43 and still playing... steroids will do the trick.

It's not like he's playing Rugby. You can play baseball for years after you get old so so long as you can see the ball.

That's probably because all the steroids over the years break the body down in the 40s. It makes them not as good but you can still compete as a DH if you are a great hitter. Satchel Paige was pitcing a 2.4 era with ten win seasons into his 50s. I'd like to see anyother sport produce that kind of performance from a 50 year old.

When I was typing my reply I KNEW you would bring up one one of the most extreme cases in all of sports with Paige.  And it seemed like Gordie Howe played Hockey forever.  And Stachel Paige never pitched in the Major Leagues into his 50's with a 2.4 ERA and 10 wins a season.  He pitched from 41-46 as a reliever and had some nice seasons.  Then in 1965 he pitches 3 innings at 58 as a publicity stunt.  And before steroids became rampant in sports how come we didnt see any DH's playing well into there 50's ?  The DH came into play in 1973 so how come we dont see any DH's playing well into there 50's and still being a productive ball player ?

1. Paige was playing in the Negro Leagues in the 1950s and they were still a solid league at that time. So was the Tiple A League in the year I mentioned his stats.

2. I never said a player could be as good at 50 as he ever was. I said you can still play competitive ball as a batter. The reason why you won't see it happen is because it's pointless to keep on a guy that old and most wouldn't want to play. By that time they've stacked up enough cash and the ones that haven't are duds to begin with. Factor in the slower base-running and there you have it. It also has to do with the marquee of the player. Barry Bonds will be welcome somewhere in the MLB as long as he can make contact because he'll be worth more money than the worst DH in the league.

3. The steroids thing was more a little nudge at 7even.

4. If Chris Chelios can play top level hockey at 45 I don't see how Barry Bonds couldn't at least compete as a DH at 50. People under-esitmate the body of a man in his 50s. Ric Flair did more with and to his body at 55 years old in pro wrestling htan most 25 year old baseball players ever do. There just isn't any point in having a 50 year old do what a 21 year old can do unless the money is there.
