Snoop And The Crew Talk By Chuck 'Jigsaw' Creekmur, BET.Com Staff Writer Posted Nov. 1, 2002-- In the recent past, Snoop Dogg has undergone a dramatic metamorphosis, a dramatic departure from the weed-smoking, Crip-walking murder suspect of the early to mid-90s. And although the rapper has gone from taking part in porno movies to verbally jousting with Suge Knight, he said he is most concerned with revamping his image from gangsta to CEO. In summer the rapper dropped Welcome To Tha House Vol. 1, which included an extensive roster of artists, and is currently working on Paid Da Cost To Be Da Boss, the album that will represent his complete transformation. Snoop says his last CD, The Last Meal, meant nobody will eat off him again, but Da Cost, adopted from an antiquated James Brown record, means liberation. "I'm checking all you suckas that deserve to be checked and I ain't dealing with no more underbosses," he states aggressively. With no production from former mentor Dr. Dre, Snoop says Da Cost will feature a completely overhauled sonic backdrop with more variety than ever in his career."The first single is produced by The Neptunes, called 'From The Church To The Palace,'" he says with a hint of anticipation. "I got production from Hi-Tek, DJ Premier, Battlecat, E-Swift -- it's going down jack, you can believe that. I got a couple of new producers. I'm just doing the most from the coast," "Da Boss," as the 30 year old now deems himself, has been performing spot dates throughout the nation supporting his artists, The All-Stars like E-White, Bad Azz, Soopafly, LaToiya, Bigg Uncle June Bugg and others. As expected, the All-Stars have a very different view of Snoop from dissented parties like Bill O'Reilly and Chicago's Project Islamic Hope, both of whom spoke out against the rapper's appearance on "A Very Special Muppet X-mas Special."Rapper and funky crooner, Mr. Kane has been party to several hip-hop dynasties over his longstanding career and he says Snoop is the best boss he has had thus far."I had a chance to be with Eazy-E, Ruthless [Records] and I've seen a lot of empires, but out of Master P, Eazy-E, [Snoop] is the coolest, realest person you ever want to be with, he says with an almost proud demeanor. And contradicting drastically, the notion of Snoop as a pariah to normal society, Uncle Rico, Doggy Style Records resident gospel singer (yes, gospel singer), says the budding CEO is "a role model for all."Normally seen dancing or making humorous wisecracks, Uncle June Bugg says his nephew's decision to move forward from his gangsta mantra will ensure his success. "The Bible says a wise man will change and a fool never will," he says, "Snoop is making that change and it's going to help him become a huge success when he does business."This fall, Snoop relaunched his clothing line, also the subject of protests after being sold in Macy's department stores, with a fresh, vibrant new look. He admits the line hasn't flourished, but is bent on making it fashionable. "The first two times we came with it, it really didn't hit too well. But on its third season, we plan on doing big things with it," he says.//what's the line called?//Snoop also says his company is developing a children's line of clothing, dubbed Lil' Snoop Dogg, and another that will cater to the females, Angel Wear. Incidentally, Snoop's own wife, Shante Taylor, whom he calls a walking "fashion statement," will head up the ladies' line.Although he is expanding his empire, music, spirituality and family are his primary concerns and the rapper even has a spiritual advisor in Bishop Don Juan, a pimp-turned-preacher, who helped convince him to change his life. "You going to need that type of person. So that's something I appreciate in him," he says of the minister. "He's putting God in my life -- even though he's never left my life, but he's helped me to be more about it and not to be ashamed."The All-Stars completely support "Da Boss," even though some of them still party and engage in other illicit activities like smoking marijuana and sippin' gin-n-juice. They remain a firm unit, despite their motley crew status."A family that prays together stays together. Any house without the good Master [God], don't work. We come together a team," said Uncle Rico. And likewise, Snoop says he is indelibly loyal to his family, friends and artists and that, indeed, moves his business endeavors and maturing spirit. "They all need me. They depend on me. I move the game," Snoop finishes. "The game is terrible without me."
