i use to think pac was a lil over rated... but the considering the small amount of good music that has came out since his passing, i would say "no" now. but he also was the biggest transformer in game....

What is happening to this forum these days? First of all, one guy says Biggie is no better than Rick Ross, then we have someone else suggesting one of hip-hop (or even music)'s most loved figures was overrated. The guy released a steady stream of great albums from his Digital Underground days all the way up until his passing.

Sometimes I think on here people make up thread titles they know will get replies without thinking of the stupidity of what they're typing.

In what way did i suggest that Tupac was over rated in my first post? In case you didn't know, a question is much different than a suggestion.

Tupac is only overrated when you reflects on his stans riding and dying for him.  Beyond that he put in the work and reaped what he sowed (positively and negatively).  If anything I think the new generation is forgetting about him and have been influenced by Jay-Z or Nas more than Pac.

I don't see nobody alive whos better than him. He had it all.

Seriously though, as much as pac is my nigga and all, im going through a biggie phase right about now but in terms of pac being overrated, not really, its because of what cats at interscope and maybe the work people like eminem have done to pacs name which may make people think twice about dude or if u knew to hiphop but regardless of time or whatever hiphop phase u come from, pac is amazing.

Asking this question in here is about as worthwhile as asking if Eminem is overrated at a D-12 concert. This subject has come up like a million times before and really hasn't brought that much in terms of interesting conversation. Tupac Shakur was undoubtly one of the very best artists that mainstream hip-hop music has ever had but that being said, the volume of people who seem to think that everything he does is perfect and that it's blasphemy to think otherwise is ridicilous. He's an interesting figure because on the one hand, he introduced a lot of ideas to hip-hop audiences that they may not ever have thought about or accepted if another voice had spoken on them but they also seemed to accept his take on these issues as "gospel" rather than attempting to expand their knowledge on these issues. I think in the wake of his death, a lot of super-fans started running around with these romanticized notions of a person they never met based on his interviews and music. I mean, the guy was a tremendously compelling speaker but sometimes, it's like people are so caught up in the extra shit that it turns into something else.

"Pac was the truest and most real". Well, how do we know this? And furthermore, why is it neccesary for great art to be a reflection of reality? I'd suggest it's less about the actual reality of it but more the perceived reality and how the listener relates to it. It's not about who is the most honest but whose story speaks most directly to their audience. I mean, if a rapper wrote an album where he said he thought about kissing dudes, hated his old hood, beat and raped women, and was only in music because he loved the money, would he be considered "one of the realest" because he spoke the truth? I think Pac's unique genius wasn't he always told the truth because he didn't. It was that he told stories with a better understanding of the human condition than most and with a level of vunerability.

As far as "overrated", I don't know what to say. It's the Eminem situation where even though I think he's among the all-time most talented in his field, the absurdly-hyperbolic statements made by a large portion of his fan base make me cringe at times. If Ice Cube can be overrated or Biggie or Dr. Dre or Snoop or Nas then why is Pac exempt from the debate?

this.  every time someone asks was tupac overrated some people get butthurt , like itīs a fact  that everyone KNOWS he is the best and realest ever and no one has the right to have an opinion of their own . rap forums turn into North Korea the very minute someone even dares to question Lord Shakurīs Total Awesomeness . for fucks sake....forums are about conversation , right ?

okay, itīs common that internet people think " i know this, this is my opinion so itīs the truth and fuck you for thinking otherwise" but when it comes to 2pac itīs on a whole new level.

of course tupacīs music will live on , so will many other good musicianīs .

i used to listen to pac a lot when i was younger but i never liked his full albums except makaveli. good albums but i usually donīt want to listen to them from the start til the end .

so, overrated ? yeah, because his fans try to make him into a Latter Day Saint ( no mormon ) .

was he good?  yeah , he had some great songs as well as some corny ones but i give him a spin now and then . even some songs i donīt really like that much but the manīs delivery could save some horrible beats - one of the best voices and flows in rap . he was good in what he did .

letīs see how much hate i get for not agreeing with the church of twoopack shakur

His angelic image is over-rated. His click the Outlawz are over-rated. His gangster image is over-rated. Guy was the best at what he done IMO but I'd say he was over-rated in some sense, but not his status
