news New Jay Rock "112 Bars" Over Pac's "Can't C Me" - By : Nima - February 24, 2009

Time and time again, Watts' Finest Jay Rock has proven to be one of the top prospects rising from the West Coast. Just a few days ago, we leaked his new radio single "I Be On The Block", which is produced by Mr. A Millie, Bangladesh. Incase you missed that, check it out here.

But now it's time for some of that real street music we're used to from Jay Rock. We've just been sent a new song called "112 Bars", on which he raps over 2Pac's classic "Can't C Me" beat for 5 minutes straight. This is probably the most impressive demonstration of skills I've heard from Jay Rock so far.

Towards the end of the track, Jay Rock proceeds to give it up to all of the up and coming West Coast rappers with their name built into his rhymes. Need an example? "Staring at the world from a different view/like my Crooked I do/On my Beach Cruiser as a ride by you/with my Glasses on, shoutout to Malone".

Make sure to check out Jay Rock's 112 Bars below:

A few days ago, dubcnn brought you Damani's brand new mixtape "Congratulations Player", which celebrates the release of his new shoe with adidas. This Saturday, Damani will be holding a release party for the shoe, check out the official press release below:

"When Damani opens his mouth and delivers to listeners his chronicles, his lessons and his flirtatious soliloquies for his female following you understand he is a veteran. He isn't in the game because he aspires to be a rapper. He is in the game because he is a rapper, a fully fledged MC who has paid his dues.

Adidas recognizes authenticity. Because of Damani's true West Coast Roots, adidas chose him as a partner for their off-the-court EQT Basketball Campaign. The result is Damani's exclusive "Congratulations Player" EQT shoe.

For a shoe to carry Damani's name, it can only be of the highest calibar. Damani worked closely with adidas to make sure the shoe would meet a player's highest standards. The shoe stands out in a black/green/red/gold colorway which manages to blend high quality materials with urban style.

The shoe was given the added touch of rapper Damani's logo and the words "Congratulations Player" added to the heel. We would like to invite you to join Damani on February 21,2009 at Millenium sports in Inglewood, CA from 3pm - 6pm. Icon Music Group, the newly formed West Coast company, will be celebrating the release of its first album -- reggae sensation artist, RaSun (Alone Again) -- and have added a whole new element of strength to their already flourishing lineup. Together, The Mayor Productions and Icon Music Group have formed an air-tight entity that is sweeping across the desert like a California wildfire.

Today on Dubcnn, we sit down with The Mayor, who some of you might be familiar with from his own show at Southern California's KRCK Radio Station (a job he just walked away from to focus on Icon Music Group). news Interview With The Real "Freeway" Ricky Ross! - By : Nima - February 12, 2009

Ricky Donnell Ross, better known as "Freeway" Ricky Ross, is known for the drug empire that he presided over in Los Angeles in the early and mid-1980s. He's been behind bars since 1996 and is getting released within the next 50 days.

Today, many people associate the name Rick Ross with the Miami rapper who adopted his name from "Freeway" Ricky Ross. Not only his name, but the rapper Ross, a former correctional officer, took on his whole life story from the former drug kingpin, including the infamous beard.

Dubcnn took the time to talk to the original, "Freeway" Ricky Ross, about his plans after his release, how he is going to be involved in the music game and what he listens to himself. Of course, we talk about the Rick Ross situation, how he feels about the rapper and the fact that he chooses to ignore the man who inspired him.

news Evidence - For Whom the Bell Tolls (Video) - By : LilJay - February 11, 2009

Evidence has just released the video for his joint "For Whom the Bell Tolls" featuring Phonte, Blu and Will.I.Am on the hook. They came up with a simple but dope visual and it fits in very well with the song, which was one of my personal favorites in 2008. This one here is definitely a breath of fresh air. It's good to see Blu making his way up too.

The Khrysis produced song was originally featured on The Layover EP as well as the Layover Mixtape which we offered for free download here on Dubcnn(click if you missed it).

October 2008 was the last time we heard from Gardena native Flixx, who initially burst onto Dubcnn in 2005 with his incredible single Tha Dubb featuring and produced by J. Wells. news Exclusive Interview With Suga T - By : Rud - February 7, 2009

Over the next 10 days we will be releasing interviews that due to technical difficulties with updates before the New Year meant they missed the 2008 cut and have since remained unreleased. First up we have an exclusive interview with Suga T that was conducted in late October 2008.

Years ago Queen Latifah shouted she was a proud woman with her song ‘Ladies First’ and the history of Hip Hop is filled with strong women that fight to survive in a male dominated industry.

Suga T is one of those strong women. You know her from songs like ‘Sprinkle Me’, ‘Captain Save-A-Hoe’ and ‘Hurricane’ and Javon recently hooked up with the beautiful rhyme spitter/entrepreneur to talk about her new project, The Game Needs Me.

No great story can be told with out failure and triumph and Suga T has overcome abusive relationships, failed marriages and alcoholism.

She stands as an example of what we are capable of when we are driven and focused on achieving our goals. Like the rest of her family, this self proclaimed Hip Hop Mom has many business ventures. She tells us how you can soak up some of the valuable game she has to offer.

news U-N-I Talk New Projects; Mixtape For D/L - By : LilJay - February 5, 2009

U-N-I were probably one of the, if not the, fastest rising groups on the West Coast in 2008. The release of "Fried Chicken and Watermelon" and the accompanying video for "Beautiful Day" over a year ago changed it all and took the movement to another level. Their follow up mixtape "Before There Was Love" with Mick Boogie just dropped last week and has been spreading like wildfires. As expected, the Inglewood duo stand their ground and stick to their formula by delivering fresh rhymes over dope beats.

