How the fuck did this become a Warren G vs Coolio thread? Two VERY different artists, both with classic debut albums.   That's where the comparison ends though.   Coolio was a better rapper but Warren had the flow and the production.   Coolio had more hits but only one complete album (It Takes a Thief) while the G Child dropped some underrated gems after Regulate.

well said

would you put Coolio's debut right there with Warren's or lets say Dogg Food though?

Im asking because I have never listened to it

hey The Sign was an earworm ;D

That's a great fuckin song!!  I have very vivid and happy memories of bus rides home from 6th grade and that song coming on and kids singing along to it.

"Don't Turn Around" is another great jam, banger!

...then "It's a Beautiful Life" is a solid joint as well

^^ And you just compared them..

I'm not sure Coolio is that much better of a rapper.  People diss Warren as a rapper, but I don't see why.  I mean on what basis?  He had his own distinct style and lyrics and to me that's more important than anything else.  He usually kicked laid back and reflective verses with a bit of gangsta and G Funk signature

to me that's better than Coolio overall

and not to say I don't like Coolio.  He was dope on Maad Circle joints back in the day and the guy clearly had the charisma to be a star.  He had 4 great tracks I was a big fan of...

"I Remember"
"Gangstaz Paradise"
"C U When you Get There"
"Fantastic Voyage"
"Mama I'm in Love With a Gangsta"

..that joint he had on Ras Kass Soul On Ice album was dope too... "You know it's drama, but it sounds real good"

warren g rhyme structure and flow was all real simple

some AA-BB cat in the hat type shit

that said, his music was production driven and that simplicity complimented it well

coolio is a better emcee, but warren made better music

and i was fuckin around earlier... there's no issue with soopafly being a huge coolio fan. coolio was indeed dope and underrated by the heads because of his commercial crossover.

I disagree with the premise that rhyme structure and flow is the ultimate criteria for judging an emcee.  For me it's their unique style.  Like coming up with new styles and how well you flip that style.

Like the most basic example is you might have a fast rapper and people are impressed with how fast he can rap, but Slick Rick and Snoop proved how you can slow it down and not rush the flow and it can be better in that way.  Snoop discusses this at length in his autobiography, like an unhassled, unrushed approach to rhyming and also to life.

slick ricks emcee skills were in his unique delivery and story telling

snoop is much of the same

warrens style is basically a lightweight snoop, not that unique or different from the rest

fun fact- snoop got much of his style from rbx

"You got more class than the average type hooker bitch, don't switch". My favorite line from that song, and probably the whole album.

Don't let Sccit see all the Coolio love in this thread. He's already wrecked in disbelief that I'm a fan. If he finds more fans, he might completely lose it jk.

Yeah that whole verse is fire 🔥 more than the lyrics it's the heart and energy behind it — and the girl on the track really plays her two verses well too...  it might be the best ever male female duet type of track in rap history off the top of my head
