walq in it.

Dr. Stank was discovered by WC. Just months after linking with WC, he inked a recording deal with MCA Records. Stank said that WC contacted him after hearing his songs on Power 106.

"Actually Dub heard the songs on the radio. He heard 'Put The Stank In It.' He reached out to Felli Fel because at the time, Felli Fel was playing it on the radio, as well as 'Crackalackin'.' He reached out. Felli gave him my number. He hit me up two days later, we were in the studio. Doing the remix of 'Put The Stank In It.' He did the second verse on it. Laced it up for free. Just for the love of the music."

WC played a big role by discovering Stank, Dub also let him make an appearance on the song "Bang Loose" on W.C.'s album Ghetto Heisman. Hopefully in the long run Stank can help WC too.

Last but not least some audio. Make sure you check those tracks cause they highlight both his Rapping & Producing skills. He's a very talented producer just listen for yourself, he produced a lot of his own songs and has that remarkable West Coast sound. First off his first track that got real big and radio airplay in 2001 called "Whatzcrackalackin". This version is in CDQ, Stank himself produced it.

Nexxt up your first listen to Dr. Stank's first single from his debut album. The song is called "Smell Me" and this track is crazy. Stank himself produced the song and has the classic west coast feel you will love.

Another track from the upcoming Stank album "The Oder" is the song "Dangerous" featuring Butch Cassidy, produced by Damizza.

And here is the collabo with WC, the Remix of "Put The Stank In It" which is Stank produced. The original version is a solo version with only Stank himself. Both versions received radio airplay last year.

Here is a track that Dr. Stank produced by Dirty Birdy called "Everythang I Luv" with female rapper called "Mistress" who is down with Lunch.

Other tracks that he produced are "Khakis N Chronic (Remix)" by Don Cisco & Queenie; "New Shit" by Baby S feat. Jayo Felony from Baby S' album "Street Fractions".

It seems like everything in the IE is going to start blowin up this year, with cats like Dr. Stank, Dirty Birdy, and Sly Boogy puttin out their solo albums. Expect big thangs coming from them!
