Is the West still on life support, or is it officially DEAD?
« on: February 16, 2013, 07:38:54 AM »
It's now 2013 and been checkin dubcc since it's inception.  I've noticed a pattern over the years: people rehash and talk about the same west coast shit over and over and over and over again like they ain't got nothing else to talk about.  This leads me to believe that since we're still talking about shit that happened in the 90s, for 13+ years now, maybe it's time to let the West REST IN PEACE.

I mean dam, you look at the topics in this forum and peeps still talking about 2pac- Strictly for my Niggaz, peeps still all got their DPG bootleegs that they covet and hide, still got the same Snoopy and DRE avatars... just leads me to believe the West might really be dead.  I mean Snoop abandoned rap, Dre ditched his album, 2pac's been dead for 15+ years, but we still here acting like the West is gonna make come back, or be big again.

I just checked Billboard top 200 and the only WEST rapper in the top 40, is Kendrick.  And that's a one-off, a fluke... When was the last time a West rapper had a big one?  Dam it's sad to see the west expire ... I was at the Up in Smoke Tour, live, now I ain't got nothing new to even blow smoke too.  EDIT: We got Game, but dam, he ain't nowhere as big as he used to be....

The west was such a giant in the 90s, but it's time to let it die.  It ain't never comin back, REST IN PEACE.

It's a cycle.  Every region gets their chance to shine.  We had ours, and frankly had all of those negative things associated with Death Row not have happened (Dre leaving, Pac getting shot, Suge going to prison, etc.), a lot of East Coast artists who released stuff shortly afterward may not have had the same opportunities that they did since the world was loving West Coast music in general.  Even outside of Death Row, Coolio was big, Too $hort was still doing his thing (remember how hard it was to find the Gettin' It single to the point where you just had to buy the whole album?), Bone Thugs was from Cleveland but they rolled with Eazy and had a lot of West Coast sound behind them, Xzibit was coming up from the underground, etc.

I hear Kendrick all the time on the radio now, and listening to Power 106 yesterday (only because I was driving in my girlfriend's car and couldn't hook up my iPhone), apparently he was/is performing at some 106 concert or something.  He's on songs with Drake... and Drake is a lame but the beats bang, and he puts Kendrick on.  Hopefully Kendrick can put some of his people on (and maybe even bring Jay Rock on too, since he is technically signed to him under TDE) and not end up dick riding Lil Wayne like everyone else who wants to get some radio play has done in the past (*cough* Game *cough*).  Just give it time.

But even outside of mainstream, even battle rap lost most of its West Coast emcees.  A few years ago, the West was rockin the battle circuit, but now, it's mostly just Dizaster from LA and Daylyt from Watts who are making noise, but it's just two versus a whole truckload of emcees from Harlem, another truckload from Brooklyn, another from Queens, Jersey, Philly, etc.  But oddly a lot of the West Coast battle emcees are just regular guys.

Where you been at? Iv'e been saying this for a while now
http://www.dubcnn.com/connect/index.php?topic=294894.0

There are some new rappers dropping quality underground mixtapes with original music. You have too really be open to hearing new shit if you want to hear rappers from the west.
http://www.dubcnn.com/category/audio/mixtapes/

DubCnn does news on them on the main site but not here and so a lot of us who only come to the forum miss out on the news.
If they were crate a topic about it, maybe we would hear more shit about them. Reading your post leads me to belive you hate the radio as I do and also born in the 80's but grew up in the 90's as I did meaning your an old school cat.

If you want to hear some new shit download all these  mixtapes and put them on a playlist, and when your driving listen to them and see waht grows on you like it did to me.

I recomend these for now.

Problem & IamSu – Million Dollar Afro
KRNDN – Everything’s Nothing
Ty Dolla $ign “Beach Hou$e”
Casey Veggies Releases “Life Changes”
YG Drops Free “Jus Re’d Up 2″
Bad Lucc – Breaking Bad
Dom Kennedy & OpM Present: “Young Nation”
Thurz – 517 W Queens Tape
Problem – Welcome To Mollywood 2

Dom Kennedy's Yellow Album really grew on me over the summer and even had a little bit of radio play with "My type of party" so i would deffenately check that one out if you havent already.

west coast rap didn't really die it just went back 2 the underground, let New York or the South have the Radio and TV it's nothing but watered down bullshit anyways. The only 1s affected by the west no pumping out product beyond the local scene are the outta state peoples and mostly the Euros. Doesn't affect me, from what I've seen Oldies, old west rap, older rap in general, and few of the new west cats, are all getting play out here more then the radio stuff. So really I can't say the west is dead least not for me because local people still getting play. The one's who claim the west is dead are just people not living in the west who can't get access to the local albums and stations.  8)

I see what y'all are saying, and I feel you my niggs.  I'm not talking about being regional, that's minor, that's chump change.

The west was once like a mighty battleship that treaded international waters gaining fans everywhere, making snaps, and gettin continental pussy. Now it's like a lil dinky raft that can't go too far from the shores or it will sink.

The forefathers jumped ship or died and ain't no one running the ship, it's sunk.  In that sense... It died.

All this talk about up and comers and the HORSESHOE GANG is again missed.

That is what is wrong with the west, people don't hear quality muzik even if it smacks them in the face. Fuck the mainstream, Demitrious Capone and Julius Luciano are the hottest rappers on the planet right now, and if the radio don't fuck with them, then it's there loss

mainstream wise hip hop as a whole is pretty dead if you are not making pop music like Wayne, Drake and Nicki...

Actually, the West hasn't been as cracking as now since 99-2001 probably.

Kendrick Lamar
Tyga
ScHoolboy Q
Dom Kennedy
Problem
IamSu
Hopsin
Dizzy Wright
E-40
Odd Future
Ab-Soul
Casey Veggies
Pac Div
Clyde Carson

The West hasn't seen this type of diversity and popularity in a long time, definitely not since dubcnn launched.

The only comparison would be Game coming out in '05 but that was all Game-hype, and Hyphy movement was cracking too but limited to the Bay.

Even with that line up (Which is questionable imo) we still aint doing shit in the over all industry. Like I said we holding our region down which is just fine with me, because I couldn't give a fuck what they play on the otherside of the country because I'm not there. The people who want everything to dominate the radio/TV got no life. Fuck The Radio any good track gonna be censored, and TV can eat shit and die because of YouTube.

Rappers stop giving a fuck about BET (not even gonna mention MTV because they don't play shit) long time ago, every video I've seen is uncensored since they started doing that.

Actually, a lot of those artists ARE successful on radio.

Kendrick Lamar has 3 singles in heavy rotation across the country.
Clyde Carson's "Slow Down" was getting HEAVY radio play.
E-40's "Function" was a nationwide hit.
Problem "Like Whaaat" is the biggest club record in LA right now and spinning on Power, buzz is through the roof.
Tyga has been owning the clubs anyway since Rack City.

WORD!! Like the West wasn't lyrical. Just off top, HSG, Locksmith, Mykestro, Kendrick, are lyrically superior to pretty much everyone out. Even Dice Deniro raps circles around most other rappers, let alone gangsta rappers.

Yes, people talk way too much about the glorious past, but I couldn't care less if the West ain't the battleship anymore that it once was. That something to be proud of?

Qualitywise the West is in exellent condition.

i don´t need any medicate shit im 100 normal.
