What was the greatest Source mic rating injustice?
« on: February 06, 2003, 11:50:21 AM »
besides the ratings the source went on to correct later on
(2001, doggystyle, chronic etc)

me personally, i still cannot to this day fathom how Balance and Options got 3 mics, i think it is an amazing album
"One day Alice came to a fork in the road and saw a Cheshire cat in a tree. "Which road do I take?" she asked. "Where do you want to go?" was his response. "I don't know," Alice answered. "Then," said the cat, "it doesn't matter."

Good topic.

Im gonna vote for the suga free hate. There is no way this album deserved what it got. It's near classic status in my eyes. For them to do that... Wow... What a bunch of pricks

Warren G - Regulate... G-Funk Era getting 3.5 mics.

I have all the issues from the early 90's and they were hating hard on the West Coast when it came to reviews.

X-Raided getting 2 mics was pretty bad. Im not really a fan of his but that album was at least a 3.

but yea i was shocked at the Balance and Options rating too, even tho Quik himself says its a bad album.

Midnight Marauders should have been in that 150th issue.  It got 4 mics but is an easy 5.

The homie incognito wrote an awesome article on the source titled:

5 Mic Fuck Up

Which pretty much sums it up.
http://www.angelfire.com/ia3/hip-hop-reviewed/editorials/5mics.htm

Beware there are a few pop ups but overall worth the read.

My biggest injustice is giving Biggies Life After Death 5 mics and Jay Z's Blueprint 5.  Alot of people consider those classics but IMO, they only gave Biggie 5 because of his death.  (RIP none the less)

Im also pissed that they never rated 2Pac's - All Eyes On Me.

I dont think it desearved 5 MICS.  If it was only one album of the best songs, maybe!  But that double album (which was only a double in response to 2Pacs double album) had tons of filler tracks and didnt desearve 5 mics.  IMO.  4 would have been just fine.

They said they didn't review AEOM becuase it was not submitted in time.

I think the greatest injustice was giving Made Men 4.5 mics.

ras kass soul on ice gettin 3, deserved at least a 4.5
above the law black mafia life gettin 3.5, deserved at least 4.5 ,maybe even 5
i'll think of more later

Most hip-hop is now keyboard driven, because the majority of hip-hop workstations have loops and patches that enable somebody with marginal skills to put tracks together,...

Unfortunately, most hip-hop artists gravitated towards the path of least resistance by relying on these pre-set patches. As a result, electric guitar and real musicians became devalued, and a lot of hip-hop now sounds the same.

People who are upset with ratings for artists like Suga Free or E-40 should understand that being a fan of them requires an aquired taste.  Personally I can't even listen to one song from either of them, seriously, for me to listen to them they must have a real bangin' beat in the background for me to focus on.