"We're getting a lot of good reviews back home," Y-O told Dubcnn. "A lot of artists in Inglewood give us props and say it's good Hip-Hop, so we must be doing something right. We started recording in the street, so it's great to get that feedback while letting the world know where we coming from."

But even though they just dropped a new joint, U-N-I don't plan to sit around and wait for things to fall in their hands. Their next project, entitled "A Love Supreme", will be their official debut album and it's scheduled to come out next month on March 31st. "We achieved some things, but we wanna further establish what we started so we got a lot more things to do." Thurzday said about U-N-I's current situation. "I think after we release more videos and get a bigger push radio wise, stuff will pick up at a even faster pace. We're just taking advantage of the momentum and keep running. So hopefully with "A Love Supreme", they will welcome us into that next level."

Thurzday and Y-O, who met in high school back in 99, hit the scene with the intention to bring back a innovative and refreshing sound that's been missing on the West Coast. A sound that reflects the daily life that they live, by focusing more on the fun and stylish side of Hip-Hop. "It's still authentic," Y-O stated. "but it represents more of a common individual, because not everybody's into the L.A. gang life. Ain't nothing wrong with that though, I mean I grew up to some of it and I still see it everyday, but that's not us and not what we represent. We're not gangsters, just fashionable cats that like to have fun and be witty with the lyrics. It's a different style and we wanna show the world that you can't put everybody on the West Coast in the same box. So us breaking outside of that box is definitely part of the reason why we're getting that much buzz. It seems to work so we wanna keep that going."

With the next project in line, they're looking to follow that lane and keep riding their own wave in the L.A. Hip-Hop scene. You can expect some minor changes, one being the production as they linked up with Ro Blvd to produce the entire project after developing a working chemistry on previous collabos. "People already got a taste from us, but "A Love Supreme" is gonna be a little bit different again sound wise" Thurzday continued. "It's gonna be more progressive, partly because it's all produced by Ro Blvd. The closest thing I heard to it was some of the Outkast material. It's still U-N-I and it's still Hip-Hop, but we're trying to expand our fanbase and give them more than just what they think we are."

If for some reason you still haven't heard or downloaded the "Before There Was Love" mixtape, you should do that by clicking on the link below.

U-N-I - Before There Was Love (Mixtape)

Shouts out to 2db for holding down the U-N-I movement, and of course to Thurzday and Y-O for leading it.

news Beats By The Bay Want Kids To "Stay In School" - By : Rud - February 5, 2009

The San Francisco Bay Area, known for its independent rappers and its problems with inner city youth dropping out of school, teams the two together to help ease the financial burden of the school system.

Rappers have joined together to make a CD for the purpose of generating revenue to be donated for much needed materials and canceled programs in our schools. This grass roots effort will help give optimism where limited hope exists as seen by our current dropout rate.

Kontac, a Bay Area rapper who was in part responsible for the film Beats by the Bay which featured MC Hammer, E-40 and Too Short is now embarking upon another project geared to help children stay in school. As a native of Richmond California he has seen his elementary and high-school friends drop out of school on a yearly basis. Kontac states; "In a lot of cases, my friends have died on the streets looking for a way out. This problem is now at epidemic proportions with 41% of blacks and latinos in the innercities having not completed the 12th grade. These 2006 stats fluxuate from city to city, but The Bay Area has been hit hard with this educational dilemma. Systemic education disparities, decreasing educational budgets, termination of after school
programs, crime and drugs all play key parts in influencing students to drop out of school."

The album is called "All Rap Aint Bad" and features the single "Stay In School" presented by Beats By The Bay and B.A.R.C (Bay Area Rappers Care) and features Keak Da Sneak, Jacka, Erase E, Mugzi, E-40, Hoodstarz, Federation and Mac N AK with production from Cholly J and Suga Kane. As the single is for profit we have been given a remix of the track for download and stream which you can hear below. To watch the video for the original click here.

Beats By The Bay - Stay In School (Remix) (Feat. Keak Da Sneak, Jacka, Erase E, Mugzi, E-40, Hoodstarz, Federation and Mac N AK)

The profits of the single will help generate funding for eight schools in the region and will benefit their terminated programs and supplies. Much needed books, physical education Items, training tools will be purchased and programs will be reinstated. Kontac says; "I now have kids myself and even as a teacher, I see the problem first hand. With the help of these concerned rappers and this music, we can set new goals and once again be optimistic about our educational goals."

Records stores around the Bay Area have joined in these efforts by stocking their shelves with the product. Radio station have also jumped on board by adding the song to the playlist and extending air time to this self-help educational campaign.

We urge you to support this project when it is released later this quarter via SMC/Fontana/Beats-By-The-Bay. Expect to see appearances from E-40, Jacka, San Quinn, Keak Da Sneak, Mac N AK, Erase E, Dem Hoodstarz, Coolio Da Underdogg, Young M.C., Flava Flav, Ice-T, Havikk (S.S.C.), Chyna White, Mistah Fab, Glasses Malone, Black C (R.B.L.), Yukmouth, Eddie Projex, Laroo, AP.9, Smigg Dirtee, Dru Down, Lee Majors, S.B.(U.N.L.V.), Ad Kapone (Totally Insane), Cellski, Mugzi, Battle Loco and more.
