Kendrick Lamar with 5 grammys
« on: February 15, 2016, 05:05:02 PM »
With the 58th GRAMMY Awards among us, we're largely here for Kendrick Lamar. The Compton native lead the pack with 11 nominations, the most important and notable being Rap Album of the Year and Album of the Year for To Pimp A Butterfly. For the most part, the GRAMMYs are little more than a celebration of the top selling music, but every once in a while in the hip-hop world, a commercially successful album IS one of the best albums in the genre.

UPDATE (9:43 p.m.): Kendrick Lamar performed "Alright" and "The Blacker the Berry." The king has risen. You'll catch some bias here, but that was easily the best performance of the night so far. Coming out in shackles, he broke free then performed the songs with a charged up clique behind him. He ended the performance with what we assume is "Untitled 3." Earlier today, we shared Kendrick had a whole bunch of songs that didn't make the cut of To Pimp A Butterfly he wanted to share live, and that was one of them. The production Kendrick and the "prisoners" walked out to was Iman Omari's "Omari's Loop" off High Loops & Higher Loops.

Best Rap Song: Kendrick Lamar's "Alright"
Best Rap Performance: Kendrick Lamar's "Alright"
Best Rap/Sung Collaboration: Kendrick Lamar's "These Walls"
Best Music Video: Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" with Kendrick Lamar
Best R&B Album: D’Angelo and the Vanguard's Black Messiah
Best Urban Contemporary Album: The Weeknd's Beauty Behind The Madness
Best R&B Performance: The Weeknd's "Earned It"
Best Rap Album: Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly
Song of the Year: Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud"
Best Rock Album: Alabama Shakes' Sound & Color
Album of the Year: Taylor Swift's 1989 (a.k.a not Kendrick)
Record of the Year: Bruno Mars & Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk" (a.k.a TRINIDAD JAMES WON A GRAMMY FOR RECORD OF THE YEAR. Everything's okay.) UPDATE: turns out he doesn't get a direct win for Record of the Year -- it goes to performers. Still, he had an influence, and that's amazing. Who knows, maybe he does get a trophy.

Go Kendrick!

Urban contemporary? Was Weeknd's album not considered R&B?

the grammy's have always been irrelevant at judging hip hop but it's better him than any other rapper, at least it makes sense.

the grammy's are doing heavy damage control though. they're trying to make up for the outrage sparked by Macklemore's wins two years ago. They're also trying to avoid a "racial" controversy and debate ala Oscar. I'm pretty sure if Macklemore's wins hadn't led to such drama, the nominations and wins this year would have been different. Can't say that it's for the worst.

Anyone know what song he performed second? Ever since I saw him and quik together I keep speculating as to when we will hear some snippets or maybe a live version and every beat he raps on now is so quik it's crazy

I think Josef Leimberg (from Da Soundscannerz) were somehow involved with or played instruments on those songs?

Quaze posted a video about it on FB.

I swear on everything I love you must be a Virgin man....Kendrick is the greatest since pac I agree that's why the collaboration is so appealing a multi generational effort wouldn't just band the young people together but the old heads too...besides if pac was alive you wouldn't like him cuz he's too old?? Get out here bro

I have to agree. Even giving Taylor Swift the album of the year got Twitter mad last night. But it would have been worse had Kendrick not won 5 already. The Grammys also let him do Blacker the Berry on live TV, something I thought I'd never see, then finish off with Untitled 3. I'm glad he won 5 Grammys, last hip-hop artist to do that in one show was Lauryn Hill and that's because half her album was R&B. If there was ever an artist to do it, I'm glad it's Kendrick as there's a sense he deserved it.

I'm pretty sure he did a verse from "Blacker The Berry", then a verse from "Alright" & then freestyled some new shit.

Coulda just been too wavy though lol.
