Somethin interesting about this site...
« on: November 29, 2003, 04:18:46 PM »
Lately, I've noticed that the members on this site are from many different places, and come from different cultural backgrounds. But the thing that is most interesting to me is that most people on this site are not african american, and most don't live in L.A. or in California. I am black and from L.A., and I never would have imagined that people from these different places and countries would have the same taste in music that I do. I know that I like west coast music best, mainly because thas what I grew up listenin to. But I am in Florida now, and I'd say the people on this site are waaaaay more knowledgable about west coast music than most of the blacks are here in Florida. Even more interesting is that people on here are more knowledgable than most people in L.A. that I know.

So I'm wonderin, what makes you like west coast music the best, seeing that most of you all are from different environments from me? Most people I grew up with and live by me like it because thas what we grew up with, and most of us know a lot of west coast rappers, some famous some not. But with you all it's different. I think it's tite as hell that people outside of CA and America have the same preferences as me, so I jus wanted to kno how you got into it like this. And is the west ya favorite coast as far as music, or do you jus use this site to talk about west coast rap even tho u like east coast or down south rap better?

yeah i feel that.. lemme see..

my preference is west coast stuff yeah.. but i listen to all 'coasts' and all kinds of music. personally i'm lucky to be able to spend 100% of my working day listening to music, so i can get through a lot, plus i can use the board at work.. why do i listen to it? i dunno.. the first rap music i listened to was electro breakdance stuff.. like amityville when i was about 8 or so coz a mate at primary school had got the tapes from his big bro. we would hire movies like "electric boogaloo" and try to copy the breaking.. lol ... much later the stuff i listened to properly was Ice-Ts OG and stuff like eazy duz it and all the other NWA stuff.. and like i said the other day doggystyle.. and before his murder case the buzz was "wow snoop turns into a dog in his video".. so that came out when i was about 16.. and it was the first album i bought on CD when i made that transition... but why west coast stuff tho? just because i feel it more.. thats it. i dunno.. how did i end up here? i dunno... and i know i've been dissed for it.. but i think its better its run by me ;). because i cant possibly be eliteist about the race thing and about the location thing, and i think this is why other things have failed.. because this is for fans from everywhere to chop and share game :)

I found that odd too. I'm blacc myself, and livin' the Cali life down in Dago, and after spending a year at Siccness.net before comin' here I was pretty shocked. I think it's a great thing though that all types of cultures/races are into West Coast rap.

I laugh sometimes when I'm here. There's a lot of people with names that contain L.B.C. and/or 213, when they ain't even from the U.S. I don't know why, but that shit is hilarious to me. Some peeps here are obsessed with L.A., too. I remember some cat said his dream was to cruise through Watts or something. LMAO.

I am so into the West Coast rap scene because thats what I listened to growing up and thats what i listen to now. Originally I'm from San Diego and i have lived there all my life up until when i graduated and then i am here in Nebraska. (don't ask why because i don't even know) But it seems that i'm the only dude in Nebraska that listens to west coast rap. I myself am mexican but its cool to see everyone enjoying CALI rap.

I've always been interested in the city L.A, so I also started listening to it's music.

I live in Glendale, CA, right next to LA. And i've been exposed to Westcoast music through my friend Haik. 2pac got me into rap, and i never looked back. Actually, i don't really "prefer" westcoast over any other coast, but it makes me mad that the west is so under-appreciated

I'm from Baltimore and i've liked Eazy, Ice T and Cube.

Hell, I found this site looking for any information on Eazy's lost tracks.

It's basically that westcoastrap sounds funkier then rap from elsewhere. Those beats are more elemental in sound, without much additions wich I just don't like as much.

My big brother and a friend of his listened to rap a lot when I was a kid, my bro's friend especially. He was into all kinds of stuff, but mostly he listened to Dre, Snoop - Death Row stuff, basically. That's how I got exposed to it. I never liked Finnish music, and most of it still sucks. Anyways, I really enjoyed them west coast tunes from the beginning. It was always special when the Nuthin' But a G-Thang or What's My Name? or one of them videos came on MTV. As I grew I constantly broadened my horizon of music, but the Best still comes from the West.

I guess I understand how you feel weird how a guy like me or other people on this board like the west coast stuff so much. I mean I too would think it was weird if you Cali guys started liking Finnish rap, which is very much a local thing.

How I got into West Coast hip-hop?

This was basically because of Pac. I saw him repping the West all the time and collaborating with artists from the West (Dru Down, Spice 1,...) so I got interested in the West Coast because of that.

I started buying a few West Coast albums, and what I liked most about the music was the funk-elements. I love the keyboards, the "handclap-drums",...that bascially does it for me. Of course, I can't relate to the gangsta-lyrics, not at all, but I love the music. That's what it's all about.

Also, I listen to some East Coast artists, but most of the time, I'm bumping West Coast music.

Good topic btw  ;)

Same with me. I started listening to rap because of Pac in '95 when "AEOM" dropped. At first I was into all kinds, until about my junior year in high school I started listening to strictly West Coast rap. That's how it is pretty much right now.

Agreed. Sounds a bit too simple, but that's the bottom line. Music is music - if it moves you it moves you, doesn't matter where you are when you hear it.

I grew up in a little coastal town right down at the bottom of the UK... unless you surf or whatnot there's not a huge amount to do except enjoy the scenery and sit in a pub by the river watching the world go by...

In that kind of environment, especially during the summer, West Coast hip-hop just sounds better. I don't know if Seer or any other Uk heads on the board who are from that way feel the same, but when I was 14 or so, Regulate just acted as a better soundtrack to my days than 36 Chambers...
