Nas Lashes Out At NYPD After Fatal Shooting
« on: December 05, 2006, 06:45:49 AM »
Queens native Nas has joined upstart rapper Papoose in speaking out against the New York Police Department after their controversial 50-shot barrage that left one man dead and two others wounded early Sunday morning in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, New York.

The trio of men were leaving a club when the driver, Sean Bell, 23, struck an unmarked police vehicle and then backed into a storefront before charging forward again — almost striking an undercover cop — and crashing into the vehicle once more, according to reports.

NYPD officials proceeded to fire 50 rounds of bullets into the car, a late-model Nissan Altima. The unarmed Bell, who was to be married later that day, was killed instantly, and his two passengers were both injured, one critically. Authorities claimed a fourth passenger was present at the time and in possession of a firearm. At press time, however, police were still investigating the matter and so far have questioned two men about their whereabouts that night.

Nas called the 50-shot act cowardly and was dismayed by the controversial incident, which he likened to a display of gangster behavior.

"The one who reloaded should go before the judge and plead guilty," the rapper said in a statement released to MTV News referring to the detective who took 31 of the shots and reloaded his weapon during the incident. "If he was a man, he would be brave enough to face the charges as a man. ... This brutality bullsh-- is played out with that slave sh--. It has to end now. The cops need to be charged the way gangsters are charged."

Nas, along with NBA player Chris Webber, stepped forward to contribute to Bell's funeral costs, but according to Webber's publicist, Tiaka Hurst, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has already made arrangements to cover the wake. Hurst told the New York Post that instead, Nas and Webber would both provide financial assistance to Bell's fiancee and the couple's two children. No amount was disclosed.

Earlier this week, Papoose debuted "50 Shots" on DJ Kay Slay's satellite radio show. The mixtape-style track addresses police brutality and what he sees as the unjustified murders committed by the NYPD in the black community. In the song, the rapper compared Bell's death to that of Amadou Diallo, the immigrant Bronx resident who was gunned down in 1999 by 41 shots after police mistook Diallo's wallet for a gun.

If these guys weren't cops and were just a bunch of gangsters none of these hypocrite rappers would have said shit. And if it were thugs from their area they'd write a song about it praising them and pretending like they were part of it.

From what I understand, according to wikipedia (correct me if I'm wrong), Sean Bell and his friends weren't model citizens and Joseph Guzman was heard by undercover cops in the club threatening a girl saying he would get his gun. The men then proceeded to their car where they were instructed to put their hands up, but Bell continued to drive and hit a cop and a police van. Then the shots started flying. But people in the media mention it like he was just some man in his car going to his wedding and cops fired for no reason. It's like Rodney King, no one remembers that he was going 100 miles an hour for like 10 minutes before he got beat down. He could have killed people. All of a sudden he's a hero because he's black. There are plenty of innocent black men in the world that get mistreated by the police. Why rally around the guilty ones?

Nas needs to STFU and jump on a potential remix for 50 shots (Change gone come).
And of course mention his upcoming LP in a bi-sentence, like out of the blue.. he needs the promotion now.

What I would like to see:

Papoose feat. Nas, Jay-Z, Styles P., Black Thought, Saigon, Pharoahe Monch - 50 Shots Remix

are you fuckin kidding me Rodney King was going 100 mph yes but was it neccessary to have a group of cops beatin him down. the problem is the way police handle situations with black people as if they are animals. And if you cant realize that the whole Sean bell situation was fucked up which it is pretty clear then your fuckin retarted

Rodney king was a known felon who beat his wife and robbed stores while assaulting the clerks. He could have killed someone in that run. He then taunted officers and refused to comply with orders. Did the police go too far? Sure, but there were other black men in the car with him and they weren't attacked at all. If King had hit a kid and killed her I doubt you'd be so sympathetic, and if that kid was your sister or daughter you'd probably be cheering while he was getting beat. 52 people died in the King riots, and thousands were injured. And for what, for some retard to get 4 million dollars and waste his life high on PCP while beating more of his wives and girlfriends?

