When did swagger become more important then actual lyrics, flow, content, mic presence, word play, pretty much everything that makes a dope emcee.  When did it become the only thing to matter.  The best emcees of all time never had to brag about swagger.  They just had it and you thought that just from the way they tore up a mic.  From the likes of Rakim, Slick Rick, Big, Big L, Nas, Jay, Pac, Big Daddy Kane, Pun, Ghostface, Snoop and I hate Snoop.  Now those cats had swag just based solely on how they spit on the mic.  Now a days you kids are more concerned with how a rapper dresses and walks.  And what he says in a interview and you consider that swagger.  In actuality those are some of the traits women look for when trying to meet a guy.

The thing is though just a few years ago majority of so called swagger was determined by skill.  And no one really discussed it like they do now.  It was just a given.  And when discussing the best in the game it was never mentioned in the same light as basic skills.  When you discussing the best in the game you would give your reason that were mostly about skill and once in a while you would say something like and he carries himself in a way.  Now a days its he's ight but yoooooooooo he's got crazy swag.  AWWWWWWWW MAN HIS SWAG IS CRAZY.

in my book, swag isnt dressing like a fruitcup and talkin about how dope you are. it might not make sense to some of you, but i was talkin to bundy about it a little while ago: if you attack the mic, and have some energy and a sense of confidence in your delivery, then youve got swag, and thats engaging and interesting to listen to. unless im feeling really focused, ill take a lyrically good but not amazing rapper who has swag over some monotonous, lycially crazy backpack rapper who just raps about how his mindstate is illogical-philosophical-ostical. ya dig? and to anyone who says 'swagger' is a new thing in today's mainstream that fucks up the music, its been around since rap music was invented. afrika bambaataa had swag out the fuckin roof. ll cool j has always had swag. melle mel had swag. peace
