Exclusive Dubcnn Interview With Big Hutch - By : Jonathan - June 8, 2010

With so many people talking about the upcoming Hood Star release from WIDEawake/Death Row Records, we had to get some insight from the man who basically started this whole album from the very beginning.

Dubcnn sat down with the legendary Big Hutch aka Cold 187um from Above the Law who was once the VP of Death Row Records and who was also very influential in bringing Crooked I to the label and overseeing this Hood Star project.

In this exclusive interview, Big Hutch talks about everything Hood Star and the beginning of Crooked I. He also gives his opinion on WIDEawake/Death Row – a company he once helped run.

Nice to see someone from the hip hop side of things defending WideAwake. I kind of get what he's saying as far as the music being made to be put out there for the public and the world deserving to hear it. So I think the music has the right to be released (even though the songs have already leaked lol, but that's another topic). But I also see Crooked I's perspective, as being at a different point in his career and not wanting to bring up his past. from So while I think they have the right to put this music out, I don't think they have the right to bill it as an official Crooked I album. That's just being disrespectful to the artist since he's not involved with its release. The responsible thing would be to call it a compilation of Crooked I tracks and sell it as such, like they did with the Dre and Snoop releases.

On a related note, Crooked I was a lying ass motherfucker back in the day for all the bragging he did about owning his own publishing

Thanx for the interview. My  problem with this release is that tracklist is shitty, Crooked has so much better material there...Bang On Em, Crook Show, Jack 101, Raw Dawgs, Middle Finger Music....they should have put that on the album.

big hutch is a underated hip hop legend, so its nice to hear what he has to say about this type of stuff, everybody is entiltled to there opinon and i can see where he's coming from, its a free world

but i'm from a point of view of aswell, that if the artist whose album there releasing ain't happy about it, then they should take that into consideration and make sure there giving the said artist there proper dues, financially, if you get my point, if they decide to release it, compensate the artist properly and accordinly, thats all i'm saying

also from a purely customers point of view, so long as they put out older material the way it was supposed to come out witout the remixes or adding artists that wern't on it originally, like 2 pac albums after his death, then i don't have a problem wit it, from a strictly 100% fan point of view too, you see what i'm saying
"get this money by any means nessassary"

Doesn't publishing only cover his Name??? Snoop Dogg didn't so he had to shorten it. Rights to the Masterers is something else  I think.

Publishings has nothing to do with a name. That's something entirely different. Snoop shortened his name for convenience. Owning your own publishings means the music copyrights belong to you.

Dubcnn loses credibility by not asking who chose the tracklist.  Hutch has to know 14 of the 15 songs were already available to the people who they want to buy the CD.

Why would we ask Hutch who chose the tracklisting, when we already know Death Row did...

The real reason Crooked I is upset is because:

1) Detox may possibly comeout (if it ever drops, it will be within the next 12 months) and he doesn't want the diss tracks with Snoop surfacing through people interested in his older work.  Then Snoop/Dre hear the music and say keep him out of our business even if the disses were a decade old.  Dre has still blocked Daz out of his music and it's 2010.

2) He's bitter towards Death Row.  At the end of the day, he dedicated his career to the label, and for whatever reason, he couldn't deliver packageable music (catchy club music like "California Love") to the type of crowd Tha Row aims to sell records to and Suge never gave him, top dogg, soopafly, or realest a chance because of other albums flopping due to mainstream emphasis on east coast in early 2001.  The "So Damn Hood" single also didn't catch on the radio like it should've.  Suge aimed for all his releases to sell millions and anything below platinum was considered below expectations on tha row.

3) People are going to look at it as his debut whether he likes it or not.  And in my opinion, it's a great collection of work so why not be happy.  He can't keep fans waiting any longer, it's been more than 12 years and no album.  Now fans will have something tangible that's a collection of tracks with a theme like Big hutch was saying.

4) People are going to compare it to his new work.  The consensus in the polls is that about 60% prefer his Death Row music to his newer music.  He will always have to deal with comparisons regardless, but this just gives a specific piece of work to point to when people are comparing his work.

lol, people really prefer his older shit? It's generic ass gangsta rap at its finest. It's not surprising he never blew up, considering he was doing Kurupt-type shit that was already played out.