No one ever seems to mention police brutality when it's a white victim and many whites have died unlawfully by police. Sean Bell could have just put his hands up and gotten out of the car. Being a cop is a tough job and while everyone always seems to bring up the sociological reasons black males in the ghetto act out, no one ever seems to realize that the environment cops are in leads them to act out as well. Either condemn both sides or give both the excuse. You can't pick and choose what you want to defend.

youre an absolute idiot. rodney kind didnt kill a kid, so theres no reason to hate him for that. one reason people were so upset was that he got his ass beaten in fir no legitimate reason and then the racist cops got acquitted. are you that dense? sure, he was speeding well over the limit for a period of time, but that doesnt warrant assault from multiple officers. I guarantee you there hasnt recently been a white beat up like rodney king, or shot up like amadou diallou because police thought his wallet was a gun. you say that the environments cops are in lead them to lead a certain way; its called racial profiling. they go into the hood, see a bunch of black guys, and their trigger fingers get a little excited. sad but true. only condemn where condemnation is due. if bell really did drive his care into a store window and nearly hit an officer while resisting and not while trying to escape the gunshots, then he deserves blame. i highly doubt that is the case. any way you look at it, the cops deserve punishment. they deserve to be kicked off of the force and put into jail for manslaughter. that obviously wont happen because theyre cops, and even when you dump 31 unlawful shots into an unarmed man, nothing substantial seems to happen to most cops in these scenarios. I will be surprised if any of them do hard time, which they should. but thats life. unfair life, but life.

People crack me up Im not sayin Rodny King was innocent but god damn did u see the fuckin video. The way the police handle situtations with blacks is totally different from whites. And  obviously you dont know the whole Sean Bell story. so oblivious but it is okay cuz I would be to if the system worked in my favor.

The child being hit was a hypothetical situation about people who would not care what happened if someone were hurt. King refused arrest. He rushed an officer. He kept getting back up after tazed. And he was a felon. To compare him to Diallou is absurd.

Now Carl Williams better fits the Rodney King comparison and take a look at him;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Carl-Williams-Supplied.jpg

"Indeed, high-round shooting has been a perennial problem in Los Angeles, Denver and other cities. Last June, six Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies fired more than 50 shots into the car in which drunken driving suspect Carl Williams was driving, after his car rammed a police vehicle following a chase. One deputy fired so many shots that he had to reload his weapon during the incident."

http://www.abcnews.go.com/US/LegalCenter/story?id=2681947&page=1

That was June 2005.

bro... im from NY and it didnt happen like that.  And if you lived in NY to see how the NYPD treats all people in general you would agree.  They treat white people like shit, just imagine how bad that treat black people.  Everything that is coming out of the cops side is bull shit.  The cop approached him with his piece out and didnt identify himself as a cop.  Thats when sean bell hit the other cars b/c he saw someone come with his piece and he was trying to get out of there.  Thats when shots popped off.  And c'mon explain to me how 50 shots is justified.  One cop almost popped off 2 clips.

I'm not justifying what they did or how they did it. The police system in general is a joke; Underpaid, under-educated, angry assholes. I'm just saying if it was the girl's (the one that Bell's friend harassed) pimp that came out and busted 50 shots, all he'd get out of it would be a successful rap career if he wanted and a bunch of clowns on the forum calling him as real as they come. The one's that wouldn't condone his actions in general would look for a way to blame the system. "It's not his fault; the white man put him in a position in life where he didn't have a choice". I'm a half and half guy with both sides of the streets. Cops who act as such should be kicked off the force but the police, prison, and judicial systems should all be looked at very carefully because something is wrong in all three. The cops suffer the most from that side of the system because they have to be out there in the streets, working in fear, with the product of those second rate systems; the criminals. And on the street side you have welfare states creating government dependency, the inability to progress, and a lack of care for the community. You also get this bullshit "no snitches" state of mind that corrupts the good people on the street from coming forward because of fear and they get shunned by the community. In Greece you get shunned if you don't testify, because the whole community sees you as the reason a violent criminal walks among us. And because of that street level crime is way down, and has been for a long time. Then you have this top down school system that’s more afraid of a lawsuit than a student throwing their life away, coupled with the fact that most parents now view teachers as enemies and obstacles rather than important figures in the raising of their child. And unfortunately the black community suffers the most from all this. They are the most likely to be harassed and mistreated by the police (the fact everyone brings up with out hesitation), and they are the most likely to commit a street level crime (the fact everyone knows but won't say publicly). To end this both sides of the system need to be attacked at the same time. Anyone that thinks all we need to do is fix the "white" side of things is as stupid as those that think all we need to do is get rid of black people.
