Japanese magazine company Enterbrain has revealed that 88,400 PlayStation 3 consoles have been sold at the Japanese launch.

Enterbrain, the company responsible for Japanese magazine Famitsu, has revealed that the launch sales of the PS3 are approximately 88,400 units. This number is less that Sony's 100,000 launch target, but ahead of pre-launch estimates.

With such a low launch allocation, software sales were never going to be massive, but Ridge Racer 7 and Gundam: Target in Sight both managed 30,000 units.

With all the launch allocation of consoles snapped up, 'used' consoles are now being sold for much more than retail prices. Eurogamer reports that one London-based importer is offering the PS3, complete with five launch titles, for £1500.

With the 400,000 launch allocation in North America expected to sell out just as quickly, these high import and 'used' prices are expected to remain for some time. Even those living in a territory where the system has launched might have to pay well over the odds for a PS3, with eBay the likeliest port of call.

just got word that 100 PS3s bought from japan are making their way thru customs in india...i'm using every bit of will power i have not to order one of those...couple of stores are taking orders @ Rs 30,000 = $664

yup ,i can see myself getting one then if theres a price cut and some solid games out for the system,its just right now theres not a game that makes me WANT the system, MGS4 however looks amazing,doesnt come out till fall/winter 07 though
