The Biggest 2Pac Fan in Mainstream Rap Today
« on: December 12, 2014, 10:12:14 PM »
Gotta nominate Young Jeezy for this award. This nigga loves Pac and reps him harder than most West Coast rappers today.

I just heard this song the other day and was struck by the chorus:

Listen to that Jeezy chorus and tell me it don't sound like its taken from a Pac verse! Jeezy's southern style is, of course, way different from Pac's style, but it's clear that Pac's influence on Jeezy is deep. The way the words are stressed in the chorus is a CLASSIC Pac trademark.

YG has named Pac in his top five. And mentioned him a few times, particularly in Who Do You Love

Yeah, I find Jeezy's focus on Pac kinda amusing. Like this nigga don't care about no other rappers who came before him. Most rappers pay homage to a variety of their predecessors, but Jeezy really focuses on Pac to the exclusion of all others. You can tell it's a reflection of his real life. In his songs, he talks about playing Pac while having sex, cooking coke, reflecting on life, etc. You know how some people (especially on this forum) are: they mainly listen to one or two rappers and don't connect with anybody else.

YG's not intelligent enough to really love Pac. You need some brains to admire that nigga over everybody else.

Lotta rappers pay homage to Pac by borrowing his rhyme schemes and word stresses here and there. YG definitely does that in Do It To Ya with the line: "and even though it might sound CRAZY, you can fuck around and have my first BABY!"

Jeezy has spoken on interviews about how he loved E-40 and B-Legit. He even named B-Legit in his top 5 lol. He's a big Cube and Warren G fan too. SO he does care about a lot of rappers, especially from the West.

I'd say Freddie Gibbs, although not very mainstream, is up there as well. Curren$y & Crooked I, too. A lot of rappers still ride for 2pac.

Did you ever feel that strongly about an artist?
Of course. Tupac. Master P at his prime. The Big Tymers in their prime. E-40, definitely. B-Legit, Juvenile, B.G. ― these are all the people I came up on and that had input in my life so that I'm able to say the things that I say. Because I really went through that struggle, and I was like, "Man, if I could just get Juvenile to come and see how I kick it…. I got Rolexes too."

Yeah, in his interviews, Jeezy mentions other rappers beside Pac, but in his songs, he references Pac way more than anyone else (both by name and by allusion to Pac lines).

Jeezy also deserves props for being a big DJ Quik fan. If you look at the "Way Too Gone" music video, you can actually see two cameos from Quik (and Warren G). There's a short scene of Quik doing the blood walk on Jeezy's stage there.
