C-Style's 19th Street LBC compilation is RIDICULOUS
« on: April 26, 2007, 05:32:16 AM »
This is basically an appreciation thread, because I haven't noticed this album mentioned many times on here before.

In a brief summary, this CD is bananas - a near-perfect example of late 90s West Coast funk. The production is, without exception, first class. Nearly all the rappers tear up the tracks, especially Crooked I, as it probably goes without saying. But Lil' Tip too kills pretty much every verse he spits.

It reminds me a lot of "Dogg Food" in that's it's gangsta rap, G-funk but still very lyrical - I'm surprised there was no feature from Kurupt here, because he would have fit in very well with the overall vibe.

A few highlights:

"Success Before I Die": Dave Knight's beat is ideal West Coast music - beautiful synths, keyboards and vibes. Perfect for the summer.

"Jackin' For Flows": LT Hutton flips the sample made famous by Tribe's "Check The Rhyme" into something that sounds like East Coast G-funk, if that's even possible. I love the way every rapper starts their verse with a famous rap line. The Kurupt vocal sample for the hook ("The night I served 2,000 MCs") is sick.

"Gangsta Gangsta": This beat is just stupidly hot. Again, would have sat on "Dogg Food" perfectly.

"Flossin'": The way they flip the bass line to "Who Got Some Gangsta Shit" when Lil' C-Style comes in is crazy - I love it.

Thoughts? Anyone agree? Disagree?

I love this disc - banging all the way through, funky beats plus some great verses from Crooked, Tray Dee, Lil Tip and so on

Yeah I still play it from time to time. Crooked I absolutely murdered this compilation from start to finish.

Probably the favourite CD in my collection.
I try to not bump it often, (once, twice a year), so I keep the appreciation so high.

I gotta go for "Watchin' You Watchin' Me" as my favourite track.

LT Hutton outdid himself BIGGTIME on this one, and basically gave us the beat of a lifelife with that second track. Love that beat.

But I agree. A lot of banging lyrics and beats on this one (plus Crooked I killed it....he reminds me of Tray Deee on this one. Oh and this is the only stuff from Crook I have ever liked). Perfect example of a west coast record.

Proof that there's a great 90s g funk album without snoop, dre, quik or warren.

The best tracks on here are by rappers I'd never heard of before

"Stay Out Of LA" is a dope Track. "Success Before I Die" could be a Track for the LBC Crew Album. It's a pitty that no one wants to release these classic tracks in good quality. man, the sound is incredible.

C-Style got an other Project out there called "Straight Outta Cali". Solid Compilation

I don't live for the man, but I do study him so I can hope my pimp hands one day become as strong as his. When i first started listening to him, my hands were only strong enough to crush a beetle.  Now that i've studied him for 15 years, my hands are strong enough to crush a dog.
