True and very crazy when you really think about it. Makes you wonder if maybe that beat had anything to do with their beef?

Truth right here. It also showcases how lazy Biggie the artist was considering this track in its entirety is 85% of his posthumous catalogue.

yeah Biggie left behind very little unheard material....no work ethic like Pac or Nas.  if Nas had passed in 1997 there woulda been enough material for several Nas posthumous CD's

it doesn't mean he was lazy. some artists record differently: some artists may record an x amount of tracks for a project and sift through those and pick the best ones like pac did or some artists may record the exact amount of tracks for a project leavin' no leftover tracks at all.

But look at the facts... Biggie was solely a rapper. And during a five-year career, there wasn't a lot to show for it, in terms of finished products.  Yes, the albums were dope and classic (though his death played a big role in Life After Death getting the recognition it got -- even The Source in their 100th issue admitted that it was part of why they gave it five mics), but it's not a lot from someone who is a professional in an industry where you could work all of the time, if you had the drive to do so, as there's nothing that really prevents you from doing more.  And we're not even comparing Biggie to Pac either.

It's nothing against Biggie, I definitely put him in the all-time greats, but for someone who is so revered within the hip-hop community, his studio work ethic was mediocre, outside of his ability to come up with lyrics in his head after listening to the beat several times without really having to write his words down.  But I really have a hard time not ranking Jay-Z ahead of him.

i wouldn't go as far as to say Jay is better than biggie, esp when Jay uses Biggie lines all the time

but his work ethic is easily better

But biggie had put out more material than nas by 1997 biggie had put out ready2die and Life after death which a double album nas only had two single albums illmatic and it was written ready2die had more tracks than illmatic aswell. who cares about leftover tracks im pretty sure biggie didn't plan to die lol

The use of Biggie lines doesn't restrict him from ever passing Biggie.  He's obviously not doing it because he can't think of his own shit... look at his discography... but it's done because they're nods to Biggie, and hip-hop heads will recognize it.  Shit, it's not hard to, when Biggie only recorded maybe four albums' worth of solo material, so it's not like Jay was using some obscure shit to try to pass it off as his own work hoping that people wouldn't recognize it, and it's not as if the Biggie lines he re-used were what made his songs hits anyway.

I'm not a huge Jay-Z fan, but I can at least give him props for being damn near one of the most consistent emcees to ever put out music.  Who else in hip-hop has been putting out albums around as long (give or take) with the same level of success not just commercially but critically?  I tip my hat to him.

But the leftover tracks just show how much they had been working in the studio.  As far as album count by 1997 goes, it's not like artists can release albums whenever they want to, whereas they can go to the studio and record a song if they wanted to.

but Nas had some memorable guest appearances on songs for Raekwon, Mobb Deep, Main Source etc. and he was in the works on the Firm album too.  Plus none of us even knew he did those amazing 2 verses on "Don't Stop" with the Dogg Pound but Death Row was too stupid to release the song.  Nas totally outshines Kurupt on that shit and that was Kurupt in his prime.
