Got the game at midnight, and have been playing it since. Just playing through the campaign right now and even then I can say the game definately lives up to the hype.

Online is amazing as well. Anyone who gives this game a 8.8 must be mentally retarded.

I think Americans put a lot more stock into online multiplayer than other regions do, hence the higher scores there.

I haven't personally played Halo 3, but I played the first one a lot and never saw what was so special about it. As Halo 3 has basically been described as a slightly refined version of 1 and 2, I fail to see that my own opinion could be swayed that much. Not owning a 360, its unlikely I will ever try it out though.

The multiplayer side has always suprised me with the success it had, because its essentially a game of run and gun in a team format (I accept there is skill involved at the highest level). If you're after run and gun, any Unreal Tournament game strikes me as a better option.

In general though, the FPS genre has always been much of a muchness to me. Compared to the majority of games in other genres coming out of Japan, US developed FPS' have always failed horribly in the art direction department and the success of these games is one of the main reasons behind a lot of drab looking, "brown" games that seem to have come into fashion in recent years.

Therefore, the FPS genre has become typical of gaming in general these days, with a distinct lack of fresh ideas or innovations The success of Halo 3 just continues this horrible trend of good sales for dull, uninspiring games, most of which seem to have found a home on the 360.
