Dr Dre sampled so much music so I wouldnt say he invented anything.

so did every dope producer for the most part but I think you know well as i know that dre has made plenty of shit from scratch.

isn't the next episode one of the only samples on 2001? and alot of his production for other people's records are completely sample free.

I'd say a tie between Big Hutch and Dr. Dre.

So youre saying that the actual rap producers had more to do with creating the sound than Zapp, Clinton, P-Funk, etc.?

well yeah, cause that shit is P funk. G funk is taking p funk, tightening up the instrumentation, looping the best catchiest part of a funk song, adding smooth gangster shit to it. no doubt g funk is built on a foundation of p funk but george clinton did not create g funk. he created p funk.

i see what you're saying, but saying clinton invented g funk is like saying the dude that invented the blues invented rock and roll..it's like yeah, rock n roll certainly owes the blues the debt but that doesn't make the creator the same.

hah, yousa cool cat, we're debating in like 3 threads simultaneously.

True, well u got alot of knowledge on this rap shit, and you present your arguments well.

I guess you do have to say Dre was the "inventor", meaning that he updated the P-Funk sound and gave it a name basically. I thought the Blood guy meant where it came from, or where it originated at.

he may have, you may be right in that respect. and i heard that ATL were the first people to use the term G Funk like on some song with 2pac or something? but atl were working with dre anyway so it very well could have been his term

My feelin is Dre makes the music his own by sampling a bunch of shit. He makes it basically new music.

I think Hutch and Dre. I def think Hutch had as much of a role as Dre in creating it at least. P-Funk laid down the funk for hip hop guys to continue.

Dont get it twisted though, like Tangent said FUNK has generally been a foundation of rap music since it started. From Rap-A-Lot, to EPMD, to Digital Underground, to Sir Jinx to Dre/Warren. Hell for the longest the East held a crown for funk samples because they've been flippin' em way before the Westcoast got on the scene. However Westcoast producers flipped it and revolutionized it into its own popular sound. I wouldnt say Dre invented anything. Nor did Zapp/Parliament/Bootsy, just laced origins.

I think everything else needing to be said already was, I just wanted to throw that in.

And I wouldn't take any thing away from Dre just because he samples. Some producers abuse it, but Dre literally turned it into his OWN sound and style.

I'm going to tale the easy way out and say Ruthless Records.

Tanj, 2001 actually had quite a few samples.

yeah I suppose 2001 did have a bunch of samples but isn't it crazy that he could sample a bunch of different shit but still contextualize it all so cohesively? I think he does alot of assimilation with his work. what the west brought to the funk was the live instrumentation. east just sampled. dre reinstrumentated

i think dre certanly started the g-funk i allways felt like d.o.c let the bass go was some of dres  early g-funk sound but thats just me but the g-funk definetly started in the ruthless days as we know dre took it to the next level on his album the chronic witch to me was basically a break beat records because almost every track was a sample but thats where the g-funk gets it sound. and all of dres hits from the dr era all came from a sample nevertheless dre is one of the best producers in the game today and the music he makes is top notch!

"Alwayz Into Somethin" was one of the first G-Funk records I ever heard so I'm gonna say Dre back in '91
