Anyone who was into rap when Snoop was about to drop knows the answer is Snoop BY FAR!  I mean, he sold almost 900,000 the first week, the highest ever at that point!  Plus, he had already starred on the Chronic and been on a HUGE single, Nuthin But a G thang.  Furthermore, his murder trial and even his name meant that everyone knew about him.......

I would compare the hype about 50 cent right now mabe to that of DMX when he first dropped........peace

snoop by far. the dogg was featured on a bunch of classic hits before he came out with his own album but 50 cent is just a name...he had no big hits

Snoop sold over 800,000 copies his first week, that's the record for a debut album...I think 50 will sell like 500k 1st week, but you have to take into consideration the internet and people downloading albums which you didn't have in 93...So I think it might be close, but hiphop is certainly more universal now than it was in 93, so the numbers Snoop put up were amazing, at atime where rock acts like Pearl Jam and Nirvana were dominating the charts...

Snoop was the most anticipated rapper of all time. 850,000 units in 1993 for your first album was unheard of. Hip Hop wasn't as universal as it was back then. Snoop was everywhere: On MTV, BET, Time, Rollingstone, Newsweek, etc. Remember Eminemania back in 2000? It was Snoop-mania back in '93. Almost every song from Doggystyle got played on the radio even if they weren't singles. It was just banannas!

50 Cent's hype is about the same as DMX's in 1998. Both came out of the street mixtape circuit but X had more mainstream guest appearances. They locked the streets down, I was in New York the summer of '98 and X was everywhere.
